How to Reshare a Highlight on Instagram

You’ve done the work, saved your best content from the fast-moving river of daily Stories, and curated them into polished Instagram Highlights. But now comes the real question: how do you get more people to actually see them after that initial push? This guide walks you through practical, effective ways you can reshare the content within your Highlights - to your Story, your feed, and even as a Reel - to give your best content the second life it deserves.

First, The Big Question: Can You Directly Reshare an Entire Highlight?

Let's get this out of the way first. Unfortunately, Instagram doesn't have a built-in "Share this Highlight" button that lets you instantly post an entire collection to your Story or feed. When you think about it, it makes sense, Highlights are collections of individual Stories, and sharing the whole bundle at once could feel like content overload for your followers. This is often the point of frustration where people give up.

But that's the wrong way to look at it. Instead of thinking about "resharing a Highlight," you should focus on re-activating the valuable content locked inside it. Your Highlights are a goldmine of pre-made, audience-approved content like tutorials, testimonials, behind-the-scenes footage, and FAQs. Learning how to tap into that archive gives you a powerful source of material you can repurpose for new audiences and new formats.

The Simplest Method: Sharing a Highlight Link via DM

While you can't blast a Highlight to all of your followers in one go, you can share a direct link to a specific Highlight via Direct Message. This is incredibly useful for one-on-one communication or for sending tailored information to specific people.

When would you use this?

  • Customer Service: Someone asks about shipping. You can send them a direct link to your "Shipping" Highlight that answers their question visually.
  • Sales &, Pitches: A potential client wants to see examples of your work. You can send them your "Portfolio" or "Results" Highlight.
  • Personal Recommendations: A friend asks for book recommendations. Send them your "Reads" Highlight with all your latest reviews.

Your Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Press and hold on the Highlight you wish to share. Don't just tap it - a long press is needed to bring up the menu.
  3. From the pop-up menu, select "Send to..."
  4. A list of your contacts will appear. Search for or select the person or group you want to share it with.
  5. You can add an optional message, then tap "Send."

This is a quick and direct way to use your Highlights, turning them into a handy resource library that you can privately share as needed.

The Classic Workaround: Resharing a Single Highlight Story to Your New Story

This is the most common and effective way to bring attention back to your Highlight content. You’re essentially plucking one specific "slide" from your Highlight collection and rebroadcasting it to your active Story, where your current followers will see it again.

It's perfect for resurfacing a single powerful testimonial, reminding people of an evergreen tip, or re-promoting a product from a past collection.

How to Pull It Off:

  1. From your profile, tap on the Highlight containing the content you want to reshare.
  2. Tap through the slides until you land on the specific photo or video you want.
  3. Look in the bottom-right corner for the "Share" icon (it looks like a paper airplane). Tap it. Note: If you don't see it, it likely means the story is too old or you used certain interactive stickers that are no longer active. In that case, jump down to the section on using your Story Archive.
  4. A new menu will appear. Tap "Add to your story."
  5. You’re now back in the familiar Instagram Story editor with your old content ready to be customized.

Don't Just Reshare It - Refresh It

This is the most important part. Don't just post the old Story as-is. Give it a new lease on life!

  • Add New Text: Overlay text that provides fresh context. Maybe you have an updated thought on the topic or want to ask a new question.
  • Use New Stickers: Add a poll, a quiz, or a question sticker to spark new engagement. People who missed it the first time have a fresh reason to interact.
  • Mention Someone: Tag an account that’s relevant to the post to bring new viewers into the conversation.
  • Context is Everything: Add a caption clarifying why you're sharing this again. Something like, "Throwback to this amazing client review!" or "Still one of my most-asked questions, so sharing this tip again!"

Turning Highlight Stories into Permanent Feed Posts

Sometimes, a piece of content is too good to stay hidden in your Highlights. A stellar review, a beautifully shot product image, or the perfect "About Me" video deserves a permanent spot on your grid. This is where your Instagram Story Archive comes in handy.

The Archive is Instagram's automatic library of all your past Stories. By default, anything you post to your Story is saved here, meaning you have a backdoor to access all the content that makes up your Highlights.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  2. Select "Archive."
  3. At the top, make sure it says "Stories Archive" (if not, tap the dropdown menu to select it).
  4. Scroll through your chronological archive to find the Story you want to turn into a post. You can also view it by location or calendar date to find it faster.
  5. Once you've found the Story, tap to open it.
  6. In the bottom-right corner, tap the "More" button (three dots).
  7. From the pop-up menu, select "Share as post..."
  8. You'll be taken to the standard Instagram post editor. Here you can crop the image, write a new caption, add relevant hashtags, tag accounts, and add a location.
  9. Hit "Share" and your old Story is now a new post on your feed.

Take It Further: Create a Carousel Post

This technique is fantastic for creating visually rich carousel posts. Got a Highlight with 5-10 fantastic user-generated photos? Go to your archive, save each one to your phone ("More" > "Save Photo"), and then upload them together as a multi-slide carousel on your feed. This turns a series of ephemeral moments into one comprehensive, high-value-feed post.

Level Up: Transforming Your Highlights into Engaging Reels

If you want to maximize the reach of your best content, converting it into an Instagram Reel is the ultimate strategy. The Reels algorithm favors engaging, short-form video, and your Highlights are likely filled with clips and images that are perfect source material.

Think about a Highlight you have called "Behind the Scenes" or "Our Process." Inside, you probably have a dozen short video clips. On their own, they were fine as Story slides, but edited together with trending music, they could become a high-performing Reel.

The Creative Process:

  1. Gather Your Media: Go to your Story Archive as described in the previous section. Find the video clips and photos you want to use. Instead of sharing them as a post, tap "More" and then "Save video" or "Save photo." Do this for all the clips you want to include.
  2. Open the Reels Editor: Go back to your profile and tap the "+" icon, then select "Reel."
  3. Stitch Your Clips Together: Upload the videos and photos you just saved from your camera roll. Trim them, change their order, and edit them to tell a quick, compelling story.
  4. Add the Reels Magic: This is what separates a repurposed clip from a true Reel.
    • Add Trending Audio: Find a soundtrack that fits the vibe. This is one of the most powerful ways to get your Reel seen by new audiences.
    • Use Text Overlays: Add on-screen text to guide the viewer, much like subtitles or headlines.
    • Speed It Up: Speed up your process videos to create a satisfying hyper-lapse effect.
  5. Write a New Caption and Add Hashtags: Craft a caption specifically for a Reels audience and include relevant hashtags to improve discoverability.

Final Thoughts

While you can’t press a single button to "reshare" an entire Instagram Highlight, the options for reviving the individual photos and videos within it are incredibly powerful. Whether it's adding an old Story back to your daily feed, turning a stellar review into a permanent grid post, or editing your best clips into a dynamic Reel, you have endless opportunities to make your great content work harder for you.

Consistently repurposing your best content helps present a cohesive brand story without constantly having to reinvent the wheel. Often, this requires a bit of forward planning, which is where we've found that a simple-to-use visual calendar makes a world of difference. At Postbase, we plan this kind of repurposed content right alongside our new posts, allowing us to see exactly when that powerful testimonial from a Highlight will become a feed post or when an old tutorial is scheduled to be re-edited into a Reel. This small step helps us keep our content strategy organized and ensures our best assets are always cycling back into view.
