How to Remove Yourself as Admin on a Facebook Page

Ready to hand over the keys to a Facebook Page? Maybe you’re starting a new role, wrapping up a project for a client, or simply reorganizing your digital world. Whatever your reason, removing yourself as an admin from a Page you no longer manage is a clean and straightforward process. This guide will walk you through the exact steps for both desktop and mobile, cover what to do if you’re the last admin standing, and help you troubleshoot any snags along the way.

Before You Click "Remove": Key Things to Understand

Removing yourself as a Page admin seems simple - and it is - but a few important details are worth noting before you make the change permanent. Taking a moment to understand them can save you from a major headache later on.

1. This Change is Permanent (Almost)

Once you remove your own access, it’s gone for good. You can’t undo the action. To regain access, a current admin on the page will have to re-invite you. If you were the only admin and you’ve handed the reins over to someone new, make sure you trust them to manage things properly. If you think there’s even a small chance you might need to jump back in, consider asking the new admin to keep you on with a lower-level role, like an Editor or Moderator, instead of removing you entirely.

2. A Page Can't Be Orphaned

Facebook requires every Page to have at least one person with full admin control. If you are the sole admin, Facebook will not let you remove yourself. This is a failsafe to prevent Pages from becoming abandoned digital properties with no one in charge. Before you can step down, you must transfer ownership by adding a new person and giving them full admin privileges. We'll cover exactly how to do that a little further down.

3. Your Past Contributions Will Remain

Worried that all the content you’ve posted or scheduled will vanish once you leave? Don't be. Everything you created, published, or scheduled on behalf of the Page stays with the Page. That includes historical posts, comments you've made, and any content queued up in the publishing tools. Your personal profile is separate from the Page’s identity, so your departure doesn't disrupt its content history or future schedule.

4. Check Your Access Path

Most people manage a Page directly through Facebook. However, if your access was granted through Meta Business Suite (formerly Business Manager), the removal process might need to happen there. For the vast majority of users, the steps below will work perfectly. But if you try them and find your profile is greyed out or un-removable, it’s a sign that your permissions are controlled by a Business Suite account. In that case, the Business Suite admin will need to remove you from the Page within their business settings.

The Easiest Method: How to Remove Yourself Using a Desktop Browser

Using a desktop or laptop computer is arguably the quickest and most straightforward way to manage your Page roles. The larger screen makes navigating the settings menus much clearer. Here's how to get it done.

  • Step 1: Switch to Your Page Profile
Log into Facebook and go to the Page you want to leave. In the top-right corner of your screen, click on your profile picture. From the dropdown menu, select "See all profiles" and choose the Page you want to switch to. Your browser will reload, and you will now be interacting with Facebook as your Page.
  • Step 2: Access the Page’s Dashboard
Once you're browsing as your Page, click the "Manage" button on the left sidebar, located near the top of the Page's main view. This will take you to your Page’s Professional Dashboard.
  • Step 3: Go to "Page Access"
In the Professional Dashboard, look at the menu on the left side. Scroll down until you find the "Your Tools" section and click on "Page Access". This is where you can view a list of everyone who has an administrative role or task-based access to the Page.
  • Step 4: Find Yourself and Initiate Removal
In the "People with Facebook access" section, you’ll see yourself and any other admins listed. Find your name in the list. To the far right of your name, you'll see a three-dot icon (…). Click on this icon to open a small menu.
  • Step 5: Select "Remove Access"
From the menu that appears, click on "Remove Access". A confirmation window will pop up to make sure you didn’t click this by accident.
  • Step 6: Confirm with Your Password
For security purposes, Facebook will ask you to re-enter your personal profile's password. This confirms that it's actually you making this significant change. Type in your password and click "Confirm."

And that’s it! The page will refresh, your name will be gone from the list, and you’ll no longer have administrative access to the Page.

On the Go: How to Remove Yourself Using the Facebook Mobile App

If you're managing things from your phone, the process is just as simple, though the menus look a bit different. These steps work for both the iOS and Android Facebook apps.

  • Step 1: Open the App and Switch to Your Page
Open the Facebook app. Tap on your profile picture with the hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom-right corner (iOS) or top-right corner (Android). This will open your main menu. At the top of the menu, you'll see your current profile - tap on it (or the downward arrow next to it) to bring up a list of your other profiles and Pages. Select the Page you want to leave.
  • Step 2: Navigate to Settings
Once your profile has switched to the Page, go back to the Main Menu by tapping the profile picture icon again. Scroll down and tap on "Settings &, Privacy," and then tap on "Settings" from the smaller menu that appears.
  • Step 3: Access Page Settings
In the Settings menu, you'll see the name of your Page at the top. Tap on "Page Settings."
  • Step 4: Find "Page Access"
Scroll down through the long list of Page settings until you find the "New Pages Experience" section. Within this section, tap on "Page Access."
  • Step 5: Locate Your Profile and Remove
You'll see a list of "People with Facebook access." Find your name and tap the three-dot icon (...) next to it.
  • Step 6: Confirm Your Removal
A menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen. Tap "Remove Access." You'll then be asked to enter your Facebook password to finalize the change. Enter it and tap "Confirm."

You have now successfully removed yourself as an admin using your mobile device.

What If You're the ONLY Admin? The Proper Handover Process

As mentioned, you cannot remove yourself if you're the sole admin. It's a dead-end until you assign someone else to take over. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.

1. Add and Invite a New Admin

First, you need to grant someone new full admin access. This person must have a Facebook profile.

  • Navigate to the "Page Access" screen using either the desktop or mobile instructions above.
  • Click or tap the "Add New" button.
  • You'll get a prompt explaining what admin access means, click "Next."
  • Search for the person by their name or email address and select their profile from the results.
  • On the next screen, you’ll be asked to set their permissions. Toggle the switch for "Allow this person to have full control." This grants them full admin abilities, including the power to add and remove others. Cautiously review the implications here.
  • Click "Give Access," enter your password to confirm, and the invitation will be sent.

2. Wait for Them to Accept the Invitation

The job isn't done yet. The person you invited will receive a notification and has to accept the admin role. You cannot remove yourself until their status changes from "Pending" to "Active." You might want to send them a quick message to let them know the invitation is waiting in their Facebook notifications.

3. Once Confirmed, Remove Yourself

As soon as their admin status is active, the Page officially has two admins. Now, you’re free to follow the steps in either the desktop or mobile tutorials above to remove your own access. The process is exactly the same.

Final Thoughts

Successfully stepping down from a Facebook Page admin role is all about following the right steps in the right order. Whether you use a computer or a mobile phone, the key is to navigate to your Page's settings, find the "Page Access" area, and securely confirm your decision to leave. Just remember to appoint a successor if you're the last admin captaining the ship.
