This guide will walk you through the entire process, covering the critical difference between deactivating and deleting a page, how to back up your valuable content, and the concrete steps to permanently remove your page correctly.

Before You Say Goodbye: Important First Steps

Once a Facebook Page is deleted, it's gone for good. There's no "undo" button after the grace period ends. Before you pull the trigger, let's go over a few essential things to consider so you can make this move without any regrets.

Deactivation vs. Deletion: What's the Difference?

The first choice you need to make is whether you want to deactivate your Page or delete it entirely. They sound similar, but the outcomes are completely different.

Deactivating a Page is temporary. Think of it as taking your Page offline. Here’s what it means:

  • Your Page is immediately hidden from the public. No one can find it or see its content.
  • As an admin, you can still access the Page's settings and see everything behind the scenes.
  • You can reactivate the Page at any time, and all your content, followers, likes, and messages will be restored exactly as they were.

Deactivation is the best choice if you think you might need the Page again in the future, are taking a long break, or are temporarily shutting down your business operations.

Deleting a Page is permanent. This is the nuclear option. When you choose to delete:

  • The Page is immediately unpublished, and a 30-day countdown to permanent deletion begins.
  • You have a 30-day grace period to change your mind and cancel the deletion.
  • After 30 days, the Page and all its content - posts, photos, videos, stories, followers, messages, insights - are permanently erased by Facebook. There is absolutely no way to recover it.

Deletion is the right move if your business has permanently closed, you’re undertaking a major rebrand and want a completely fresh start, or you are positive you will never need the Page or its assets again.

Thinking Through the "Why": Common Reasons to Delete a Page

Knowing your "why" solidifies your decision. People usually delete their Facebook Pages for a handful of clear reasons. Does one of these sound like you?

  • Business Closure or Sale: The most straightforward reason. If your business no longer exists, you don’t need the social media accounts associated with it.
  • A Full Rebrand: Sometimes a brand's name, focus, or entire identity changes so much that the old page just doesn't fit. Rather than awkwardly staple a new brand onto an old page, starting with a clean slate is often a better strategy.
  • Consolidating Your Presence: Perhaps you have multiple Pages for the same brand due to past mistakes or mergers. Deleting duplicate or outdated pages helps you channel all your followers and engagement toward one official account.
  • Strategic Platform Pivot: Smart marketing means being where your audience is. If your audience has shifted away from Facebook to platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or LinkedIn, it can make sense to close the underperforming account and focus your energy where it generates real results.
  • Starting Over from Scratch: Maybe the Page was managed poorly in the past, has terrible engagement, attracted the wrong kind of audience, or has a negative reputation. Deleting it gives you the freedom to build a new community from the ground up, correctly.

Don't Lose Your Work: How to Back Up Your Page Data

This is the single most important step before you delete anything. You’ve likely spent years creating posts, sharing photos, uploading videos, and interacting with your community. Do not throw all that content away. Here's how to download a complete backup of your Page.

1. Log in to Facebook with an account that has a Page role with "Full Control."

2. In the top-right corner, click your profile picture and select "See all profiles" to switch to the Page you want to back up.

3. Once you're managing the Page, click its profile picture in the top-right again and go to "Settings &, privacy" >, "Settings".

4. In the left-hand menu, select "Privacy", then click on "Your Page information".

5. Beside "Download your profile information," click "View".

6. On this screen, you can customize your backup. You can choose:

  • Format: HTML is easier for humans to read and browse, while JSON is better if you plan to import the data into another service. For most people, HTML is the best choice.
  • Media Quality: You can download your videos and images in High, Medium, or Low quality. If you want to keep them for your archives, select High.
  • Date Range: Choose to download everything (All time) or select a specific date range.
  • What to Back Up: By default, everything is selected, including posts, photos, videos, comments, and messages. You can deselect anything you don’t need.

7. Once your selections are made, click "Request a Download." Facebook will begin compiling your file. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on how much content is on your Page. You'll receive a notification when it’s ready to download.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Permanently Delete a Facebook Page

Once you’ve backed up your data and are 100% certain that permanent deletion is the right move, you're ready to proceed. The process itself is quick.

How to Delete Your Page Using a Desktop

1. As before, log into Facebook with a profile that has Full Control of the Page you want to delete.

2. Switch to managing that Page by clicking your profile photo in the top-right and selecting it from the list.

3. Once you’re in control of the Page, go to "Settings &, privacy" >, "Settings".

4. Navigate to "Privacy" in the left sidebar, then click "Your Page information".

5. At the bottom of this list, you'll see "Deactivation and deletion." Click the "View" button next to it.

6. You will be prompted to choose between deactivating or deleting. Select "Delete Page" and click "Continue."

7. Facebook will give you one last opportunity to download your information or transfer it. Since you've already backed up your Page, you can confidently click "Continue."

8. For security purposes, you’ll be asked to re-enter your personal profile's password to confirm the deletion. Enter your password and click "Continue."

9. A final confirmation pop-up will appear, warning you that the action is permanent. Click "Delete Page."

What Happens Next? The 30-Day Countdown

Congratulations, you’ve initiated the deletion process. Your Page is now deactivated and invisible to the public. The 30-day "grace period" has begun. During this time, nothing is visible, but the data is still sitting on Facebook's servers, waiting for the final erasure command. If you do nothing, the Page will be permanently deleted after 30 days are up.

Changed Your Mind? How to Cancel a Page Deletion

Sometimes, we act too quickly. If you find yourself regretting the decision within that 30-day window, you're in luck. You can easily cancel the deletion and restore your Page.

1. Log in to the Facebook profile that has administrative rights.

2. Go to your settings: "Settings &, privacy" >, "Settings".

3. In the left sidebar, go to "Privacy" >, "Your Page information".

4. You should see a notification that your Page is scheduled for deletion. Click the "Reactivate" button next to its name.

Your Page will be instantly reactivated, and it will be as if the deletion request never happened. Phew.

Wrapping Things Up: What to Do After Your Page Is Gone

Once your page is officially gone for good, a few simple cleanup steps will ensure a smooth transition for you and your audience.

Update Your Online Presence

The most important step is to scrub any links pointing to your deleted Facebook Page. Start looking for them in a few key places:

  • The header or footer of your website.
  • Your email signature.
  • The "About" or "Bio" sections of your other social media profiles (LinkedIn, Instagram, X, etc.).
  • Online business directories (like Yelp or Google Business Profile).
