How to Deactivate a Business Instagram

Thinking about taking a break from your business Instagram? Whether you're feeling burned out, rebranding, or pausing operations, stepping away is a completely valid choice. This guide will walk you through exactly how to deactivate your business account, explain the difference between deactivating and deleting, and show you an alternative you might not have considered.

Deactivate vs. Delete: Which is Right for You?

Before you click any buttons, it's important to understand the two main options you have for taking your account offline. They sound similar, but their consequences are drastically different. Making the right choice now can save you a world of regret later, so let's break it down.

Temporary Deactivation: The "Pause Button"

Think of deactivation as putting your Instagram account in temporary storage. When you deactivate your account:

  • Your profile, photos, comments, and likes will be completely hidden from public view. It's like your account never existed.
  • Your username is reserved for you. No one can take it while your account is deactivated.
  • All your content is saved. When you're ready to come back, everything will be exactly as you left it.
  • You can reactivate your account at any time simply by logging back in.

Who is this for? Deactivation is the best option if you need a break, are temporarily closing your business, or are unsure about your long-term plans. It gives you the space you need without any permanent consequences. It’s a low-risk way to step back, reassess your social media strategy, and come back whenever you're ready.

Permanent Deletion: The "Point of No Return"

Permanent deletion is exactly what it sounds like. It is final and irreversible. When you delete your account:

  • Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers will be permanently removed.
  • You can never get your content back. Ever.
  • You won't be able to sign up again with the same username, nor can you add that username to another account.
  • Once the 30-day grace period is over, there is absolutely no way to recover your account or its data.

Who is this for? Deletion should only be considered if you are 100% certain you are closing your business for good and will never need access to your Instagram account or its content again. It's the digital equivalent of shredding all your old files. We strongly recommend you download a copy of your information from Instagram's "Your Activity" settings before you proceed with deletion.

Our Advice: When in doubt, always choose to deactivate. You lose nothing by deactivating, and you retain the option to come back. Deletion is a final decision that you can't undo.

An Alternative: Switch Back to a Personal Account

Many businesses hit a point where the pressure of a "business" profile feels like too much. You might be a solopreneur who wants to reclaim some privacy or a brand that’s pivoting to a more community-focused, less metric-driven approach. Instead of deactivating, consider a third path: converting your Business Account back to a Personal Account.

Why Switch to a Personal Account?

A Personal Account removes the business-facing features, which might be exactly what you need to reduce the pressure. Here's what changes:

  • You lose access to analytics. No more worrying about reach, impressions, or engagement rates.
  • Promotional features are removed. You can't run ads or boost posts anymore.
  • Contact buttons disappear. The "Email," "Call," or "Directions" buttons on your profile will be removed.
  • Your profile can be set to private. This is the biggest advantage. Business Accounts must be public, but a Personal Account gives you the option to approve who follows you and sees your content.

Switching is a great middle ground. It allows you to keep your community and your content while removing the performance anxiety that can come with a business profile.

How to Switch from a Business to a Personal Account

Ready to make the switch? The process is simple and happens right within the Instagram app. You can always switch back to a Business or Creator account later if you change your mind.

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page.
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines (the "hamburger" menu) in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap on Settings and privacy.
  4. For some accounts, the next step is Creator tools and controls. For others it may be Business tools and controls. Tap whichever you see.
  5. Look for the option to Switch account type and tap it.
  6. Tap Switch to personal account.
  7. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Tap Switch to personal account again to confirm your decision.

That's it! Your account will now function as a personal profile, giving you more privacy and fewer business metrics to manage.

How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Instagram Business Account (Step-by-Step)

If you've decided that a temporary break is the right move, you'll need to use a web browser - this option isn't available in the Instagram app. You can do this from either a desktop computer or your mobile browser (like Safari or Chrome) on your phone.

Here’s the step-by-step guide to temporarily hiding your profile:

  1. Log in to Instagram on a Web Browser: Open your browser and go to Instagram.com. Enter your username and password to log in.
  2. Go to Your Profile: Click on your profile picture. On desktop, this is usually in the top-right or bottom-left corner. On mobile web, it's in the bottom-right.
  3. Click "Edit Profile": Next to your username, find and click the Edit profile button.
  4. Find the Deactivation Option: This part has changed recently with Meta's new Accounts Center. You will now be taken to the Accounts Center. Look for Personal details and click on it.
  5. Navigate to Account Ownership and Control: Click on Account ownership and control.
  6. Select Deactivation or Deletion: You will see an option for Deactivation or deletion. Click this.
  7. Choose the Correct Account: If you have multiple accounts linked, select the Instagram business account you wish to deactivate.
  8. Select "Deactivate Account": Make sure the "Deactivate account" option is selected (and not "Delete account"). Your profile is about to be temporarily deactivated. Click Continue.
  9. Enter Your Password: For security, you'll be asked to re-enter your password to confirm your identity. After entering it, click Continue.
  10. Provide a Reason and Confirm: Instagram will ask why you're deactivating. Choose a reason from the dropdown menu (or just choose "Something else"). This is just for their internal data. Finally, click the blue Deactivate Account button.

Your account is now deactivated and completely hidden. Keep in mind that Instagram only allows you to deactivate your account once per week.

How to Reactivate Your Account

The best part about deactivation is how easy it is to come back. When you're ready to return to Instagram, all you need to do is log back into your account from the app or a web browser. The act of logging in automatically starts the reactivation process.

Give it a little time. It can sometimes take a couple of hours for all of your content and followers to fully reappear. Just be patient, and everything will be restored just as you left it.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Business Account

Proceed with extreme caution. This action cannot be undone. We advise that you download a copy of your data before you delete your account so you have a personal backup of all the content you've created.

Like deactivation, the deletion process must be done through Meta's Accounts Center, typically accessed via a web browser.

  1. Go to Meta's Accounts Center: The easiest way is to follow the same initial steps as deactivation. Go to your Instagram profile on a browser, click Edit Profile > Personal details > Account ownership and control > Deactivation or deletion.
  2. Select the Account to Delete: Choose the business account you want to permanently erase.
  3. Choose "Delete Account": This time, select the Delete account option. Read the on-screen information carefully, as it details the permanent nature of this action. Click Continue.
  4. Provide a Reason: Select a reason why you’re deleting your account from the dropdown menu and click Continue.
  5. Enter Your Password: For final security confirmation, enter your account password and click Continue.
  6. Final Confirmation: You will be shown a final screen confirming the permanent deletion of your account. It will state the date when your account will be permanently deleted (typically 30 days from the current date). To finalize the process, click the Delete Account button.

For the next 30 days, your account will be hidden. If you change your mind during this grace period, you can cancel the deletion simply by logging back in. After those 30 days pass, however, your account and all of its data will be wiped forever.
