How to Give Full Control on a Facebook Page

Handing over full control of your Facebook Page can feel like giving someone the keys to your entire digital storefront. Whether you're onboarding a new business partner, hiring an agency, or transitioning roles, getting it right is essential. This guide provides a complete walkthrough of how to grant full control on a Facebook page, a clear explanation of what that access really means, and the best practices for doing it securely.

First, Understand What "Full Control" Actually Means

Before you click that "Invite" button, it's important to know the difference between the modern access levels Meta now uses for Pages. The old-school roles like "Admin," "Editor," and "Moderator" that you might remember have been replaced by a more granular system. Today, access is split into two main categories: Task access and Facebook access.

Task Access: The Daily Driver

Think of Task access as giving a team member a specific set of tools to do their job, but not the keys to the whole workshop. People with Task access operate through their own Facebook accounts to manage the Page within Meta Business Suite or Creator Studio. They can be granted permissions for specific duties:

  • Content: Create, manage, or delete posts, Stories, and more. This is perfect for your social media content creator.
  • Messages & Community Activity: Send and respond to messages, moderate comments, and manage community interactions. Ideal for a community manager.
  • Ads: Create, manage, and delete ads. Essential for your ad specialist or marketing agency.
  • Insights: View page performance and audience analytics. This is great for an analyst or a stakeholder who just needs to see how things are going.

You can mix and match these permissions, giving someone access to content and insights, but not ads or messages. This "a la carte" approach follows the principle of least privilege - granting only the minimum access needed for someone to do their job. It's the most secure option for the vast majority of your team members, freelancers, and collaborators.

Facebook Access (with Full Control): The Ownership Key

Giving someone "Facebook access with full control" is the big one. It is the modern equivalent of the old "Admin" role, but even more powerful. A person with full control can do everything someone with Task access can do, plus:

  • Manage all Page permissions, including adding or removing other admins and people with Facebook access (including you!).
  • Change essential Page settings and information.
  • Permanently delete the Page.

Read that first bullet point again. Someone with full control has the power to remove you from your own Page. This level of access should be reserved only for a tiny number of extremely trusted individuals, like a co-owner or a business partner. It is not something you grant lightly to a new hire or an outside agency unless they are a fully dedicated partner in every sense.

Step-by-Step: How to Give Someone Full Control

Granting access is a straightforward process, but you need to follow the steps carefully. You'll need to be an existing admin (have full control) of the Page to do this. Make sure you are logged into your Facebook profile that has control and you're interacting as your Page.

From a Desktop Computer (The Easiest Method)

Using a desktop gives you the clearest view of all settings. Here's how to do it in the New Pages Experience:

  1. Switch to Your Page's Profile: In the top-right corner of Facebook, click your profile picture. In the dropdown menu, select "See all profiles," and then choose the Page you want to manage.
  2. Go to Page Settings: Once you are managing as the Page, click your Page's profile picture in the top-right corner again. From the dropdown, select "Settings & privacy," and then click "Settings."
  3. Navigate to Page Access: In the left-hand settings menu, click on "New Pages Experience." This will open up another menu of options beneath it. Select "Page Access."
  4. Add New Person: In the "People with Facebook access" section at the top, click the blue "Add New" button on the right.
  5. Find the Person: A pop-up window will appear. Click "Next" and then type the name or email address of the person you want to invite into the search bar. Make sure you select the correct person from the list that appears. Inviting the wrong John Smith could be a big problem!
  6. Grant Full Control: This is the most important step. On the "Give Access" screen, you'll see a toggle for "Allow this person to have full control." You must turn this toggle on. Read the warning that appears, it explains everything this person will be able to do. If you are certain, click the blue "Give Access" button.
  7. Confirm Your Identity: For security, Facebook will ask you to re-enter your password to confirm that you're authorized to make this change. Enter it and click "Confirm."

The invitation is now sent! The person you invited has 31 days to accept it. Until they do, the invitation will show as "Pending" in your Page Access settings. A friendly message to them via text or email is a good idea to ensure it doesn't get missed, particularly for a crucial admin invite like this.

A Security Checklist Before Granting Full Control

Giving someone full ownership of your digital property is a very big step. Before you do, run through this mental checklist to protect your assets and avoid future headaches.

1. Have you verified the person's identity and their Facebook profile?

Scammers and hackers create fake or imposter profiles trying to dupe page owners into giving them access. Always double check with the person directly via a phone or video call, verifying their email address is right before making invites.

2. Is "Full Control" truly necessary?

Re-read the capabilities of Task access. Can the person accomplish everything they need to do with customized Task access? Could you start them with limited access and elevate their permissions later if needed? Always default to the lowest level of permission needed unless there's a compelling business reason, like co-ownership or sale of the page.

3. Do you have a trust framework and a written offboarding procedure in place?

When you give someone the ability to remove you, you're operating on pure trust. For a partner or co-owner, this trust is usually defined in your operating agreement. For an agency, it should be defined in your service contract. That contract should always include an offboarding clause that requires them to cede all control and assist you in removing them if needed at the end of the engagement.

4. Have you enabled Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your own account?

Your own personal profile security is the ultimate master key for your page! If your own Facebook account is compromised, a hacker could use it to seize all the Pages you manage. Securing your account with 2FA makes it exponentially harder for anyone to break in and abuse your permissions. Don't work with important collaborators who refuse to activate 2FA in our modern digital environment.

What if You Need to Remove a Page Owner?

If you are an admin with full control, you can remove other users by navigating back to the "Page Access" settings and revoking their privileges. However, if another person with full control removes you from the Page, you will lose all access. In that situation, you must contact Facebook Business Support immediately. Be prepared to provide official documentation, such as business registration records, to prove your ownership of the Page.

Final Thoughts

Granting full control of your Facebook Page is a major business decision that comes with significant security risks. Understanding the difference between 'Task access' and 'Facebook access' is critical for making informed choices that enable collaboration while protecting your digital assets. Always treat assigning permissions as a serious responsibility, as it is often much easier to grant access than it is to revoke it and fix any resulting problems. This guide provides a clear framework to help you make the right decisions, securing your Page as you grow your business.
