Creating a Facebook Page for your business, brand, or community is one of the most effective first steps you can take to build an online presence. It gives you a direct line to your audience and unlocks powerful tools for growth. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire process of setting up a professional, optimized Facebook Page from scratch.
Setting up your Page will be much smoother if you have a few key assets ready to go. A little prep work here makes a massive difference in how professional your Page looks from the moment it goes live.
This should be your official business or brand name. It’s what people will search for, so keep it clear, simple, and recognizable. If your exact business name is taken, you can add a location (e.g., "Main Street Cafe - Seattle") or a simple descriptor (e.g., "Juniper Creative Co.").
You can choose up to three categories that best describe what your page is about. Be specific. Instead of "Business," choose "Marketing Agency," "Hair Salon," or "Local Service." This helps Facebook show your Page to the right audience.
This is your elevator pitch. You have 255 characters to explain what you do, who you serve, and why someone should care. Write something clear and compelling that captures your brand's voice. We’ll add this during the setup process.
For most businesses, this should be your logo. It appears as a small circle next to all your posts and comments, so it needs to be instantly recognizable. The ideal size is at least 176 x 176 pixels. Keep your main logo element well within the circular crop area.
This is the large, panoramic image at the top of your Page and a prime piece of digital real estate. Use a high-quality photo that showcases your product, your team, your physical location, or a current campaign. The ideal dimensions are 851 x 315 pixels. Avoid text or important elements near the edges as it may get cropped on mobile devices.
With your assets ready, it's time to build your Page. Facebook occasionally updates its interface, but these core steps remain consistent.
First, make sure you are logged into your personal Facebook profile. Your personal profile acts as the administrator for the new Page you’re creating, it will not be publicly visible or linked on your business Page.
On the Facebook homepage, look for the 'Menu' icon (it looks like a grid of nine dots) in the top-right corner. Click it, and under the "Create" section, select "Page."
You'll now see a page creation screen with a preview on the right. This is where you'll use the information from your pre-launch checklist.
As you fill this out, you'll see the preview on the right update in real-time. When you're happy with it, click the "Create Page" button at the bottom.
Once your Page is created, Facebook will prompt you to add the visual elements that bring your brand to life. This is where you’ll upload the logo and cover image you prepared earlier.
You can drag the cover photo to reposition it perfectly before you save. Once everything looks good, click "Save."
Next, Facebook will ask if you want to connect your business's WhatsApp account to your Page. This is a very useful feature if you use WhatsApp for customer communication. It allows you to add a WhatsApp button to your Page and run "Click-to-WhatsApp" ads. If you don't use it, you can simply skip this step by closing the pop-up window.
Your newly created Page has zero followers, and Facebook prompts you to get the ball rolling by inviting friends from your personal profile. Be strategic here. Don’t just mass-invite everyone. Instead, invite friends, family, and colleagues who you know are genuinely interested in your venture and would be happy to support you. An initial group of engaged followers tells the Facebook algorithm that your Page is worth showing to more people.
Facebook will ask if you want to receive Page notifications on your personal profile and marketing emails. It's wise to keep the Page notifications turned on, so you never miss a comment or message from a potential customer. You can decide on the marketing emails based on your own preference.
Congratulations! Your Facebook business Page is now live and officially exists on the platform. But we're not quite done. The difference between a good Page and a great Page is in the details.
Just creating the Page isn't enough. You need to fill out all the available sections to make it look professional, trustworthy, and easy for customers to find and interact with. Facebook provides a handy Page completion checklist to guide you.
This is one of the most important steps. Navigate to your Page’s “About” tab and fill out everything you can. This information often appears in search results on and off Facebook.
When you first create a Page, it has a long, clunky URL with a string of numbers. You need to set a custom "username" to get a clean, memorable URL like facebook.com/YourBusinessName. To do this:
At the top of your Page, there's a prominent call-to-action (CTA) button. By default, it might say "Send Message." You can customize this to direct visitors toward your most important goal.
Click the button to edit it and choose from a variety of options, such as:
Link the button to the relevant destination, whether it's your website’s contact page, your online store, a booking calendar, or a YouTube video.
Your Page is blank until you post something. Your very first post should be a warm "welcome" post. Announce that you're now on Facebook, briefly explain what your brand is all about, and let people know what kind of content they can expect to see from you.
A good welcome post might include:
Once you’ve published your welcome post (or another important announcement), you can "pin" it to the top of your Page's feed. This means it will be the first post anyone sees when they visit your Page. It’s perfect for highlighting a current promotion, an introduction video, or a message you want every new visitor to see.
To do this, click the three dots in the top-right corner of the post and select "Pin to top of page."
