How to Write an Instagram URL

Knowing your Instagram URL seems simple enough, but when you're asked for it on the spot, you might draw a blank on the exact format. This guide covers everything you need to know: we'll show you the correct structure, how to find your URL on any device, and where to strategically share it to effectively grow your following and brand.

What Is an Instagram URL, Anyway?

An Instagram URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the unique web address that leads directly to your Instagram profile. Think of it as the digital street address for your account. Sharing it is the most reliable way to direct people to your profile from outside the Instagram app.

The Basic Formula

Every Instagram profile URL follows the same simple and clean structure:

https://www.instagram.com/yourusername/

It's that straightforward. The only part that changes is the yourusername segment, which you'll replace with your actual Instagram handle. If your username is @brandgrowthtips, your URL would be:

https://www.instagram.com/brandgrowthtips/

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When writing your URL manually, it's easy to make a small mistake that will result in a broken link. Here are the most common errors to keep in mind:

  • Don't include the "@" symbol. The "@" is used within the app to tag users, but it has no place in a web URL.
  • Check your spelling. A simple typo like "instragram" or "intagram" will lead people to a page that doesn't exist.
  • Never use spaces. Usernames on Instagram can't contain spaces, and neither can the URL that directs to them. Usernames often use periods (.), underscores (_), or numbers to separate words.
  • Avoid unnecessary tracking parameters. Sometimes when you copy a link, you'll see extra text starting with a question mark (like ?igshid=...). This is a tracking identifier. While the link will still work, you can safely delete everything from the ? onward for a cleaner, permanent URL.

How to Find Your Instagram URL

If you don't want to type your URL out manually, or if you need to find someone else's, here are the easiest ways to copy the exact link directly from Instagram on any device.

From a Computer or Mobile Web Browser

This is by far the fastest and most foolproof method to get your proper URL. The address bar doesn't lie.

  1. Open your preferred web browser, like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
  2. Navigate to instagram.com and log into your account if prompted.
  3. Click on your profile picture in the navigation menu (usually in the upper-right corner for desktops) to go to your profile page.
  4. Look at the address bar at the very top of your browser window. The full URL displayed there is your Instagram URL.
  5. Click inside the address bar, select the entire address, and copy it. It's ready to be pasted wherever you need it.

From the Instagram Mobile App

The mobile app doesn't display your URL in an obvious place, but it offers a quick sharing feature that copies it for you. This is perfect when you're on the go.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your smartphone and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to go to your profile.
  2. Below your bio, you'll see buttons like "Edit profile." Tap the "Share profile" button.
  3. A menu will pop up from the bottom of the screen. Simply tap on "Copy link."
  4. Your unique profile URL is now copied to your device's clipboard. You can paste it into an email, text message, or any other app.

This method grabs the clean, core URL without any special tracking codes, making it perfect for sharing.

Finding Another Person's Instagram URL

Need to grab the profile link for a client, competitor, or a creator you admire? The process is just as easy.

  • On a Web Browser: Navigate to their profile and copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar.
  • On the Mobile App: Go to their profile page, tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the screen, and then select "Copy profile URL" from the menu that appears.

How to Get a Direct Link to a Specific Instagram Post, Reel, or Story

Sometimes you don't want to send someone to your entire profile, you want them to see a specific piece of your work. Getting a direct link to a post, Reel, or even a live Story is an essential skill for promoting specific content.

Linking to a Specific Post or Reel

This is incredibly useful for directing traffic to a new product announcement, a contest entry, or a behind-the-scenes video you're referencing in a blog post or newsletter.

From a Web Browser:

  1. Navigate to the specific post or Reel you want to share.
  2. The URL in your address bar will now point directly to that piece of content.
  3. Copy the address, which will look something like https://www.instagram.com/p/Cxyz123AbCd/ for a post or https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cabc123XyZ/ for a Reel.

From the Mobile App:

  1. Find the post or Reel you want to share.
  2. Tap the small paper airplane (Share) icon below the content.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, tap the "Copy link" icon.

This copies the direct link to that specific piece of content, allowing you to share it directly with anyone.

Linking to an Instagram Story (With a Catch)

By nature, Instagram Stories are temporary and disappear after 24 hours. A link to a live story will only work for as long as the story is active. If the story is part of a Highlight on a profile, however, that link will work as long as the Highlight exists.

To grab the link to a live story:

  1. Open the story you want to share while it's live.
  2. Tap the paper airplane (Share) icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select "Copy link" to get the URL.

Just remember to warn people that the link is for a limited time if you're sharing an active story!

Putting Your Instagram URL to Work: Where to Share It

Knowing your URL is one thing, using it to grow your brand is another. An Instagram URL is a bridge connecting your entire online presence back to your Instagram profile. Here's where you should be putting it to get the most impact:

  • Your Website or Blog
  • This is non-negotiable. Add your Instagram URL to your website's header or footer, your contact page, and any author bio pages. Include a small Instagram icon that links directly to your profile for easy access.
  • Your Email Signature
  • Add a clickable link to your Instagram profile in your email signature so contacts, clients, and partners can easily find and follow you.
  • Other Social Media Profiles
  • Cross-promotion is a powerful organic growth strategy. Make sure your Instagram link is in your bio on X (formerly Twitter), your TikTok profile, your Facebook page information, and your LinkedIn contact section.
  • Business Cards and Physical Marketing
  • For in-person networking, include your straightforward URL (e.g., instagram.com/yourusername) on your business cards. You can also generate a QR code that links directly to your URL, letting people scan it with their phone to open your profile instantly.
  • Link-in-Bio Tools
  • While people often use "link-in-bio" tools on Instagram to direct people outward, you can use those same tools elsewhere to centralize all of your important links, including one back to your main Instagram profile.
  • Guest Posts and Features
  • Whenever you write a guest blog post, appear on a podcast, or get featured in an article, make sure your bio includes a link back to your Instagram profile. It drives qualified traffic from interested audiences directly to you.
