How to Put Your Business Name on Facebook

By Spencer Lanoue
October 31, 2025

Putting your business name on Facebook is the first real step in building your brand on the world's largest social network. It makes you discoverable, credible, and ready to connect with customers. This guide covers everything from choosing the right name and creating a proper Business Page to optimizing it for success and managing it long-term.

First Things First: Why You Need a Business Page, Not a Personal Profile

Before you do anything else, it's vital to understand the difference between a Facebook Profile and a Facebook Page. A Personal Profile is for individuals - it's what you use to connect with friends and family. A Business Page represents an organization, company, or public figure.

Using a personal profile for your business isn't just unprofessional, it's a violation of Facebook's terms of service. They can - and do - shut down profiles that are being used for commercial purposes. Beyond that, a Business Page opens up a world of tools that a profile simply doesn't have:

  • Analytics: Get data on who your audience is, how they found you, and which posts perform best.
  • Advertising: You can only run Facebook Ads from a Business Page. This is essential for growth.
  • Professional Tools: Access appointment booking, call-to-action buttons (like "Shop Now" or "Book Now"), and integrations.
  • Unlimited Followers: Personal profiles are capped at 5,000 friends. Pages can have an unlimited number of followers.

In short, if you want your business to be on Facebook, you need a Business Page. No exceptions.

Choosing the Perfect Name for Your Facebook Page

Your Page name is your online identity. It tells people exactly who you are and what you do. While you can change it later, getting it right from the start saves a lot of headaches. Here are a few guidelines to follow.

1. Use Your Actual Business Name

This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people try to get creative. Your Facebook Page name should match the name on your storefront, your website, and your business cards. Consistency builds brand recognition and trust. If your business is called "Maple Creek Bakery," your Page name should be "Maple Creek Bakery," not "Best Cakes in Town" or "Sarah's Sweet Treats."

2. Keep it Simple and Searchable

How would a potential customer search for you? Avoid adding special characters, excessive capitalization, or jargon. The easier your name is to type, the more likely people are to find you. If your business name is a bit generic, you might consider adding a simple modifier to help people find the right one.

For example, if you own a salon named "The Style Studio," you could use:

  • The Style Studio - Austin (if you're a local business)
  • The Style Studio Hair Design (if you want to specify your service)

3. Check for Availability and Existing Pages

Before committing, do a quick search on Facebook to see if anyone else is using your name. You don’t want to compete for attention with another business, especially one in your area. Also, check major search engines to see what comes up for that name. Securing a unique name early on is a big advantage for your brand.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Create Your Facebook Business Page

Ready to get started? Creating a Page is a straightforward process. You'll need to be logged into your personal Facebook profile to act as the administrator, but don't worry - none of your personal information will be displayed on your Business Page.

Step 1: Start the Page Creation Process

From your Facebook home screen, click the grid-like Menu icon in the top right corner. In the "Create" column on the right, you'll see an option for Page. Click it to begin.

Step 2: Enter Your Page's Basic Information

Facebook will ask you for three key pieces of information on the left-hand side of the screen:

  • Page Name: Enter the business name you just decided on.
  • Category: Start typing what your business does (e.g., "Restaurant," "Marketing Agency," "Clothing Store"). Choose the most accurate category, as this helps Facebook show your Page to the right people. You can add up to three categories.
  • Description / Bio: Write a short sentence or two that sums up what your business offers. You can refine this later, but for now, just give people a clear idea of what you do.

As you fill this out, you'll see a preview of your Page update on the right. Once you're happy with the basics, click the Create Page button.

Step 3: Add Your Business's Contact and Location Details

Next, Facebook will prompt you to add more important information. It’s best to fill this out completely, as it builds credibility.

  • Contact: Add your business website, phone number, and email.
  • Location: Enter your physical address if you have a brick-and-mortar store. If you are an online-only or service-based business, you can select that option instead.
  • Hours: Set your opening hours so customers know when they can visit or contact you.

Step 4: Upload Your Profile &, Cover Photos

Visuals are everything on social media. This is your chance to make a strong first impression.

  • Profile Picture (170x170 pixels): Your logo is usually the best choice for this. It will appear as a circle next to all your posts and comments, so make sure it's clear and recognizable even when small.
  • Cover Photo (851x315 pixels): This is the large banner image at the top of your Page. Use it to showcase your products, your team, your storefront, or a special offer. It’s prime visual real estate, so don't leave it blank.

After uploading your images, you've officially created your Page!

Optimizing Your New Page for Success

Your Page is live, but the work isn't done. Taking a few extra optimization steps will make a huge difference in how discoverable and professional your Page looks.

1. Create a Custom Username (Vanity URL)

When you first create a Page, it has a generic URL with a long string of numbers (e.g., facebook.com/pages/Your-Business/123456789). A custom username makes your URL clean, memorable, and professional (e.g., facebook.com/YourBusinessName).

From your Page, go to Settings > General Page Settings. You’ll see an option to edit your Username. Choose one that’s as close to your business name as possible. This username (also called your @handle) is how people can easily tag your business in their posts.

2. Fill Out the "About" Section Completely

Your Page's "About" section is a goldmine for information. The more details you provide, the easier it is for customers to find you and understand what you offer. Go to your Page and click on Edit Details to add more information about your history, mission, and products or services. Use keywords that people might use to search for a business like yours.

3. Set Up Your Call-to-Action (CTA) Button

At the top of your Page, just under your cover photo, is a blue action button. You can customize this to encourage specific actions. Click on the ... menu and select Add Action Button. Popular options include:

  • Book Now: For service-based businesses like salons or consultants.
  • Shop Now: To link directly to your online store.
  • Learn More: To send new visitors to your website’s homepage.
  • Call Now: To encourage immediate phone inquiries.
  • Send Message: A great option for starting conversations via Facebook Messenger.

4. Pin a Welcome Post

Once your page is set up, make a great first post. Introduce your business, highlight a special offer, or share your most popular product. Then, click the three dots on the top right of the post and select Pin to top of Page. This post will stay at the top of your feed, serving as a welcome message for all new visitors.

Already Have a Page? How to Change the Name

If you made a Page a while ago and now need to update the name - maybe due to a rebrand or because you made a typo - you can request a change. Keep in mind that Facebook reviews all name-change requests.

To request a name change:

  1. Make sure you are an Admin of the Page.
  2. From your Page, go to Settings on the left-hand menu.
  3. In the General Page Settings, click Edit next to your current Page Name.
  4. Enter your new desired name and follow the on-screen instructions.

Facebook is more likely to approve your request if the new name still reflects what the Page is about. Drastic, misleading changes will likely be rejected. The review process can take a few days, and you'll be notified of the decision.
