How to Change Ownership of a Facebook Page

Transferring ownership of a Facebook Page is a process that sounds simple but comes with a few critical steps that can easily trip you up. Whether you're selling a business, handing over responsibilities to a new team member, or onboarding a client, a clean handoff is essential. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough for changing Page ownership securely and correctly, covering both the direct Page settings and the professional Meta Business Suite methods.

Before You Begin: Key Concepts to Understand

Before you click a single button, let’s get on the same page about how Facebook manages permissions. Understanding these distinctions will prevent headaches and missteps down the road.

Facebook Access vs. Task Access (The New "Admin")

Facebook has updated its terminology with the "New Pages Experience." The old roles like Admin, Editor, and Moderator are gone. Now, permissions are broken down into two main types:

  • Task Access: This is for specific duties. You can grant someone access to manage only messages, comments, ads, or insights. People with Task Access operate through tools like Meta Business Suite and don't have the ability to switch into the Page directly on Facebook. This is great for assigning limited roles but is not what you need for an ownership transfer.
  • Facebook Access: This is the big one. Granting someone Facebook Access allows them to switch into the Page profile and manage it directly from Facebook. Within this category, you can choose to give someone “Full Control,” which is the new equivalent of an Admin. To change ownership, the new owner MUST be granted Facebook Access with Full Control.

Why You Should Use a Meta Business Portfolio

While you can manage a Page directly from your personal profile, the professional standard is to use a Meta Business Portfolio (previously known as Business Manager or Business Suite). Think of it as a central hub where all your business assets - like your Facebook Page, Instagram account, and Ad Account - are held securely.

Managing your Page this way offers several advantages:

  • Separation: It keeps your personal Facebook profile completely separate from your business assets. You don't have to be 'friends' with team members to grant them access.
  • Security: It provides a clear and secure way to manage permissions. Removing someone from the Business Portfolio revokes their access to everything at once.
  • Scalability: It’s built for teams and agencies, making it easy to assign roles and manage multiple pages or ad accounts without chaos.

For a true business-to-business transfer of ownership, using the Meta Business Portfolio method is highly recommended.

Method 1: Transferring Ownership from Your Facebook Page Settings

This method is for Pages managed directly from a personal profile. It’s a straightforward process, but you must follow the steps carefully, especially concerning the built-in security delay.

Step 1: Navigate to Page Settings

First, make sure you are logged into Facebook and acting as the Page. You can switch from your personal profile to your Page profile by clicking your profile picture in the top-right corner and selecting it from the menu.

  1. Once you're controlling the Page, click your Page's profile picture in the top-right corner again.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy, then click Settings.
  3. In the new menu, click on New Pages Experience and then select Page Access.

Step 2: Add the New Owner with Full Control

You'll now see a list of people who have access to your Page. To add the future owner:

  1. Next to "People with Facebook access," click the Add New button.
  2. A screen will pop up explaining what Facebook Access means. Read it and click Next.
  3. In the search bar, type the name or email address of the person you want to add. They must have a personal Facebook profile. Once you find them, select their profile.
  4. Now, you'll see a screen titled "Give [Person's Name] access to your page." This is the most important step. On this screen, toggle the switch for Allow this person to have full control.
  5. A pop-up will appear listing all the permissions this includes, such as deleting the Page and removing other admins. This is the power an owner needs. Click Give Access.

Step 3: Confirm the Invitation

For security, Facebook will ask you to re-enter your personal profile password to confirm you’re authorizing this change. Enter it and click Confirm.

An invitation has now been sent to the new person. They have 31 days to accept it. They will receive a notification on Facebook to review and accept the invitation.

*IMPORTANT* Security Wait Period: Once the new admin accepts the invitation, they cannot remove other admins (including you) for 7 days. This is a non-negotiable security measure from Meta to prevent unauthorized takeovers of Pages.

Step 4: Remove Yourself from the Page (After 7 Days)

Once the 7-day waiting period is over, the new owner can complete the transfer by removing you from the Page. This finalizes their sole ownership.

The new owner with Full Control must follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the same Page Access settings section.
  2. Find your profile name in the list of "People with Facebook access."
  3. Click the three-dot icon next to your name.
  4. Select Remove Access from the dropdown menu.
  5. They will need to enter their Facebook password to confirm the removal.

Once confirmed, you will no longer have access to the Page. The ownership transfer is complete.

Method 2: Transferring Ownership via Meta Business Portfolio (The Professional Method)

This is the ideal method for agencies, consultants, or when selling a business to another company. It provides a clean break and keeps personal profiles out of the equation. Both parties will need to have set up a Meta Business Portfolio.

Step 1: The New Owner Provides Their Business ID

Before you can initiate the transfer, the recipient needs to give you their Meta Business Portfolio ID. They can find this by:

  1. Going to business.facebook.com/settings.
  2. Clicking on Business Info from the left-hand menu.
  3. Their Business ID will be listed right under their Business Portfolio name. They just need to copy this ID and send it to you.

Step 2: The Current Owner Assigns the Page to a Partner

Now, as the current owner, you will add the new owner’s business as a "partner" with full control over the Page.

  1. Go to your own Business Portfolio at business.facebook.com/settings.
  2. In the left menu, under Accounts, click on Pages.
  3. Select the Page you want to transfer from your list of Pages.
  4. In the Page’s dashboard, click the Assign Partners button.
  5. You'll be asked if you want to give a partner access via their Business ID or by generating a link. Choose Business ID and click Next.
  6. Paste the recipient's Business ID into the text field.
  7. On the next screen, you’ll assign permissions. Scroll to the bottom and toggle on Full Control (All current and future permissions). This grants them complete ownership-level access.
  8. Review the permissions and click Next. The transfer is now initiated.

Step 3: The New Owner Accepts and Finalizes the Transfer

The new owner will receive a notification and an indication in their own Business Portfolio that a partner has shared an asset with them. Once they accept, their Business Portfolio is now a co-manager of the Page with full control.

To finalize the ownership change, you must remove your own Business Portfolio's access to the Page. This creates a clean ownership transfer.

As the original owner:

  1. Go back to your Business Portfolio settings, under Accounts >, Pages.
  2. Select the Page you just transferred.
  3. You should see your business name and the new partner's business name listed under "Partners."
  4. Click the three-dot icon next to your business name and select Remove. This action relinquishes your company's ownership of the Page entirely.

The Page now lives exclusively in the new owner's Business Portfolio.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Why can't I remove an admin?

This is almost always due to the 7-day security waiting period for new admins. If the person who needs to perform the removal was only granted Full Control within the last week, they simply have to wait. There are no shortcuts around this.

What if I just took over the page? Can I transfer it right away?

Possibly not. To prevent fraud, Facebook often imposes restrictions on brand new Pages or on accounts that have only recently been made admins. If you've had Full Control for less than a week, you may need to wait before you can add another user with Full Control.

My Page is connected to an Instagram account. What happens to it?

When you transfer Page ownership via the Business Portfolio, you're only transferring the Page itself. Connected assets like Instagram accounts or Ad Accounts must be managed separately. Ideally, all related assets should be moved into the new owner’s Business Portfolio for streamlined management.

Does the new owner need to be my friend on Facebook?

For Method 1 (Page Settings), it helps if you are friends, but it isn't a strict requirement as long as you can find them by email. For Method 2 (Business Portfolio), it is completely unnecessary, as the entire transaction is handled at the business level, not the personal level.

Final Thoughts

Successfully changing ownership of a Facebook Page hinges on granting the right level of access - "Full Control" - and understanding the security protocols in place, like the 7-day waiting period. Using a Meta Business Portfolio to assign a partner offers a cleaner, more professional transfer for businesses and completely separates your Page management from personal profiles.
