How to Transfer a Facebook Page to Another Account

Handing over the keys to a Facebook Page you’ve spent months or years building can feel like a big deal, but the process itself is surprisingly straightforward when you know where to look. Whether you’re selling a business, handing off responsibilities to a team member, or simply moving management to a different personal account, the steps are well within your reach. This guide will walk you through everything, showing you how to add a simple admin or complete a full ownership transfer using Meta’s official tools.

First, Which Kind of Transfer Do You Need?

Before you click a single button, it's important to understand the two main ways to "transfer" a Page. They serve very different purposes, and picking the wrong one can lead to headaches down the road. This isn't just about wording, it's about control, ownership, and security.

  • Assigning a New Admin (Simple Handoff): This is the most common method. You grant someone else the highest level of permissions (Admin) on the Page. They can post, manage comments, run ads, and see insights - everything you can do. However, you remain an admin as well. This is perfect for bringing on a new social media manager or partner while you retain co-control. Critically, this does not transfer legal or ultimate ownership in Facebook’s system.
  • Transferring Ownership via Meta Business Suite (Definitive Transfer): This is the official, binding way to transfer a Page as a business asset. The Page is moved into the new owner’s Meta Business Account, giving them full and ultimate control. They can then remove you from the Page entirely. This is the only method you should use if you are selling a business, leaving a company, or need to wash your hands completely of the Page with no lingering access.

For most day-to-day scenarios, a simple admin change is enough. For any formal transfer of assets, Meta Business Suite is the right and only path.

Prerequisites for a Successful Page Transfer

To avoid frustrating roadblocks, make sure you have these things squared away before you begin. It'll save you a lot of time and potential back-and-forth.

  • You Must Be a Full Admin: Only an existing Admin of the Page can assign other people Admin roles or initiate a business transfer. If you're an "Editor" or "Moderator," you won't even see the necessary settings.
  • The New Owner Needs a Facebook Account: This seems obvious, but the person you're transferring the Page to must have their own personal Facebook profile in good standing.
  • (Optional but Recommended) Become Facebook Friends: Being friends with the person you’re adding as an Admin makes them much easier to find and tag in the Page Roles settings. It’s not strictly required if you know their email address, but it simplifies the process.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): For any transaction involving business assets, both you and the new owner should have 2FA enabled on your personal Facebook accounts. This is a non-negotiable best practice for security and helps prevent the account from being locked during or after the transfer.

Method 1: How to Add an Admin to a Facebook Page (The Simple Way)

If you're just adding a team member or a partner to help manage the Page, this is the quickest way to get it done. The new admin will have nearly all the same permissions as you, including the ability to add or remove other roles (except you, unless you choose to leave).

Follow these steps from a desktop browser, which provides the clearest interface.

Step 1: Navigate to Your Page Settings

First, open Facebook and go to the Page you want to transfer. On the left-hand menu, click on "Settings." From there, select "New Pages Experience." This opens up the new control panel for Pages.

Step 2: Access "Page Access"

Within the Page management settings, look for the "Page Access" option in the left menu. Click it. This is where you manage everyone who has permission to work on your Page.

Step 3: Add the New Person

You'll see a section called "People with Facebook access." Click the "Add New" button. A prompt will appear explaining what giving someone access means. Click "Next."

Step 4: Search for and Select the New Admin

In the search bar, type the name or email address of the person you want to add. If you are friends with them on Facebook, their profile should appear almost immediately. Select their profile.

Step 5: Grant Full Control

This is the most important step in the process. Facebook will ask what level of access you want to grant. To make them a full Admin, you must toggle the switch for "Allow this person to have full control." This grants them permission to manage everything, including deleting the page. Read this carefully, then click "Give Access."

Step 6: Confirm with Your Password

For security, Facebook will ask you to re-enter your personal Facebook password to confirm the change. Enter it and click "Confirm."

Step 7: The New Admin Must Accept the Invitation

The job isn't done yet! The person you invited will receive a notification to become an Admin of your Page. They have 30 days to accept this invitation before it expires. Once they accept, they will immediately have full admin access.

(Optional) Step 8: Removing Yourself as an Admin

If the goal of the transfer was to hand off the Page completely, you can now remove yourself. Once the new admin has accepted their role, you can go back to the "Page Access" screen. Click the three dots next to your own name and select "Remove from Page." Once you confirm, you will lose all access. This action is permanent and cannot be undone unless the new owner adds you back.

Method 2: Full Ownership Transfer via Meta Business Suite

If you have sold your business or are legally transferring ownership of the Page asset, this is the only correct method. It formally relocates the Page from your Business Account to theirs. This method is slightly more involved but ensures a clean and complete break.

First Things First: You Need a Meta Business Account

Your Facebook Page needs to be connected to a Meta Business Account (formerly Facebook Business Manager) to be transferred this way. If you haven't set one up yet, go to business.facebook.com/overview and create one. Claim your Page into that Business Account to get started.

Step 1: Navigate to Business Settings

Go to business.facebook.com and select the Business Account that owns the Page you wish to transfer. Click the gear icon on the bottom left to open "Business Settings."

Step 2: Add the New Owner to Your Business Account

Under the "Users" dropdown, click on "People." Then, click the blue "Add people" button. Enter the email address of the person who will be taking ownership. It’s crucial that you use the email address associated with their personal Facebook profile.

Step 3: Assign "Full Control" at the Business Level

When you invite them, you will be prompted to assign business access. For a full ownership transfer, you need to turn on the toggle for "Full control." This gives them permission to manage everything inside your Business Account, including who else has access. Click "Next."

Step 4: Assign Them to the Facebook Page Asset

On the next screen, you’ll assign them access to specific assets. In the first column ("Select asset type"), choose "Pages (New Pages Experience)." A list of your pages will appear in the middle column. Select the Page you want to transfer. In the final column on the right, toggle on "Full control" permission for that specific page.

Step 5: Send the Invitation

Click "Invite." The new owner will receive an email invitation to join your Business Account. Just like with the simple admin method, they must accept this invitation to proceed.

Step 6: The New Owner Removes You

Once the new owner has accepted the invitation and has full admin access to the Business Account, they are the one who should remove you. This finalizes the transfer of control. They will navigate to Business Settings >, People, find your name in the list, and click "Remove."

This method ensures the Page asset is now fully housed under their business entity, providing a clear chain of custody.

Troubleshooting Common Transfer Issues

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned. Here are a few common hiccups and how to fix them:

  • "I can't find the person I want to add." This usually happens if you're not friends on Facebook and you’re mistyping their name or email. Double-check the email address tied to their profile, or just send a friend request to make it easier.
  • "The 'Add New' button is greyed out or missing." This means you aren't a full Admin of the page. You'll need to ask an existing Admin to make the change or to elevate your own permissions first.
  • "The invitation expired." Invitations are only valid for 30 days. If the recipient misses the window, you’ll just have to cancel the pending invitation in your Page Access settings and send a new one.
  • "The page is connected to an Instagram account or Ad Account." When performing a full Business Suite transfer, you may also need to transfer ownership of the connected Ad Account and give them access to the associated Instagram profile. All these assets can be managed from the same Business Settings dashboard.

Patience and clear communication with the person on the other end of the transfer can solve most issues pretty quickly.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to properly hand off a Facebook Page is an essential skill for any marketer, business owner, or social media manager. Whether you choose the quick "Add Admin" method for bringing on a teammate or the formal "Meta Business Suite" transfer for selling an asset, understanding the difference is what protects you and ensures a smooth transition.

Of course, after the transfer is done, managing the Page's actual content becomes the real work. The first thing a new owner needs is clarity on what's been posted and what’s scheduled next. That's why we built Postbase. We wanted a simple, visual calendar to see our entire content strategy at a glance, and a reliable scheduler that could handle all the modern content formats - especially short-form video for Reels and TikTok - without the clunky interfaces of older tools. Taking over a page is much less stressful when you can see the whole picture in one clean dashboard.
