How to Transfer a Facebook Business Page to Someone Else

Handing over ownership of a Facebook Business Page doesn't have to be a complicated technical puzzle. Whether you've sold your business, are passing the torch to a new social media manager, or are restructuring your company's assets, the process is quite manageable once you know the steps. This guide will walk you through exactly how to transfer a Facebook Business Page to someone else, covering both the simple method for standalone pages and the more robust process using Meta Business Suite.

Understanding Page Roles and Ownership

Before you transfer anything, it’s important to understand the hierarchy of access on a Facebook Page. In the past, Facebook assigned roles like Admin, Editor, and Moderator. Today, with the "New Pages Experience," Meta has simplified this to focus on two main types of access: Facebook access with full control and Facebook access with task controls.

Think of it like being given a set of keys to a building:

  • Full Control (Admin): This is the master key. Someone with full control can do everything, including manage all settings, add and remove other people from the page, delete the page permanently, manage ad accounts, and see all insights. To transfer ownership, you must have this level of access.
  • Task Access (Editor, Moderator, etc.): These are keys to specific rooms. People with task access can be granted permissions to create content, manage messages and comments, run ads, and view performance insights. However, they cannot add or remove people or change fundamental page settings.

The goal of a transfer is to give someone else "Full Control" and, eventually, remove yourself from that role. There are two primary environments where this happens: directly on the Page's settings or through Meta Business Suite for pages connected to a Business Account.

Method 1: The Standard Transfer for a Standalone Page

This is the most common method for small business owners, freelancers, and anyone managing a single page that isn't connected to a large, overarching Meta Business Account. It's done directly from the Page's settings dashboard.

Step-by-Step Guide to Transferring a Standard Page:

1. Confirm You Have Full Control (Admin Access)

First, make sure you're an Admin. Go to your Business Page, and in the left-hand menu, click on Professional Dashboard. Then, scroll down and click on Page Access. You should see your name listed under "People with Facebook access" with the note "Full control." If you're not listed here, you don't have the necessary permissions to transfer ownership and will need to ask an existing Admin to complete these steps or grant you full control first.

2. Add the New Owner as an Admin

This is the core of the transfer process. You invite the new owner to share full control of the Page.

  • While in the Page Access menu, click the blue Add New button.
  • A pop-up will explain what granting access means. Click Next.
  • In the search bar, type the name or email address of the person you want to add. For this to work best, it's often easiest if you are already Facebook friends with the person, otherwise, you’ll have to use their exact email address associated with their Facebook account.
  • Select the correct person from the list that appears.
  • Here's the most important part: On the "What this person can manage" screen, toggle the switch for Allow this person to have full control. This gives them admin-level permissions, including the ability to remove you later.
  • Click Give Access. You'll be prompted to enter your Facebook password to confirm the security change.

At this point, an invitation has been sent to the new person. It has not been transferred yet. The transfer is not complete until they accept.

3. The New Owner Must Accept the Invitation

The person you invited needs to log into their Facebook account and will receive a notification that says, "[Your Name] has invited you to manage [Your Page Name]." They must click on this notification and accept the invitation to gain access. The invitation expires in 30 days, so remind them to accept it promptly.

4. The Grace Period: Why You Can't Be Removed Immediately

Once the new admin accepts, your work isn't quite done. For security reasons, if the user you just added is a completely new administrator, Facebook often implements a 7-day waiting period before they are allowed to perform critical actions, like removing other admins (including you). This is a fraud-prevention measure. Plan for this one-week delay in your handover timeline.

5. Removing Yourself from the Page (The Final Step)

After the grace period has passed, the ownership transfer is finalized when you remove your own access. It's a bit like handing someone the keys and then leaving the building yourself.

  • Go back to the Page Access settings.
  • You will now see yourself and the new person listed as having full control.
  • Click the three dots next to your own name.
  • Select Remove from Page.
  • Facebook will again ask for your password to confirm.

Once you confirm, you will lose all admin access to the page, and the person you added will become the new primary owner. The transfer is complete.

Method 2: Transferring a Page via Meta Business Suite

If your business Page is connected to a Meta Business Account (formerly Business Manager), the process is a bit different and, frankly, much cleaner for agencies, marketing teams, or businesses with multiple assets like ad accounts and Instagram profiles.

Here, you aren't just giving access to a page, you're giving a person access to your entire business ecosystem and then assigning specific assets (like the Page) to them.

Step-by-Step Guide for a Business Suite Transfer:

1. Invite the Person to Your Meta Business Account

First, you need to add the new owner to the Business Account that owns the Page.

  • Go to business.facebook.com and navigate to your Business Account.
  • Click the gear icon for Settings in the bottom-left corner.
  • Under "Users," click on People.
  • Click the Add People button.
  • Enter the business email address of the person you are inviting. It's best practice to use their professional email.
  • You can assign them "Employee access" (basic) or "Admin access." To truly hand over control, you'll need to give them Admin access. This acts as the master key to the whole Business Account. Toggle on the "Admin access" switch and click "Next."

2. Assign Specific Assets to the New Person

Now, you tell Facebook which specific assets inside this Business Account the new person should manage.

  • On the next screen, you’ll see a list of your assets organized by type (Pages, Ad Accounts, Catalogs, Pixels, Instagram Accounts, etc.).
  • Select your Facebook Page from the list under the "Select asset type" column.
  • A list on the right will appear showing all the different permissions for that Page.
  • Toggle on Full Control or, at the very least, select all the individual task toggles (recommended to just give Full Control).
  • Click Invite.

Just like the first method, an invitation is sent to their email. They must open the email, click the link, and follow the steps to join your Business Account and accept the permissions.

3. Change the Business Account Owner (If You're Truly Leaving)

If you have completely sold the business and want to remove yourself entirely, you'll need the new admin (once they’ve accepted) to remove you from the Business Account. Once they have admin-level access, they can go into the "People" section, click on your name, and select "Remove." This severs your connection to all assets managed by that Business Account: pages, ad accounts, pixels, and more.

Pre-Transfer Checklist: What to Do Before You Hand Over the Keys

A smooth transfer is about more than just clicking the right buttons. Prepare for the handover with this simple checklist.

  • Sign an Agreement: If the transfer is part of a business sale or client onboarding, have a signed document clearly stating who owns the page and all its related assets as of what date.
  • Backup Your Page Data: As a personal safeguard, consider downloading your page information. You can do this by going to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Your Facebook Information > Download Your Information. You can request a file of all your posts, photos, and page info.
  • Clean Up Ad Accounts: Review the payment methods on any connected ad accounts. Make sure you remove your personal or business credit cards if the new owner should be adding their own. This is a common and costly oversight.
  • Notify Your Team: If you have other people working on the page (editors, moderators), inform them of the upcoming change in ownership so they know who to report to.

Final Thoughts

Transferring a Facebook page is essentially a process of adding a new administrator and then removing the old one. Whether you do it through the direct Page Access settings for a simple setup or the more comprehensive Meta Business Suite for integrated business assets, the key is to ensure "Full Control" is properly granted before you remove yourself. Be mindful of Facebook's security delays, and you'll complete the handover smoothly.

Once you’ve successfully handled the transfer and the new team is in place, the real work of social media management begins. Managing comments across platforms, scheduling video consistently, and planning content for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts can become overwhelming, especially with tools that feel hopelessly outdated. Years ago, we got tired of struggling with schedulers built for a world of text and links, and we knew there had to be a better way for today's video-first reality. That's why we built Postbase. It's a modern social media management tool that just works, with a visual calendar to plan your strategy, rock-solid video scheduling, and a unified inbox that keeps all DMs and comments in one place. It helps you focus on creating, not wrestling with clunky software.
