How to Close an Instagram Business Account

By Spencer Lanoue

Closing your Instagram business account is a big step, whether you're rebranding, shutting down a project, or just simplifying your online presence. This guide will walk you through all your options - from temporarily deactivating your profile to permanently deleting it, and even switching back to a personal account. We'll cover each process with clear, step-by-step instructions so you can feel confident in your choice.

Before You Go: Understanding Your Options

First, it's important to know the difference between deactivating, deleting, and switching your account type. Each action has a different outcome, and picking the right one now can save you a lot of frustration later. Let's break down the three main paths you can take.

Option 1: Temporarily Deactivating Your Account

Think of deactivation as putting your account on pause. When you temporarily deactivate your account, your profile - along with all your content like photos, videos, comments, and likes - becomes completely hidden from the public. To everyone else, it’s as if your account doesn't exist. However, all your data is safe and sound, waiting for you to return.

This is the best option if:

  • You need a mental health break from social media but aren't ready to delete everything forever.
  • Your business is seasonal, and you want to go dark during the off-season without losing your followers or content.
  • You're feeling uncertain about permanent deletion and want to test life without your account for a while.

The best part about deactivation is its flexibility. You can bring your account back online at any time simply by logging back in. Just be aware that Instagram only allows you to deactivate your account once per week.

Option 2: Permanently Deleting Your Account

This is the nuclear option. When you permanently delete your Instagram account, it’s gone for good. There is no turning back. All your photos, videos, comments, likes, DMs, and followers will be erased from Instagram's servers forever. Additionally, your username will be permanently unavailable - you won’t be able to use it again on a new account, and no one else can claim it either.

This is the right choice if:

  • You are 100% positive that you will never need this account or its content again.
  • You're shutting down a business for good and want to remove its digital footprint completely.
  • You have privacy concerns and want to completely wipe your slate clean.

Instagram does give you a 30-day grace period after you initiate the deletion process. If you change your mind within those 30 days, you can log back in to cancel the deletion. If you don't, your account will be deleted permanently.

Option 3: Switching Back to a Personal Account

Perhaps you don't want to get rid of your account entirely, but you no longer need the business features. In this case, switching back to a personal account is the perfect middle ground. You get to keep all your existing content, followers, and your username. The only thing that changes is that you lose access to the professional tools.

This is a great idea if:

  • Your side hustle is now just a hobby, and you don’t need to track analytics or run ads anymore.
  • You sold your business but want to keep the account's followers for a new, personal project.
  • You simply want a less "professional" presence on the platform without starting from scratch.

When you switch, your professional dashboard, post insights, contact button, and ability to promote posts will all be removed. The historical data from your insights will also be gone, so be sure to save any important metrics before making the switch.

The Essential First Step: Back Up Your Data

Before you deactivate, delete, or make any major changes, always back up your data. This is your personal safety net. Instagram allows you to download a complete copy of everything you've ever shared on the platform, including:

  • All of your photos and videos (in their original quality).
  • Your Stories, even the expired ones.
  • Your direct messages.
  • Comments you've made and received.
  • Profile information and follower lists.

Even if you're certain you want to delete everything forever, having this backup file costs you nothing and might be meaningful to you years down the road. It provides a complete history of your account that you can keep for your records.

Here’s how to request your data backup:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select "Your activity."
  4. Scroll all the way down and tap "Download your information."
  5. Tap "Request a download." You’ll see a list of accounts linked in your Accounts Center, make sure you select the correct one.
  6. You can choose between a complete copy or select specific types of information. It's usually best to get the complete copy.
  7. Follow the prompts to finalize the request. Instagram will begin preparing your file.

Instagram says this can take up to 14 days, but for most accounts, you’ll get an email with a download link within a few hours or a day. You'll have four days to download your data from the time you receive the email, so don't wait too long.

How to Switch Your Business Account to a Personal Account

If you've decided you just want to shed the business features but keep your account, making the switch is straightforward and can be done right from the app.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to go to your profile.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (☰) at the top right.
  3. Go to "Settings and privacy."
  4. If a search bar appears at the top, just type “switch” and select "Switch account type."
  5. If there's no search bar, tap "Creator tools and controls" or "Business tools and controls" (the wording varies depending on your account).
  6. Tap "Switch account type."
  7. Select "Switch to personal account" and confirm your choice in the pop-up.

And that's it! Your account will immediately revert to a personal profile. Your professional dashboard will disappear, along with your past insights data. Your content and followers will remain untouched.

How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Instagram Account

If you're ready for a break, you can deactivate your account. Instagram has streamlined this process through the Accounts Center, allowing you to begin directly from the app.

  1. Open Instagram, go to your Profile, and tap the (☰) menu button.
  2. Next, head to the Accounts Center and press Personal Details.
  3. Click Deactivation or deletion. From there you'll be able to select the account that you want to deactivate.
  4. You will be taken to a page to confirm your choice. Make sure you select Deactivate account, then press continue.

To reactivate your profile, simply log back into your account from any device. It might take an hour or two for everything to reappear, but all your content will be just as you left it.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

This is your final opportunity to pause and reflect. Deleting your account is irreversible. Once the 30-day grace period is up, there is no way to recover your profile, username, or content. If you've backed up your data and are 100% decided, here are the steps to proceed.

Like deactivation, Instagram has moved this functionality to the Accounts Center. The process to delete is similar, but on the confirmation page make sure you don't hit the wrong button!

Note: The process can only be started from your native mobile Instagram app on a smart device like a mobile phone or tablet.

  1. Go to your profile page by tapping on your profile photo. From there select the menu icon (☰) and press settings.
  2. Similar to the deactivation method above - go to "Accounts Center," then "Personal details > Account ownership and control > Deactivation or deletion."
  3. Choose the account you want to delete and after you press it select the option to "Delete Account." Now press continue.
  4. Instagram will prompt you to confirm your reason for leaving from a dropdown menu. Choose the one that fits best.
  5. You'll now be taken to a final confirmation page. Read it carefully to ensure you are permanently deleting the correct account. If there are no doubts, hit the final "Delete Account" button.

Your profile will immediately become hidden from public view. The 30-day countdown begins now. To cancel the deletion, just log back into the account within that window. If you ignore it for 30 days, your account and all its data will be gone forever.
