How to Change a Facebook Page

Thinking about giving your Facebook Page a refresh? Whether you're rebranding, updating your business details, or trying to optimize your layout, making changes to your page is a common and necessary task. This guide will walk you through exactly how to change the most important parts of your Facebook Page, from your name and URL to your template and admin access.

First, Which Version of Facebook Pages Are You Using?

Before we jump into the steps, it's important to know that Facebook has been rolling out the "New Pages Experience." Your page might look different from someone else's, and the location of settings can vary slightly. Don't worry, the process is very similar for both.

  • New Pages Experience: This version is designed to feel more like a personal profile. You "switch" into your Page to manage it, and it has its own dedicated news feed. Management settings are often streamlined.
  • Classic Pages: This is the traditional layout that has been around for years. You manage it directly from your personal account without switching profiles.

Most of the instructions below are for the New Pages Experience, as it's becoming the standard. If you're using a Classic Page, the steps will be very similar, usually found under a "Settings" tab on the top or left-hand side of your page.

How to Change Your Facebook Page Name and Username

Your Page name and username (@handle) are two of the most critical elements of your brand identity on Facebook. Changing them is possible, but Facebook has some rules in place to prevent confusion and spam.

Changing Your Page Name

Your Page name is your official business or brand title. It's what appears at the top of your page and in search results. Rebranding or correcting a typo are common reasons for a change.

Here's how to request a name change:

  1. From your personal News Feed, click your profile picture in the top right and select "See all profiles." Choose the Page you want to switch to.
  2. Once you've switched to your Page, click your Page's profile picture in the top right.
  3. Select Settings & Privacy, and then click Settings.
  4. You should see the General Page Settings screen. Next to your current name, click Edit.
  5. Enter your new desired Page name and click Review Change.
  6. You'll be asked to confirm your request, which may require you to enter your password.

A Few Important Notes on Changing Your Page Name:

  • It's a review process. Facebook will review the change, which can take a few days. They're checking to make sure it doesn't violate their Page naming guidelines.
  • What's not allowed? You can't use misleading terms, generic words (e.g., "Pizza"), symbols, excessive capitalization, or phrases that violate a person's or organization's rights. The name should accurately reflect the Page's purpose.
  • Don't change it too often. Frequent changes can be flagged as suspicious. If your name change is approved, you won't be able to change it again for another 60 days.
  • Followers will be notified. To maintain transparency, Facebook notifies people who follow your page that the name has been updated.

Changing Your Page Username (@URL)

Your username determines your unique Facebook URL (e.g., facebook.com/YourUsername) and your taggable handle (@YourUsername). A clean, branded username is essential for marketing materials and makes it easy for people to find and tag you.

The steps are nearly identical to changing your name:

  1. Switch to your Page profile.
  2. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. On the General Page Settings screen, you'll see your Username. Click Edit.
  4. Enter your new username. If it's available, you'll see a green checkmark.
  5. Click Save Changes. Your password might be required to confirm.

Tips for a Great Username:

  • Keep it consistent: If you can, use the same username you use on other social media platforms like Instagram, X, and TikTok.
  • Make it memorable: It should be easy to say and spell. Avoid long strings of numbers or confusing abbreviations.
  • Check for availability: Someone else might already have it. Have a few variations ready just in case (e.g., adding "Co" or "App" to the end).

Updating Your Page’s Core Business Information

Outdated contact details, hours, or services are a surefire way to frustrate potential customers. Keeping this information fresh is one of the easiest ways to improve your Page's effectiveness.

To access these details, go to your Page and find the About section (it might be in a tab on the left or under the "More" dropdown). From there, you can edit various fields.

Key Information to Keep Updated:

  • Category: This helps Facebook understand what your Page is about and can unlock certain features. Go to the "About" section and find "Edit Page Info" or "Edit Details." You can select up to three categories that best describe your brand (e.g., "Marketing Agency," "Restaurant," "Software Company").
  • Contact & Basic Info: This is where you can change your phone number, email address, and website. Make this as easy to find as possible.
  • Location: If you have a physical storefront, make sure your address is correct. This is critical for local SEO and check-ins. If you're a service-area business or purely online, you can either hide your address or designate a service area.
  • Hours of Operation: Edit these for holidays, seasonal changes, or permanent updates. You can set specific hours for each day of the week or choose options like "Always Open" or "No Hours Available."
  • The "About" Description: This is your elevator pitch. Briefly explain what your organization does and who it's for. Keep it concise and impactful. You might also have a longer "Additional Information" or "Our Story" section to provide more context.

Changing Your Page Template and Tabs

Your Page template controls the default layout of buttons and tabs to best suit your type of business. For example, a "Services" template will prominently feature a Services tab, while a "Shopping" template will prioritize a Shop tab.

How to Change Your Page Template:

  1. From your Page, go to Settings.
  2. On the left-hand menu, click on Templates and Tabs. (This is a common location on Classic Pages). For the New Page Experience, these settings can sometimes be integrated elsewhere, often requiring you to customize the layout directly.
  3. You'll see your current template. Click the Edit button to see other options like "Business," "Nonprofit," "Venues," "Politicians," or "Video Page."
  4. Choose the one that best fits your goals and click Apply Template.

How to Customize Your Tabs:

Once you've set a template, you can further customize which tabs are visible and in what order they appear. Common tabs include Posts, About, Reviews, Photos, Videos, Events, and Shop.

  1. In the same Templates and Tabs settings area, you'll see a list of your tabs.
  2. To reorder them, simply click and drag a tab to a new position.
  3. To add or remove a tab, click the toggle switch next to it. Some tabs, like "Home" and "Posts," are permanent and cannot be removed.

Customizing your tabs allows you to guide your visitors' experience. If customer testimonials are important, move the "Reviews" tab higher. If you're a video creator, make sure the "Videos" tab is near the top.

Managing Page Roles and Gaining Access

As your team grows, you'll need to give other people access to help manage your Page. Facebook's "Page Access" settings allow you to grant permissions without giving away your personal login credentials.

Understanding Page Access Levels (New Page Experience):

  • People with Facebook access: This is the highest level of permission. These individuals (often called Admins) can switch into the Page and manage it directly. They can do everything, including deleting the Page, managing permissions, and posting content. Only give this level of access to trusted individuals.
  • People with task access: This level is more limited. You can assign specific tasks for people related to Content, Messages, Community Activity, or Ads. For instance, a community manager could get task access to respond to comments and messages but wouldn't be able to edit page settings.

How to Add or Remove Someone from Your Page:

  1. Switch to the Page you want to manage.
  2. Go to Settings from the top-right dropdown menu.
  3. In the left menu, select Page Access.
  4. To add someone new, click Add New next to either "People with Facebook access" or "People with task access."
  5. Search for the person by name or email, select their profile, and then choose which permissions you want to grant them.
  6. Click Grant Access. The person will receive a notification to accept the invitation.
  7. To remove someone, click the three dots next to their name in the Page Access screen and select Remove Access.
