How to Remove Someone from a Facebook Business Page

Trying to remove someone from your Facebook Business Page can be surprisingly frustrating, especially as Meta continually updates the Business Suite interface. This guide cuts through the confusion, providing clear, step-by-step instructions for removing users and managing your Page access securely. We'll cover the right way to do it through the Meta Business Suite and troubleshoot the common issues that leave so many social media managers stuck.

Before You Begin: Understand Facebook Page Roles and Permissions

Before you click that "remove" button, it's important to understand the different levels of access people can have to your page. Giving someone the wrong role can create security risks, while removing the wrong person can lock you out unexpectedly. The "New Pages Experience" has simplified roles into two main categories: Facebook Access and Task Access.

Facebook Access (Full Control)

Think of this as the "admin" or "owner" level. A person with Full Control can do everything, including:

  • Create, manage, and delete posts, Stories, and other content.
  • Send messages and respond to comments as the Page.
  • Run ads, view insights, and manage settings.
  • Most importantly: Add or remove other people with Full Control and manage all permissions.

You must have Full Control to remove another person who also has Full Control. If you only have partial access, you won't be able to manage this highest level of permissions.

Task Access (Partial Control)

This is the more granular level of permission, perfect for team members, agencies, or contractors who don't need the keys to the entire kingdom. When someone has Task Access, you can assign them specific responsibilities. They can manage tasks, but they cannot manage page settings or add/remove other people with Full Control. The main tasks you can assign include:

  • Content: Create, manage, or delete posts, Stories, and other content as the Page.
  • Messages & Community Activity: Send messages, respond to and delete comments, and manage other community interactions.
  • Ads: Create, manage, and delete advertisements.
  • Insights: View page performance metrics and audience data.

Giving Task Access is a much safer way to delegate work without handing over complete control of your page - a best practice we'll touch on later.

How to Remove Someone from a Facebook Page (Step-by-Step)

The most reliable way to manage page roles is through the Meta Business Suite. While you can sometimes access these settings from your Page directly, the Business Suite is Meta's central hub for management tools and tends to be the most up-to-date.

Using Meta Business Suite (The Recommended Method)

Follow these steps carefully to revoke a user's access to your page.

  1. Navigate to Meta Business Suite: Log into the Facebook account that has admin access to your Business Page. Go directly to business.facebook.com.
  2. Select the Correct Business Account: If you manage multiple businesses or pages, use the dropdown menu on the top left to make sure you've selected the correct Account that contains the Page you want to edit.
  3. Go to Page Settings: In the bottom-left navigation menu, look for the Settings gear icon. Click on it.
  4. Access Page Permissions: From the settings menu that appears, locate and click on Page access. This is where you'll find the list of everyone who has a role on your page.
  5. Locate the Person to Remove: On the Page Access screen, you'll see two lists: "People with Facebook access" and "People with task access." Find the name of the individual you need to remove from the appropriate list.
  6. Initiate Removal: To the right of the person's name, click the three dots icon (...). This will open a small menu.
  7. Select "Remove Access": From the menu, choose the Remove Access option.
  8. Confirm with Your Password: As a final security measure, Facebook will prompt you to re-enter your password to confirm that you have the authority to make this change. Type your password and click the Confirm button.

Once you confirm, the user’s access is immediately and permanently revoked. They will no longer be able to manage the page, post content, or access any back-end settings.

What If I Can't Remove Someone? Common Problems & Solutions

Sometimes, things don't go as planned. Here are a few common roadblocks you might hit when trying to remove someone from your page and how to resolve them.

Problem 1: The "Remove" Button is Grayed Out or Missing

If you can't click the "Remove access" button or don't see the three-dot menu at all, the reason is almost always the same: You do not have sufficient permissions.

  • The Solution: You need Full Control (Admin access) to remove another person who also has Full Control. If you only have Task Access, you cannot manage other users. You'll need to contact someone on your team who has Full Control and ask them to either elevate your permissions or remove the person for you. To check your own permissions, find your name in the Page Access list - it will state what type of access you have.

Problem 2: The Person Still Has Access After I Removed Them

This is a notoriously confusing issue that usually stems from the difference between Page access and Business Account access.

  • The Solution: Your Page is likely owned by a Meta Business Account (formerly Business Manager), and the person has a role on the Business Account itself, which grants them access to the Page. In this case, removing them from the Page alone isn’t enough. You must remove them from the parent Business Account.
    1. In Meta Business Suite, go to Settings.
    2. Under "Business assets," click People.
    3. Select the person's name from the list.
    4. In the panel on the right, you can see all the assets they have access to. Click the three dots (...) in the top right and select Remove from business account. This will revoke their access to all assets in that portfolio, including your Page.

Problem 3: I'm the Only Person with Full Control, and I Can't Remove a Former Founder or Admin

This situation can occur if the other user created the page or has been an admin for longer. Sometimes, Facebook's system is protective of these "original" admin accounts.

  • The Solution: Unfortunately, this is the most difficult situation to resolve. First, double-check that you've been granted the highest level of Full Control. If so, and you still can't remove the other user, you may need to go through Meta's support channels. Be prepared for a potentially slow process. To avoid this entirely, always make it a policy to have at least two trusted people assigned with Full Control so you're never dependent on a single account.

Best Practices for Managing Your Page Access Securely

Removing a user is often reactive. A stronger approach is to be proactive about who has access to your Page and why. Adopting these habits will save you from future headaches and security risks.

1. Conduct Regular Access Audits

Set a calendar reminder to review who has access to your Facebook Page every quarter. Employees change roles, contractors complete projects, and agencies move on. Don't let old, unnecessary permissions linger on your account. A regular audit takes just five minutes and is one of the easiest ways to keep your page secure.

2. Apply the Principle of Least Privilege

Don't give everyone Full Control just because it's easier. If a team member only needs to schedule posts and reply to comments, grant them Task Access for just those functions. By giving people only the permissions they absolutely need to do their job, you minimize the risk of accidental mistakes or malicious actions having a deep impact on your page settings.

3. Have a Clear Offboarding Process

When an employee or contractor leaves your organization, revoking their social media access should be a day-one priority on your offboarding checklist. Do not wait. Make removing them from your Facebook Page, Business Account, and any other social media tools a standard procedure, just like collecting their laptop or deactivating their email.
