How to Add a Page on Facebook

Creating a Facebook Page is the foundation for building your brand, business, or community on the world's largest social network. This guide provides a complete, step-by-step walkthrough for adding a Page on both desktop and mobile, followed by essential next steps to set your new Page up for success from day one.

First, Why Do You Need a Facebook Page?

You might be managing fine with your personal profile, but a dedicated Page unlocks a different level of opportunity. Your personal profile is for friends and family, a Page is your brand's professional storefront. It's the difference between chatting in your living room and opening a shop on Main Street.

Here’s what a Facebook Page offers that a personal profile doesn’t:

  • Professional Identity: It separates your personal life from your business or brand, creating a polished, public-facing presence that shoppers and followers can trust.
  • Powerful Analytics (Insights): A Page grants you access to Facebook Insights, where you can see who your audience is, where they're from, when they're online, and which of your posts they engage with the most. You can't improve what you don't measure.
  • Advertising Capabilities: To run an ad on Facebook, you need a Page. It’s your ticket to using Facebook's powerful ad targeting tools to reach new customers, promote products, or grow your audience.
  • Community Building Features: Pages are designed for public engagement. You can add buttons like "Shop Now," "Book Appointment," or "Contact Us," and you can build a community of followers who are specifically interested in what you have to offer.
  • No Friend Limit: Personal profiles are capped at 5,000 friends. Facebook Pages can have unlimited followers, giving your brand limitless room to grow.

Before You Begin: A Quick Prep List

Having these few things ready will make the setup process much faster. Don't worry about getting them perfect right away, you can always change them later.

  • Page Name: This should be your business name or the name you want people to know you by. Keep it simple and recognizable. For example, "Jen's Handcrafted Jewelry" instead of "J H Jewelry Designs 2024 LLC."
  • Category: You'll need to choose a category that best describes what your Page is about (e.g., Local Business, Restaurant, Blogger, Musician/Band). This helps Facebook show your Page to the right people.
  • A Short Bio/Description: Just a sentence or two explaining what your Page is about. Think of it as your elevator pitch. "We sell delicious, handcrafted sourdough bread and pastries in downtown Austin."
  • Profile Photo and Cover Photo: Your profile photo should ideally be your logo (170x170 pixels). Your cover photo is a larger space (851x315 pixels) to showcase your brand's personality, a product, or your team.

How to Add a Page on Facebook: The Desktop Method

Creating a Page from your computer in a web browser gives you a larger screen to work with, making it easier to see all the options at once. Here’s how it’s done.

Step 1: Locate the "Create a Page" Menu

Log in to your personal Facebook account. In the top right corner, find the grid icon that looks like nine dots (the "Menu"). Click it. On the right side of the menu that appears, under the "Create" section, click on Page. Alternatively, you can often find a "Pages" icon in the left-hand navigation menu, from there, you’ll see a button that says "+ Create New Page".

Step 2: Enter Your Basic Page Information

You'll now see a page creation screen with a preview on the right. On the left side, you need to fill out three fields:

  • Page name (required): Enter the name of your business or brand.
  • Category (required): Start typing a word that describes your business. Facebook will suggest categories. You can pick up to three. For a coffee shop, you might pick "Coffee Shop," "Restaurant," and "Cafe."
  • Bio (optional): Write a short description. This text appears in a prominent spot on your Page, so make it clear and compelling.

As you type, you'll see a live preview of how this information will look on desktop and mobile. When you're done, click the blue "Create Page" button at the bottom.

Step 3: Fill Out Your Page Details

Once you hit "Create Page," a few new sections will appear below. This is where you round out your Page's profile.

  • Contact info: Add your website, phone number, and email. Providing this info builds trust and makes it easy for potential customers to reach you.
  • Location: If you have a physical location (like a store or office), add your address, city, and zip code. This is vital for local businesses aiming to attract foot traffic.
  • Hours: Set your operating hours. You can choose "No hours available," "Always open," or "Open at selected hours."

Click "Next" when you’re done.

Step 4: Add Your Profile Pictures

This screen prompts you to add your main images. This is where your brand's visual identity starts to take shape.

  • Add Profile Picture: Click this and upload your logo or a professional headshot. This is the little circular icon that will appear next to all of your posts and comments.
  • Add Cover Photo: Click this to upload your banner image. Use this space for a photo of your product, your storefront, or a graphic that communicates your brand's value.

You can drag the cover photo to reposition it perfectly. When you're happy, click "Next" again.

Step 5: Connect WhatsApp (Optional)

Facebook will ask if you want to connect your WhatsApp account to your Page. This allows you to add a WhatsApp button directly to your Page and run ads that click through to a WhatsApp chat. If this makes sense for your business, add your number. If not, just click "Skip."

Step 6: Build Your Audience

Now, Facebook will suggest you invite friends from your personal profile to like your new Page. This is a great way to get some initial traction. Select friends you think would be genuinely interested and click "Send Invites." Then, click "Next."

Step 7: Stay Informed

Finally, Facebook will ask about notifications. You can choose to get notifications about your Page on your personal profile and marketing emails from Meta. Make your selections and click "Done."

That's it! Your Page is now live. Facebook will take you on a quick tour to show you its main features.

How to Add a Page on Facebook: The Mobile App Method

Prefer to do things from your phone? The process is just as simple on the Facebook app for iOS and Android.

  1. Open the Menu: Open the Facebook app and tap the "Menu" icon on the bottom right (it might be three horizontal lines).
  2. Navigate to Pages: Tap on the "Pages" option. You may need to tap "See More" if it’s not immediately visible.
  3. Start Creating: On the Pages screen, tap the "+ Create" button, usually found in the top left corner.
  4. Get Started: Tap the big blue "Get Started" button at the bottom of the introductory screen.
  5. Name Your Page: Enter your Page name and tap "Next."
  6. Choose Your Category: Search for and select the categories that best describe your Page. Pick at least one and tap "Create."
  7. Fill in the Details: The app will now guide you through the same steps as the desktop version: writing your bio, adding contact info, listing your location and hours. Complete each section and tap "Next" to continue.
  8. Add Your Photos: You'll be prompted to add your profile photo and cover photo. Tap the camera icons to upload images directly from your phone's photo library.
  9. Invite Friends: Just like on desktop, you can invite friends to like your new Page.

Once you’ve gone through the final prompts, your page will be created and you'll be able to manage it directly from the mobile app.

Your Page Is Live! Now What?

Creating the Page is just the first step. To make it a valuable asset for your brand, you need to flesh it out and start engaging your audience. Here are five things you should do right away.

1. Complete Your "About" Section

Navigate to your Page and click on the "About" tab. Fill out everything you can. The more complete your Page is, the more professional and trustworthy you'll appear. Add your story, list your products or services, and add any other details that might be relevant to your audience.

2. Customize Your Page URL (Vanity URL)

By default, your Page will have a clunky URL with a string of numbers. You can create a clean, easy-to-remember username (e.g., facebook.com/YourBusinessName). Go to your Page Settings, click on "General," and you’ll see an option to edit your username. It’s a small change that makes a big impact on professionalism.

3. Create Your First Post

Your Page is blank! Don't let it sit empty. Create a warm welcome post. Introduce your brand, explain what people can expect to see on your Page, and maybe ask a question to encourage your first few followers to engage.

Pro Tip: Once you've published it, click the three dots (...) on the post and select "Pin to top of page." This will keep your welcome post at the top so it’s the first thing new visitors see.

4. Choose a Call-to-Action (CTA) Button

Right below your cover photo, you'll see a blue button. By default, it might say "Send Message." You can change this to something more aligned with your business goals. Click it to edit the button and choose from options like "Shop Now," "Book Now," "Call Now," "Learn More," or "Watch Video." This directs your visitors to take the most important action.

5. Explore Your Page Settings and Roles

Familiarize yourself with your Page settings. Here you can tweak notification settings, set up message auto-replies, and manage Page roles. If you'll have team members helping you, you can invite them by going to `Settings` > `Page Roles`. You can assign them levels of access like Admin (full control), Editor (can post and edit), or Analyst (can view insights).
