How to Remove My Access to a Facebook Page

When you're finished managing a Facebook Page, removing your access is a quick and essential housekeeping task. Leftover admin permissions can clutter your notifications and pose a potential security risk if an old account is ever compromised. This guide will walk you through the exact steps to remove yourself from any Facebook Page, covering both the current and classic Page experiences on desktop and mobile.

Why You Should Remove Yourself From a Facebook Page

Ending your professional relationship with a Facebook Page - and the brand behind it - is a common scenario for social media managers, agency professionals, and freelancers. Regularly auditing your Page access is good digital hygiene. If you no longer have a reason to be there, it's time to leave.

Here are a few common reasons to remove your access:

  • Client Offboarding: You're a freelancer or agency, and your contract with a client has ended. Removing your access is a standard and professional final step in handing the controls back to them.
  • Changing Jobs: You've left a company where you managed their social media. Your access is tied to your personal Facebook profile, so you should remove it as soon as your responsibilities end.
  • Redundant or Old Pages: The Page is for a project that has ended, a business that closed, or it has been replaced by a new Page. There's no reason to maintain access to a digital ghost town.
  • Cleaning Up Your Workspace: As a social media professional, you might collect access to dozens of Pages over the years. This can lead to a messy Business Manager, endless notifications, and confusion when switching between accounts. Trimming the list helps you focus only on active clients and projects.

Your Pre-Removal Checklist: 3 Things to Do First

Before you hit the "remove" button, run through this quick checklist to make sure you're leaving the Page in good hands and avoiding any accidental problems. Taking a minute now can save you from a major headache later.

1. Confirm Someone Else Has Full Admin Control

Facebook will not allow you to remove yourself if you are the only person with full admin control of a Page. This is a failsafe to prevent Pages from becoming "orphaned" with no one able to manage them. Before you leave, check the "Page Access" or "Page Roles" section to see who else is listed. Ensure at least one other person has "full control" (on New Pages Experience) or is listed as an "Admin" (on Classic Pages).

2. Let the Page Owner Know You're Leaving

As a professional courtesy, inform the business owner or your main point of contact that you are about to remove your access. This is especially important when offboarding a client. Send a quick email saying something like, "As we've wrapped up our project, I will be removing my administrative access from your Facebook Page today. Jane Doe is listed as an Admin with full control, so you are all set. It was a pleasure working with you!"

3. Download Any Final Reports or Content (If Needed)

Once your access is removed, all your permissions are gone instantly. You won't be able to hop back in to check on a post's performance or grab an image you forgot to save. If you need any final analytics reports, portfolio examples, or other assets from the Page, be sure to download them before you remove yourself.

How to Remove Access to a Facebook Page (Desktop Guide)

The process for removing yourself can vary slightly depending on whether the Page you’re leaving uses the New Pages Experience or the Classic layout. They both get you to the same place, but the menu names are a bit different.

For Pages Using the New Pages Experience

Most Pages have been updated to this new layout, which links the Page directly to your personal profile's interface.

  1. Switch to the Page Profile: Go to Facebook and click your profile picture in the top-right corner. In the dropdown menu, select "See all profiles," then choose the Page you want to leave. You are now acting and navigating Facebook as the Page.
  2. Access Page Settings: Once you're switched over, click the Page's profile picture in the top-right of your screen again. This time, select "Settings &, Privacy," then click "Settings."
  3. Open Page Access: In the left-hand settings menu, click on "New Pages Experience." From there, select "Page Access."
  4. Find Your Name and Remove Access: You'll see a list titled "People with Facebook access." Find your own profile in this list. Click the three horizontal dots (...) next to your name. A dropdown menu will appear.
  5. Confirm Removal: Select "Remove Access." Facebook will ask you to re-enter your password to confirm your identity. Once you do, your access to the Page will be revoked immediately.

For Pages Using the Classic Experience

Some pages might still use the older, more traditional layout. The process here starts from your personal profile.

  1. Navigate to the Page: From your personal News Feed, find the Page in your shortcuts on the left or search for it by name.
  2. Go to Settings: Once you're on the Page, look for the "Settings" option in the left-hand management menu. Click it.
  3. Find Page Roles: In the large menu that appears, scroll down and click on "Page Roles."
  4. Locate Your Profile and Remove: Scroll down the Page Roles screen until you see the section "Existing Page Roles." Find your name and profile picture. To the right, there will be a button that says "Edit." Click it, and then click the blue "Remove" link that appears.
  5. Confirm Removal: A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click "Confirm." You may be asked to re-enter your Facebook password to finalize the removal.

How to Remove Access Using the Facebook Mobile App

You can also remove yourself easily using the Facebook app on your phone. The steps are very similar to the desktop version. Once again, the menus differ slightly depending on the Page experience.

For the New Pages Experience (Mobile)

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap your profile picture and the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the bottom-right (on iOS) or top-right (on Android).
  2. Tap the arrow icon next to your name to switch to the profile of the Page you want to leave.
  3. After switching, tap the hamburger menu again.
  4. Scroll down and tap "Settings &, Privacy," then select "Settings."
  5. Tap "Page Settings."
  6. Scroll down to the "New Pages Experience" section and tap "Page Access."
  7. Tap the three dots next to your name and select "Remove Access."
  8. Enter your password to confirm, and you're done.

For the Classic Experience (Mobile)

  1. Open the app and navigate to the Page you want to leave.
  2. On the Page's main view, tap the "Settings" gear icon in the top right corner.
  3. In the settings menu, tap "Page Roles."
  4. Find your name under the list of existing roles and tap the pencil icon next to it.
  5. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a "Remove" button. Tap it, and then tap "Remove" again to confirm. You'll likely need to enter your password to complete the process.

Troubleshooting: "I Can't Remove Myself!"

The most common issue people face is when Facebook won't let them leave a Page. Almost every time, it comes back to the same problem.

Scenario: You Are the Only Admin

If you are the last Admin standing, Facebook blocks your departure to prevent the Page from being abandoned. You cannot remove yourself until you assign full control to someone else.

The Fix: You have two options:

  • Add a New Admin: You must first add another user as an Admin with full control. Go to "Page Access" or "Page Roles," add a trusted person (like the business owner), and make sure they accept the invitation. Once they are officially an admin, you can follow the steps above to remove yourself.
  • Delete the Page: If the Page is entirely obsolete and has no future owner, your other option is to delete it permanently. To do this, go to Settings >, Privacy >, Facebook Page Information. Here you’ll find the option for "Deactivation and Deletion." This action is irreversible, so only do this if you are 100% certain the Page is no longer needed.
