How to Change Your Username on a Facebook Page on Mobile

Changing your Facebook Page's username directly from your phone should be a simple task, but the settings can often feel buried within an ever-changing app interface. This guide will walk you through a clear, step-by-step process to update your username using a mobile device, whether you're rebranding or just getting your Page set up. We'll also cover Facebook's rules, what to do when things don't go smoothly, and how to choose the perfect new handle for your brand.

What Exactly is a Facebook Page Username?

Before we jump into the steps, let's quickly clarify what we're changing. A Facebook Page username is not the same as your Page's name. They serve two different, but equally important, purposes for your brand.

  • Your Page Name: This is the main title of your Page, like "Jen's Bake Shop." It appears right under your profile picture and is your primary identifier.
  • Your Page Username: This is your unique @ handle, like "@JensBakeShop." It creates a custom, clean URL for your page (e.g., facebook.com/JensBakeShop) and allows people to tag you directly in posts and comments.

Think of the Page Name as your business's official title and the Username as its unique web address and hashtag. A great username is crucial for a few reasons:

  • Brand Consistency: If your handle on Instagram, X, and TikTok is "@JensBakeShop," your Facebook Page should match. This consistency makes it easy for your audience to find you everywhere.
  • Discoverability: A simple, relevant username makes it much easier for people to find your Page through Facebook's search.
  • Marketing Ease: It's much cleaner to put facebook.com/JensBakeShop on a business card, email signature, or podcast description than a generic URL with a long string of numbers at the end.

Your Pre-Change Checklist: What to Know Before You Start

Getting locked out or running into an error when trying to change your username can be frustrating. To avoid any roadblocks, run through this quick checklist first. Meeting these criteria will make the process much smoother.

1. Are You an Admin?

This is the most common hurdle. To change a Page's username, you must have an "Admin" role. Other roles like Editor, Moderator, Analyst, or Advertiser do not have sufficient permissions to make this change. If you manage a client's page or are part of a team, double-check your role first. If you're not an Admin, you'll need to request access from someone who is.

To check your role: Go to your Page >, Manage >, Page Access. Here you can see who has Facebook access and what their role is.

2. Understand Facebook's Username Rules

Facebook has a few specific rules for usernames to keep them unique and safe. Your desired username must adhere to the following:

  • It has not been claimed by anyone else's page or profile.
  • It must contain at least five characters (and we suggest no more than 50).
  • It can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) and periods ("."). Periods don't differentiate usernames, for instance, johnsmith55, john.smith55, and john.smith.55 are all considered the same.
  • It can't include generic terms (like "@pizza") or extensions like .com or .net.
  • It must follow Facebook's Terms of Service, which means it cannot be impersonating another person or brand, be deceptive, or contain hateful language.

If the username you want is already taken, you may need to get creative by adding a qualifier like "HQ" (e.g., "@JensBakeShopHQ") or your city (e.g., "@JensBakeShopNYC").

3. Be Prepared for the Waiting Game

Once you've successfully changed your username, you might not be able to change it again for a period of time. After the change, Facebook may create a redirect from your old URL to your new one to avoid broken links, but don't count on this lasting forever. It's best to choose thoughtfully and be ready to stick with your new selection for a good while.

How to Change Your Facebook Page Username on Mobile

Managing Pages on mobile can be notoriously difficult because Facebook often updates its user interface, pushing key settings into different menus or even moving them entirely to the Meta Business Suite app. Below are the most reliable methods that work today.

Method 1: Change Your Username via Mobile Browser (The Failsafe Workaround)

Frankly, this is the most reliable method and overcomes the limitations of the mobile app. By requesting the desktop version of Facebook in your phone's browser, you get access to the full suite of settings, just like you would on your computer.

  1. Open Your Browser: Launch Chrome, Safari, or your preferred mobile browser. Do not use the Facebook app for this method.
  2. Navigate to Facebook: Go to web.facebook.com. If you land on the mobile m.facebook.com version, you'll need to force the desktop site.
  3. Request Desktop Site:
    • In Safari (iOS): Tap the "aA" icon in the address bar and select "Request Desktop Website."
    • In Chrome (Android/iOS): Tap the three dots in the corner of your browser window and select "Desktop site."
You'll now see the desktop layout of Facebook, which might be a bit small on your phone screen, but it's fully functional. Pinch and zoom as needed.
  4. Switch to Your Page: Click your profile picture in the top-right corner. In the dropdown, select "See all profiles" and choose the Page you want to manage.
  5. Go to Settings: Once you're managing your Page, click your Page's profile picture in the top-right corner again. From the dropdown, select Settings & Privacy >, Settings.
  6. Change Your Username: This will bring you to the "General Page Settings" screen. Your username is right there. Click Edit next to "Username."
  7. Enter and Save: Type in your desired new username. Facebook will check its availability in real-time. If it's available, you'll see a green checkmark. Click Save Changes, and you're done!

Method 2: Attempting the Change Within the Facebook App (New Pages Experience)

If you'd like to try it through the app first, the path is simpler, but as mentioned, this functionality has been known to disappear for some users. This method requires using Facebook's "New Pages Experience."

  1. Open the App and Switch Profiles: Tap the menu icon (your profile picture and three lines) in the bottom-right corner. Tap the dropdown arrow next to your name and select the Page you wish to manage.
  2. Access the Settings Menu: Once you're in your Page's profile, tap the menu icon (now your Page's profile picture) again.
  3. Navigate to Page Settings: Scroll down and tap on Settings & Privacy, and then tap Settings.
  4. Find the Username Setting: Tap on Page Settings at the very top. In the next menu, under "Personal Information," you should see a "Name" field listed first. This takes you to where you can update your page name and username. Some versions show a separate "Username" field on this page, while others have it hidden. Tap "Edit" next to Username. On other versions, you must tap Edit next to the page link itself (e.g., "facebook.com/myoldname").
  5. Enter and Save Your New Username: Type your new username into the field and tap Save. If the name is available, the change will be confirmed. If the relevant settings are not available in this menu on your device, we highly recommend switching to the browser method above.

Fixing Common Problems: When It Just Won't Work

Ran into an error? Don't worry. Here are some of the most common issues users face and how to fix them.

Problem: "This username isn't available."

The Fix: The most straightforward problem. Someone else has it. Try a variation by adding a small modifier like your city, "official," or an underscore if the aesthetic fits your brand. You could also try abbreviations.

Problem: "This Page isn't eligible to have a username."

The Fix: This message usually appears for brand-new pages. While Facebook doesn't publicize an official minimum number of followers anymore, a page with zero followers might be flagged as ineligible. The solution is here. Spend a little time building your Page first. Invite some friends to like it, post some content, and get a bit of engagement. Try again after a few days or weeks.

Problem: The username is rejected but doesn't seem to be taken.

The Fix: You may be unintentionally violating one of Facebook's guidelines. Re-read your username choice critically. Is it using a generic extension like ".org"? Does it just consist of a capital letter one after another (i.e., looks like a spam account)? Could it be deemed deceptive? Try a simpler, cleaner variation that clearly relates to your Page name.

Problem: The option to edit the username is missing entirely.

The Fix: This is a classic Facebook-interface issue. It either means you are not an Admin, or the setting has temporarily moved on mobile. Your best bet is to default to Method 1: Using the Mobile Browser. It is the bulletproof solution to finding the setting no matter what changes are made to the app.

Changing your Facebook Page's username brings your branding one step closer to perfect consistency across all social channels.
