How to Repost on Threads

Sharing someone else's content on Threads is a fantastic way to engage with your community, curate valuable information, and keep your profile active. This guide breaks down the two distinct methods for sharing - 'Repost' and 'Quote' - and gives you a strategic look at how and when you should use each one.

Repost vs. Quote: What's the Difference?

Before jumping into the "how," it's helpful to understand the two options Threads gives you for sharing content. While they both get a post in front of your audience, they serve very different purposes. Think of it like shouting a simple "I agree!" from the crowd versus stepping on stage to add your own two cents.

What is a Repost?

A Repost is the simplest way to share. It's a direct, one-click share of someone else's original thread to your own profile. When you repost something, it appears on your profile and in your followers' feeds exactly as it was originally written, with a small note above it that says "Reposted by you."

There's no room for your own commentary, you are simply amplifying the original message. It’s the digital equivalent of a high-five or a supportive nod.

What is a Quote?

A Quote (also known as a quote post) allows you to share someone else's thread while adding your own thoughts. When you use the quote feature, Threads opens a new post composer for you. The original post is embedded as a neat, clickable block at the bottom, and you have the entire space above it to add your own text, photos, videos, GIFs, or even a poll.

This method is powerful because it transforms a simple share into a new piece of content that starts a conversation or provides valuable context for your audience.

How to Repost on Threads: The Quick Amplification

Ready to share a great post without any extra commentary? The 'Repost' function is your best friend. It’s quick, a little addictive, and a perfect way to show support or share information in seconds.

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Find a Thread You Want to Share: Scroll through your feed or a specific profile until you land on a post you'd like your followers to see.
  2. Tap the Repost Icon: Beneath every thread, you'll see a row of four icons: a heart (like), a speech bubble (reply), two circling arrows (repost), and a paper airplane (share). Tap the repost icon (the circling arrows).
  3. Select 'Repost': A small menu will pop up at the bottom of your screen giving you two options: "Repost" and "Quote." Tap Repost.
  4. That's It! The post will instantly be shared with your followers and added to the "Reposts" tab on your profile. A small notification will confirm "Post reposted."

You can also undo a repost. Just navigate back to the original post (or find it on your profile), tap the repost icon again, and select “Remove repost.”

How to Repost with a Comment: The 'Quote' Method

When you have something to add to the conversation, the 'Quote' function is the way to go. This is how you can add your unique perspective, disagree respectfully, or provide necessary context.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Find the Target Thread: Locate the post you want to use as a starting point for your own.
  2. Tap the Repost Icon: Just like before, tap the two circling arrows icon below the post content.
  3. Select 'Quote': From the pop-up menu at the bottom, this time choose Quote.
  4. Compose Your Post: You’ll be taken to a new post creation screen. The original thread will appear as a self-contained block at the bottom. The cursor will be blinking in the space above it, ready for your input.
  5. Add Your Value: This is your moment. Write your comment, ask a question for your audience, share a related statistic, or even add a GIF that perfectly captures your reaction. You have the full 500-character count to work with.
  6. Publish Your Quote Post: Once you’re happy with your addition, tap the Post button in the bottom-right corner. Your new post - your commentary plus the original thread - is now live on your profile.

When to Repost vs. When to Quote: A Strategic Guide

Knowing how to repost is only half the battle. Knowing when to use each function transforms your profile from a simple aggregator into a thoughtful, engaging presence. Here’s a strategic breakdown for different goals.

Use 'Repost' When You Want To:

  • Quickly Amplify a Message: For breaking news, updates from other accounts, or a fantastic piece of content that stands on its own, a simple repost is often the most effective. Your goal is simply to get more eyeballs on the original post.
  • Show Direct Support: Reposting someone’s work is a direct and public endorsement. It signals that you agree with their message and support their voice. It's a genuine way to build community goodwill without saying a word.
  • Curate Content Effortlessly: If part of your strategy involves being a go-to source for industry information, reposting is an efficient way to populate your feed with relevant, high-quality content. It positions you as a valuable curator who keeps tabs on what’s important.
  • Participate in a Trend or Meme: Sometimes, a creative or funny post is perfect as-is. Reposting it lets you join the fun with a single tap.

Use 'Quote' When You Want To:

  • Add Your Unique Perspective: This is the most common reason to quote. Share the original post and overlay your own analysis, opinion, or takeaway. This adds value for your followers, as they get another layer of insight they wouldn't get from a simple repost.
  • Start a Community Discussion: Share a thought-provoking post and ask your audience a direct question about it. For example: “This is a fascinating take on remote work. What does your company do differently?” This actively invites engagement and turns passive scrolling into an active conversation.
  • Provide Important Context: Sometimes an original post lacks context for your specific audience. Quoting lets you bridge that gap. For example: “For my followers in the Saas world, this marketing advice is particularly useful because of X.”
  • Highlight and Emphasize: Use your quote post to pull out a single powerful statistic or sentence from the original post that you believe deserves extra attention. This guides your followers’ focus to the most critical part of the message.
  • Disagree Respectfully: If you disagree with a post, quoting it is the correct way to present your counter-argument. It provides the full context of the original take and allows you to build your response clearly and transparently.

More Ways to Share Threads: To Instagram and Beyond

Threads is deeply integrated with Instagram, which opens up more ways to share content cross-platform.

How to Share a Thread to Your Instagram Story

Spotted a thread that would be perfect for your Instagram audience? You can share it directly to your Story while maintaining a clean, professional look and clear attribution.

  1. Tap the paper airplane icon below the thread you wish to share.
  2. From the share menu, select Add to story.
  3. Instagram will open automatically, with the thread perfectly formatted as a Story sticker.
  4. You can pinch to resize the sticker, move it around, and add other elements like text, GIFs, or polls before publishing. When people view your Story, they can tap the sticker to be taken directly to the thread.

This is the best way to share threads on Instagram, as it properly credits the original author and encourages your followers to engage with your Threads profile.

Posting to Other Platforms

From that same share menu (the paper airplane icon), you can also get a link to the thread ('Copy link') or share it to other apps like X or a messaging app ('Share via...').

A note on screenshots: While you can always screenshot a thread and post it elsewhere, the best practice is to always give explicit credit by tagging the user’s handle in your post. Never pass off someone else’s content as your own.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the difference between 'Repost' and 'Quote' on Threads allows you to be much more intentional with your content strategy. One lets you amplify, the other lets you add your voice, and both are essential tools for building a dynamic, engaged following on the platform.
