How to Edit Your Name on a Facebook Business Page

Changing your Facebook Business Page name can feel high-stakes, but the process is manageable when you know the steps and the rules. It's an important part of keeping your brand consistent, whether you're rebranding, correcting a mistake, or simply making your purpose clearer. This guide will walk you through the entire process, from pre-change prep to what you need to do after your request is approved.

Why Change Your Facebook Page Name in the First Place?

There are plenty of good reasons to update your Page name. While you don’t want to do it too often, a strategic name change can be a powerful move for your business. Most name changes come down to one of these four reasons:

  • A Full Rebrand: This is the most common reason. Your startup's original name might not fit anymore, you may have legally changed your business name, or you’re launching a completely new brand identity. A name change on Facebook is a necessary step to align your social presence with your new direction.
  • Adding Clarity or a Specialty: Maybe you started as "Thompson’s Cafe," but now you're known for your incredible sourdough. Changing to "Thompson’s Sourdough and Cafe" adds instant clarity for new visitors and helps you show up in more specific searches. It tells people exactly what you're about right from the name.
  • Correcting an Error or Improving Professionalism: Typos happen. A name like "Janes Custom Jewellery" can undermine your credibility. Or perhaps you started with a casual name like "My Side Hustle Crafts" and now you're ready to present a more professional image like "Redwood Craft & Co."
  • A Business Pivot: If your services have evolved, your Page name should, too. A photographer who started with "Laura Miller: Wedding Photos" but now focuses on corporate headshots might change their name to "Laura Miller: Professional Headshots." This prevents confusion and attracts the right kind of clients.

Understanding Facebook's Rules Before You Request a Name Change

This is where most people get tripped up. Facebook has specific guidelines for Page names to prevent spam, scams, and misrepresentation. Before you even try to make an edit, make sure your new name follows these rules to avoid an automatic rejection.

1. The Name Must Be Authentic

Your Page name must accurately represent what your Page is about. You can't just call yourself something generic like "Best Coffee" or "Local Government information" if you aren’t that entity. The name should either be your real business name or describe what the Page does without misleading users.

2. Keep the Formatting Normal

Facebook wants Page names to look clean and professional, not like spammy marketing banners. Your intended name should avoid:

  • EXCESSIVE CAPITALIZATION. Using all caps is a no-go unless your brand is an acronym (like "NASA"). Proper nouns and the first letter of each word are fine, but "SARAH'S AWESOME BAKERY" will be rejected.
  • Unnecessary symbols or punctuation. You can't use symbols like ® or ™, or add extra characters like ***!!!Greatest Deals!!!*** just to get attention.
  • Super long descriptions. Your Page name shouldn't include a tagline or a lengthy description. For example, instead of "Crescendo Music - San Diego's Top-Rated Guitar Lessons for All Ages," your name should just be "Crescendo Music." Put the rest of that information in your "About" section.

3. No Misleading Words or Phrases

Words like "Official," "Fan Page," or "Public Figure" can only be used if the Page is, in fact, the authentic and verified presence for that entity. Adding "Official" to your brand name just to make it sound more important is against the rules.

4. Drastic Changes Will Likely Be Rejected

You can't change a Page about baking into a Page about car repair. Facebook expects a Page's topic to remain consistent to prevent users from being duped. A page owner could, in theory, build a large following for a popular topic like "Cute Puppies Daily" and then suddenly switch the name to a scammy product to take advantage of the audience. Facebook’s review process aims to prevent this. Your new name should be a logical evolution of the old one.

The Step-by-Step Guide: How to Edit Your Facebook Business Page Name

The technical steps for changing your name are fairly simple. Most accounts have been migrated to Facebook’s "New Pages Experience." We'll cover those steps first, followed by the process for the older, "Classic" Page layout for those who haven't made the switch.

Changing Your Name with the New Pages Experience

  1. Check Your Admin Role: Only someone with full "Admin" control can request a name change. If you're an editor or moderator, you won't see the option. You can see your role under Page Access settings.
  2. Switch to Your Page Profile: On Facebook, click your profile picture in the top right corner. From the menu, find your Business Page and click on it to start acting as the Page. You'll know you’ve switched when you see the Page’s profile picture and name at the top.
  3. Navigate to Settings: Click on your Page's profile picture in the top right corner again. Drop-down to “Settings & privacy,” and then click “Settings.”
  4. Access General Page Settings: You should land on the "General Page Settings" screen. Your current Page name will be the very first option at the top. To the right of it, click the "Edit" link.
  5. Enter Your New Name: A box will appear where you can type your new name. As you type, be mindful of all the rules mentioned above about capitalization, symbols, and length.
  6. Review and Request Change: Once you've entered the new name, click the blue "Review Change" button. Facebook will show you a confirmation screen displaying your current name and your requested new name. If it looks correct, confirm that you want to request the change.

Changing Your Name with a Classic Page (If you haven't switched)

If your Page still has the older layout, the process is slightly different but still straightforward.

  1. Go directly to your Facebook Page while logged into your personal profile.
  2. On the left-hand column, beneath the Page's profile picture, find and click on "About."
  3. Under the "General" section, you'll see your Page's name listed. Click the "Edit" link next to it.
  4. A text box will appear where you can enter your business's new name.
  5. After entering your new name, click "Continue" and then "Request Change."

My Name Change Request is Submitted. Now What?

Once you submit your request, it goes into a review queue. Don't panic if it isn't approved instantly. Facebook states that the review process typically takes around three business days, but it can sometimes happen faster. During this review period, you cannot submit another request or take actions meant for Admins on the page.

You'll receive a notification from Facebook once they’ve made a decision. If your request is approved, your Page name will automatically update. It’s important to note that Facebook is transparent about this change - a public story may appear on your Page feed notifying all your followers that the name has been updated from [Old Name] to [New Name]. This is to prevent followers from being confused or feeling deceived.

Troubleshooting: What to Do if Your Name Change Gets Rejected

Receiving that dreaded "request denied" notification is frustrating, but it happens. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the rejection is due to a violation of one of the naming guidelines.

Here’s what to do if you’re denied:

  1. Reread the Rules Slowly: Go back to Facebook's Page name policies and compare them directly against the name you requested. Did you use an unallowed character? Is the capitalization correct? Does the name drastically change the Page's purpose?
  2. Try an Incremental Change: If your new name is very different from your previous one, Facebook’s automated systems may have flagged it as a potential policy violation. Try making a smaller, more gradual change first. For example, instead of going from "Bakeology" to "The Cake Factory Florida," first try changing it to "Bakeology Cake Factory." Once that's approved, you might have an easier time adding "Florida."
  3. Update Your 'About' Section First: Align the rest of your Page with the desired change before making another request. If you're pivoting your focus, update your Page's Category, description, and website to reflect that before you ask for the new name. This shows the reviewer that the name change is part of a legitimate shift in your brand.
  4. Don't Re-Submit Immediately: Bombarding Facebook with the same rejected request over and over is a good way to get your account temporarily flagged. Take a few days to reconsider your approach before submitting an updated name.

Your Name Change is Approved! Now What? (A Quick Checklist)

Getting your new name is just the first step. To maintain a strong and consistent brand presence, you have a few more basic housekeeping tasks to complete.

  • Update Your Page Username: Your username is your custom Facebook URL (e.g., facebook.com/YourUsername). This does not automatically change with your Page name. You have to update it manually in your Page Settings to match your new branding. If you go from "Bob's Burger Bar" to "The Burger Joint Chicago," your URL should follow suit.
  • Publish an Announcement Post: While Facebook may post an automatic notification, it's a good idea to create your own post about the change. Explain the reason for the rebranding in a friendly and exciting way. This engages your community and quiets any confusion. You can pin this post to the top of your Page for a week or so.
  • Update Links on Other Platforms: Make certain that the Facebook link in your Instagram bio, on your website, in your email signature, and on any other social profiles points to your updated username and reflects your new company name. Consistency is everything.
  • Refresh Your Branding: Does your profile picture or cover photo still contain your old name or logo? If so, get those updated to complete the new look and feel of the brand.
