How to Close an Instagram Business Account

Closing your Instagram business account is a big step, whether you're rebranding, shutting down a project, or just simplifying your online presence. This guide will walk you through all your options - ranging from temporarily deactivating your profile to permanently deleting it, and even switching back to a personal account. We'll cover each process with clear, step-by-step instructions so you can feel confident in your choice.

Before You Go: Understanding Your Options

First, it's important to know the difference between deactivating, deleting, and switching your account type. Each action has a different outcome, and choosing the right one now can save you a lot of frustration later. Let's break down the three main paths you can take.

Option 1: Temporarily Deactivating Your Account

Think of deactivation as putting your account on pause. When you temporarily deactivate your account, your profile - along with all your content like photos, videos, comments, and likes - becomes completely hidden from the public. To everyone else, it’s as if your account doesn't exist. However, all your data remains safe and waiting for you to return.

This is the best option if:

  • You need a mental health break from social media but aren't ready to delete everything forever.
  • Your business is seasonal, and you want to go dark during the off-season without losing your followers or content.
  • You're feeling uncertain about permanent deletion and want to test life without your account for a while.

The advantage of deactivation is its flexibility. You can reactivate your account whenever you choose simply by logging back in. Just note that Instagram allows you to deactivate your account only once per week.

Option 2: Permanently Deleting Your Account

This is the most definitive option. When you permanently delete your Instagram account, it’s gone forever. There’s no going back. All your photos, videos, comments, likes, DMs, and followers will be erased from Instagram's servers permanently. Additionally, your username will be unavailable - you won't be able to reuse it or have anyone else claim it afterward.

This is the right choice if:

  • You are 100% sure you will never need this account or its content again.
  • You’re shutting down a business entirely and want to remove its digital footprint.
  • You have privacy concerns and want to wipe your digital presence clean.

Instagram provides a 30-day grace period after you initiate deletion. If you change your mind within those 30 days, you can log in to cancel the process. If you don't, your account will be irreversibly deleted.

Option 3: Switching Back to a Personal Account

If you no longer require the business features but want to keep your account, switching back to a personal profile is a simple and effective solution. You retain all your content, followers, and username. The only change is losing access to professional tools and insights.

This is a good idea if:

  • Your side hustle is now a hobby, and you no longer need to track analytics or run ads.
  • You sold your business but want to keep the followers for a personal project.
  • You prefer a less corporate presence on the platform without starting from scratch.

When you switch, your professional dashboard, post insights, contact button, and promotion features will be removed. The historical insights data will also be gone - so save any important metrics beforehand.

The Essential First Step: Back Up Your Data

Before you deactivate, delete, or make any significant changes, always back up your data. This step serves as your safety net. Instagram allows you to download a complete copy of everything you've shared on the platform, including:

  • All your photos and videos (in original quality)
  • Your Stories, including expired ones
  • Your direct messages
  • Comments you've made and received
  • Profile information and follower lists

Even if you’re sure you want to delete everything, having a backup costs nothing and might become valuable later. It provides a complete record of your account that you can keep for personal reference.

Here’s how to request your data backup:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select "Your activity."
  4. Scroll down and tap "Download your information."
  5. Tap "Request a download." Ensure you select the correct account if you have multiple linked in the Accounts Center.
  6. You can choose to download the full archive or select specific data types, usually, the full copy is best.
  7. Follow the prompts to submit your request. Instagram will prepare your data file.

Processing can take up to 14 days, but most users receive an email with a download link within hours or a day. You will have four days to download your data once you receive the email, so don’t delay.

How to Switch Your Business Account to a Personal Account

If you want to retain your followers and content but lose the business features, switching to a personal account is quick and easy from the app.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (☰) at the top right.
  3. Go to "Settings and privacy."
  4. If a search bar appears, type “switch” and select "Switch account type."
  5. If there's no search bar, tap "Creator tools and controls" or "Business tools and controls" (depending on your account).
  6. Tap "Switch account type."
  7. Select "Switch to personal account" and confirm your choice in the prompt.

Your account will immediately revert to a personal profile. Your professional dashboard and insights will disappear, but your content and followers will remain unchanged.

How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Instagram Account

If you want a break, you can deactivate your account via the Accounts Center, which allows you to do so directly from the app.

  1. Open Instagram, go to your Profile, and tap the (☰) menu.
  2. Navigate to the Accounts Center and select Personal Details.
  3. Tap Deactivation or deletion. You will then be able to choose which account to deactivate.
  4. Confirm your choice by selecting Deactivate account and pressing continue.

To reactivate your profile, simply log back into your account from any device. It might take a few hours for everything to reappear, but your content will be intact.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

This option should be carefully considered. Deleting your account is final. After the 30-day grace period, recovery is impossible. If you're certain, follow these steps:

Instagram uses the Accounts Center for deletion as well. The process is similar, but on the confirmation page, ensure you select the correct options to delete your account.

Note: You must do this from the Instagram app on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.

  1. Open your profile by tapping your photo, then tap the menu (☰) and go to settings.
  2. Navigate to "Accounts Center," then "Personal details >, Account ownership and control >, Deactivation or deletion."
  3. Choose your account and press "Delete Account." Confirm your choice.
  4. Pick a reason from the dropdown menu to leave, then continue.
  5. Review the final confirmation carefully. If all is correct, tap the final "Delete Account" button.

Your account will immediately become hidden. The 30-day countdown begins. To cancel, log in again within that window. If you do nothing, all your data and account details will be lost after 30 days.
