How to Update Linktree on Instagram

By Spencer Lanoue
October 31, 2025

Your link in bio is one of the most valuable pieces of real estate on your Instagram profile, and keeping it current is a direct line to driving traffic exactly where you want it to go. This guide breaks down not just how to update your Linktree quickly but also how to manage it strategically to get the most out of every click. We’ll cover the step-by-step process of adding, removing, and organizing your links, plus some best practices for turning your Linktree into a powerful conversion tool.

Why Keeping Your Linktree Updated Is a Big Deal

You might think of your Linktree as a "set it and forget it" tool, but treating it like a dynamic part of your content strategy can make a huge difference. An outdated Linktree is a missed opportunity. It can lead to confusion, broken links, and a poor user experience for your followers who are actively trying to engage with you. Here’s why consistent updates are so important:

  • Drive Traffic to Timely Content: Just launched a new product, published a new YouTube video, or wrote a killer blog post? The moment that content goes live on your feed or Stories, you should update your Linktree to match. This creates a seamless path for followers who want to learn more, turning their immediate interest into action.
  • Capitalize on Promotions and Sales: Running a limited-time offer, a flash sale, or an early-bird special for an event? Your Linktree should lead directly to that offer. Placing it at the top of your list makes it impossible to miss and can significantly boost conversions during critical sales periods.
  • Promote Your Most Relevant Platforms: Are you trying to grow your TikTok following or build your email list? Prioritize those links. As your business goals shift, so should your Linktree. If your priority this quarter is to grow another channel, make sure that link is front and center.
  • Maintain a Professional Image: A Linktree filled with expired promotions, old articles, or sold-out products looks messy. It signals to your audience that you aren't paying attention to the details. A tidy, updated page shows that you are organized, current, and respectful of your followers' time.

How to Update Your Linktree: The Step-by-Step Guide

Updating your links is a fast process once you know your way around the dashboard. Whether you’re on your desktop or phone, the steps are straightforward. Let’s walk through the most common updates you'll need to make.

Step 1: Log In to Your Account

Pretty simple - head over to the Linktree website and log in using your username and password. This will take you directly to your Admin page, which is your command center for all things links. The page is very user-friendly, with your link list in the center and a live preview of your Linktree on the right side of the screen.

Step 2: Adding a New Link

This is what you'll be doing most often. Whenever you have new content you want to promote, you’ll add it here.

  1. On your Admin page, find and click the ‘Add link’ button. It’s usually a big, obvious button at the top of your links list.
  2. A new link module will appear. Here, you'll see two primary fields: 'Title' and 'URL'.
  3. In the ‘URL’ field, paste the complete web address you want your followers to go to. Make sure you include the https:// part. Double-check it for any typos.
  4. In the ‘Title’ field, type the text you want to appear on the button. Be clear and direct (more on this later!). For example, instead of just "Blog," try something like "New: My Top 5 Productivity Hacks."
  5. Once you've entered the URL and Title, the link is live! There’s no separate "save" button for each link, Linktree saves it automatically. You'll see it instantly appear in the phone preview on the right.

Step 3: Rearranging Your Links

Not all links are created equal. You'll want to place your most important or time-sensitive link at the very top. Reordering them is simple.

  1. Hover your cursor over the dots (usually three or six of them) on the left-hand side of the link module you want to move.
  2. Your cursor will change to a hand icon. Click and hold.
  3. Simply drag the link up or down to its new position in the list.
  4. Let go, and Linktree will automatically save the new order. Your live page is updated instantly.

For example, if you're running a 48-hour flash sale, you’d drag that link to the very top. Once the sale is over, you can either delete it or drag it back down.

Step 4: Removing or Deactivating an Old Link

Keeping your Linktree clean is just as important as adding new links. Don't let old promotions or irrelevant content clutter the page.

  1. Find the link you want to remove from your list.
  2. Look for the trash can icon on the bottom right of that link module. Click it.
  3. Linktree will ask you to confirm the deletion. Click ‘Delete’ again, and the link will be permanently removed.

Pro-Tip: If you think you might use the link again later and don't want to delete it permanently, you can just deactivate it. Look for the green toggle switch on the right side of the link module. Click it to turn it grey. This will hide the link from your live Linktree page but keep it in your admin panel for you to reactivate later.

Step 5: Editing an Existing Link

Made a typo or need to update a URL? You don’t have to delete the link and start over.

  1. Just click on the Title or URL field of the link you want to edit.
  2. Make your changes directly in the text box.
  3. Click outside the box, and the changes are saved automatically. You’ll see the update in your preview panel.

Best Practices for a High-Performing Linktree

Now that you know the mechanics of updating your Linktree, let's talk strategy. A well-organized Linktree can dramatically increase your click-through rates and guide your audience more effectively. Think of it as a mini-landing page.

1. Keep It Clean and Uncluttered

When a user clicks your link in bio, they shouldn't be met with a massive list of 20 options. This causes "analysis paralysis," where they get overwhelmed and end up clicking nothing. A good rule of thumb is to stick to 3-7 links at a time. Be selective and only feature your most important content and calls to action.

2. Write Clear, Action-Oriented Titles

The text on your link buttons matters. Generic titles like "Website" or "Blog" are functional but boring. Use compelling, descriptive language that tells a user exactly what they're getting. Think like a copywriter!

  • Instead of "Shop," try "Shop the New Spring Collection."
  • Instead of "Podcast," try "Listen to This Week's Episode."
  • Instead of "Form," try "Apply for 1-on-1 Coaching."

3. Always Put Your Priority Link First

The link at the very top of your Linktree will always get the most attention and the most clicks. Whatever your primary goal is right now - whether it’s selling a product, getting sign-ups, or promoting a video - that link needs to be in the number one spot.

4. Use Thumbnails and Visuals

Linktree allows you to add thumbnails (images) to your links. This is a fantastic way to make your page more visually appealing and help your links stand out. You can add a thumbnail by clicking the image icon within each link module. Use product photos, brand graphics, or even headshots to give context to each link and draw the eye where you want it to go.

5. Schedule and Highlight Links

For hyper-time-sensitive promotions, some of Linktree's paid plans offer features like scheduling and highlighting. You can set a link to automatically go live and expire at a certain time - perfect for flash sales or event registrations. You can also use highlighting features (like animations) to make a specific link pop and command extra attention.

Don't Forget to Update the Link in Your Instagram Bio!

This may sound obvious, but it’s a step people sometimes miss. Once your Linktree landing page is looking perfect, you've already put the linktr.ee/yourusername URL in your Instagram bio’s website field. It doesn’t need to be updated after you’ve first placed it. Any changes you make in the Linktree admin dashboard automatically update on the live page. So, if your link is already correctly set up in your profile, any management will be in the background within Linktree itself.

If you're setting it up for the first time or need to change it:

  1. In your Linktree dashboard, copy your unique Linktree URL (e.g., linktr.ee/yourbrand) from the top right corner.
  2. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page.
  3. Tap on ‘Edit Profile’.
  4. Paste your Linktree URL into the ‘Website’ field.
  5. Tap ‘Done’ (on iOS) or the checkmark (on Android) to save your changes.
