How to Create a Facebook Username

By Spencer Lanoue

Setting up a custom Facebook username is one of the easiest ways to make your profile or Page look instantly more professional and be far easier for people to find. A username gives you a clean, memorable URL (like facebook.com/yourname) instead of a long, clunky string of random numbers. This guide will walk you through exactly how to create or change your username for both personal profiles and business Pages, plus tips for choosing the perfect one.

What Exactly is a Facebook Username (and Why Do You Need One)?

First, let’s clear up a common point of confusion: your name is different from your username. Your name is what appears on your profile and next to your comments (e.g., Jane Smith). Your username dictates your custom URL, also known as a "vanity URL."

When you first create a Facebook account, your profile URL looks something like this:

facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063458763012

That's not exactly easy to remember, share, or print on a business card. By creating a username, you transform it into something clean and professional:

facebook.com/janesmithcreative

Having a custom username does a few important things for you or your brand:

  • It creates a simple, shareable link. Telling someone to find you at "facebook.com/downtowncoffeeshop" is far better than reciting a long line of numbers.
  • It establishes brand consistency. You can use the same username across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X, making it easier for your audience to find you everywhere. This strengthens your brand identity and makes you look more official.
  • It signals professionalism. A custom URL shows that you've taken the time to complete your profile, which builds trust and credibility with visitors, clients, or customers.

How to Create a Facebook Username for Your Personal Profile

Facebook has been moving many user settings into the centralized "Meta Accounts Center," which means the steps have changed slightly in recent months. Here’s the up-to-date process for both desktop and mobile.

On a Desktop Computer:

  1. Log into your Facebook account. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner to open the menu.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy, and then click on Settings.
  3. You'll likely be directed to the Meta Accounts Center. If not, look for the blue "See more in Accounts Center" link and click it. This is now the primary location for managing profile details.
  4. On the left side of the Accounts Center, click on Profiles. Then, select the profile you want to update (if you have multiple, like an Instagram account linked).
  5. Click on Username.
  6. Enter your desired username in the field. Facebook will let you know immediately if it's available. If it’s taken, you'll need to try a variation.
  7. Once you've found an available username you like, click Done to save it.

Your new URL is now active! You can test it by typing facebook.com/yournewusername into your browser.

On the Facebook Mobile App (iOS or Android):

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap the menu icon (your profile picture and three horizontal lines) in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings.
  3. At the top of the next screen, you'll see the Meta Accounts Center box. Tap anywhere inside that box to open it.
  4. Underneath Profile settings, tap Profiles and choose the account you're updating.
  5. Tap on Username.
  6. Type in your desired username. The app will confirm whether it's available or not in real-time.
  7. Once you've settled on one, tap Done. Your username is now set.

How to Create a Username for Your Facebook Business Page

Setting a username for a Business Page is a foundational step in branding your business on social media. Thankfully, the process is straightforward and happens directly within the Page settings, not the Meta Accounts Center.

Note: You must be an Admin of the Page to change the username.

On a Desktop Computer:

  1. First, switch from your personal profile to the Business Page you want to manage. You can do this by clicking your profile picture in the top-right corner and selecting "See all profiles," then choosing your Page.
  2. Once you are on your Page, click your Page's profile picture in the top-right and select Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  3. On the General Page Settings screen, you'll see your Page Name and then a field for Username. Click Edit next to Username.
  4. Type your desired username into the field. Common formats are just the business name (e.g., `theloftcafe`) or the business name with a location descriptor (e.g., `theloftcafephilly`).
  5. If the username is available, click Save Changes. Facebook may ask you to enter your password to confirm.

Your Page's custom URL is now live! It will look like facebook.com/yourpageusername and also fb.me/yourpageusername, a handy shorter version.

Best Practices for Choosing the Perfect Username

Picking a username might seem trivial, but it has a real impact on your brand's discoverability. The goal is to make it as obvious and simple as possible. Here are some tips to follow.

1. Prioritize Consistency Above All Else

Your top priority should be claiming the same username across all major social media platforms. Perform a quick search to see if your desired handle is available on Instagram, TikTok, X, and any other platform you use. Having `@brandname` everywhere creates a unified, professional online presence and makes you far easier to find.

2. Keep It Simple and Memorable

The best usernames are easy to say, spell, and type. Avoid things that can cause confusion:

  • Unnecessary numbers: sunshinebakery123 sounds less established than sunshinebakery. Only add numbers if they are part of your actual brand name.
  • Special characters or underscores: @the_plant_depot is harder to communicate verbally than @theplantdepot. Use periods (.) only if needed for readability and avoid dashes or other symbols if you can.
  • Creative but confusing spellings: Using `kwalitykoffee` might seem clever, but it’ll force you to constantly correct people. Stick to standard spelling.

3. Make It Relevant to You or Your Brand

Your username should clearly signal who you are. For a personal brand, your name is a great start (e.g., `johnmillerfitness`). For a business, your full business name is the best option (`midtownmuralco`). If your name is common and already taken, you can add a qualifier that describes what you do, like `katiechenrealty` or `adamgphotographer`.

4. Have a Backup Plan

There's a good chance your first choice might already be taken. Don't get discouraged! Here are some common ways to modify it while keeping it professional:

  • Add an industry keyword: `janedoe` → `janedoecreative` or `janedoeart`.
  • Add a location: `cornerstonecafe` → `cornerstonecafeboston`.
  • Add an "official" word: Use "weare," "get," "hey," or "official" at the beginning, or "HQ" or "inc" at the end. For example, `getyourbrand` or `yourbrandhq`.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Sometimes, setting a username doesn't go as smoothly as planned. Here are a few common roadblocks and how to navigate them.

"This username isn't available."

This is the most common issue. Even if you search for the username and can’t find an active account, it might still be unavailable. An account may have been disabled but not deleted, or the username could be reserved. Your only option here is to try a different variation using the tips from the section above.

"This Page isn't eligible to have a username."

This message often appears for brand-new Business Pages. Facebook is sometimes hesitant to allow brand new pages to claim a username immediately, potentially as a way to prevent spam or squatting. While they don't publish exact numbers, the general consensus is that a Page should have at least 25 to 50 followers and be a few weeks old before you can set a username. If you get this message, focus on populating your Page with content and gaining a small following first, then try again later.

Error Message About Rules or Characters

Facebook has a few technical rules for usernames:

  • They must be at least five characters long.
  • They can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) and periods (.).
  • They cannot contain generic terms or extensions (e.g., you can't have .com or .net in your username).
  • You can't impersonate someone else.

If you're getting an error, double-check that your username doesn't violate any of these guidelines.
