How to Transfer a Facebook Page

Transferring ownership of a Facebook Page can feel like a high-stakes task, but the process is surprisingly simple once you understand the permissions and steps involved. Whether you've sold your business, handed off a project to a client, or are restructuring your team, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. We'll cover who can make the change, how to do it step-by-step for both the new and classic Page layouts, and what to do if your Page is managed by a Meta Business Account.

First, Understand Who Holds the Keys to the Kingdom (Page Roles Explained)

Before you can hand over the reins, you need to be sure you have the authority to do so. In the world of Facebook Pages, not all roles are created equal. The ability to transfer ownership rests solely with one specific role: the Admin.

The Admin (The True Owner)

An Admin has complete and total control over a Facebook Page. Think of them as the superuser. An Admin can:

  • Manage all other Page roles and settings.
  • Add or remove other Admins, Editors, Moderators, etc.
  • Edit the Page, create posts, send messages, and run ads.
  • Connect apps and view Page Insights.
  • Most importantly: delete the Page or change its primary ownership.

If you aren't currently an Admin on the Page, you can't transfer it. You'll need to ask an existing Admin to grant you that level of permission first. Simple as that.

What About Other Roles?

You might see other roles like Editor, Moderator, Advertiser, or Analyst. While these roles are great for giving team members specific permissions without handing over full control, none of them can add or remove Admins. An Editor can create content but can't change who runs the page. A Moderator can manage comments but can't touch the Page's settings. For a true ownership transfer, the Admin needs to be the one taking action.

Your Pre-Transfer Checklist: Get These Ducks in a Row First

A smooth handover is all about preparation. Before you click a single button, run through this quick checklist to avoid any frustrating snags or delays.

  • Confirm you are an Admin. Again, this can't be overstated. Go to your Page > Settings > Page Roles (or Page Access for the New Pages Experience) and double-check your role. Your name should be listed under "Admin."
  • Connect with the future owner's personal profile. To grant someone Admin access, they need to have a personal Facebook profile. While it's not strictly necessary to be Friends with them anymore, it can make it easier to find their profile. Alternatively, they must have "Liked" the Page. Get their full name or the email address associated with their Facebook account.
  • Give the new owner a heads-up. Communication is everything. Let them know you're about to send the invitation so they can be on the lookout. This prevents them from missing the notification and letting the invite expire.
  • Have your Facebook password ready. As a security measure, Facebook will ask you to re-enter your password to confirm that you're authorized to make a major change like adding a new Admin.

How to Grant Admin Access: The Step-by-Step Guide

Meta has been rolling out a "New Pages Experience" for some time, so the exact steps you take might look slightly different depending on which version your Page is using. We'll cover both, so you're prepared either way.

For the New Pages Experience (Most Common)

This is the updated layout that more closely resembles a personal profile. If your Page has this modern look, follow these instructions:

  1. Log into Facebook and switch to managing your Page. You can do this by clicking your profile picture in the top-right corner and selecting "See all profiles," then choosing your Page.
  2. Once you're running the Page, click your Page's profile picture again in the top-right corner and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click on New Pages Experience.
  4. You'll land on the "Page Access" screen. Here, click the Add New button next to "People with Facebook access."
  5. A pop-up will explain what this access means. Click Next.
  6. In the search bar, type the name or email address of the person you want to add. Select them from the list when they appear.
  7. You'll now see a screen titled "Give [Person's Name] access to this Page." Here is the most important part: toggle the switch that says "Allow this person to have full control." This is what grants them Admin-level permission.
  8. Click Give Access. For security, Facebook will prompt you to enter your personal profile password to confirm the change.
  9. You're not done yet! The person has now been invited. They must accept the invitation before they gain access. The status will show as "Pending" until they do.

For the Classic Pages Experience

If your Page still has the more traditional layout, your settings will be in a different spot.

  1. Navigate to your Facebook Page.
  2. In the left-hand management panel, scroll down and click on Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu, find and click on Page Roles.
  4. Look for the section titled "Assign a New Page Role." Type the name or email of the person you want to add into the box.
  5. Next to their name, there will be a dropdown menu that likely defaults to "Editor." Click this dropdown and change it to Admin.
  6. Click the blue Add button. Facebook will ask for your password to verify your identity.
  7. Just like with the new experience, this sends an invitation. The new Admin's name will appear at the bottom of the Page Roles list as "Pending" until they accept the role.

What the New Admin Needs to Do

Your job isn't quite finished. Now, it's on the recipient to finalize the process. They will receive a notification on Facebook - and sometimes via email - letting them know they've been invited to become an Admin of the Page. They just need to click the notification and select "Accept." Once they do, they'll immediately have full Admin permissions.

Finalizing the Handover: Removing Your Own Admin Access

For a complete transfer of ownership, you'll likely want to remove yourself from the Page after the new Admin is established. This ensures there's no confusion about who is in charge. It's a simple step, but proceed with caution: once you remove yourself as a full Admin, you immediately lose all control and cannot undo the action. You would need the new Admin to re-invite you if you wanted back in.

You can remove yourself, or the new Admin can remove you. The steps are the same:

  1. Go back to the Page Access or Page Roles section in your settings.
  2. Find your own name in the list of people with full control/current Admins.
  3. Click the three dots (for New Pages Experience) or the "Edit" button (for Classic) next to your name.
  4. Select Remove from Page. Confirm your decision, and you will be immediately removed. The page is now officially transferred.

Common Questions and Troubleshooting

"My Page is owned by a Meta Business Account. Now what?"

This is an important situation for agencies or businesses that manage assets centrally. If your Page is connected to a Meta Business Suite (formerly Business Manager), assigning roles directly on the Page is often blocked. The transfer of ownership must happen inside the hub itself.

The process is similar in concept but in a different location:

  1. Go to business.facebook.com/settings.
  2. Select the correct Business Account from the dropdown if you have more than one.
  3. In the Business settings, go to Accounts > Pages.
  4. Select the Page you want to transfer. You'll see a list of people and partners who have access.
  5. You can add a new person by clicking Add People and granting them "Full Control" access or transfer total ownership by clicking the "Transfer Ownership of Page" button, which is a non-revocable final step.

For most simple sales or handovers, simply adding the new person as an Admin (with Full Control) inside Business Suite and then removing yourself is the safest and cleanest way to manage the transition.

"What if the invitation link isn't showing up?"

If the person you're inviting doesn't see the notification, here are a few things to check:

  • Have them check their email Junk/Spam folder for a message from Facebook.
  • Ask them to visit www.facebook.com/pages and look for the "Invites" tab.
  • Double-check that you entered their name or email address correctly. If not, cancel the pending invitation and send a new one.
