How to Merge Two Facebook Business Accounts

Managing two different Facebook business pages for the same company is a cleanup project you don't need on your to-do list, yet it happens all the time. This guide will walk you through the exact steps to merge those duplicate Facebook Pages, combining your followers and check-ins into one authoritative Page so you can focus on what matters: growing your business.

Why Bother Merging Facebook Pages?

If you're reading this, you probably already feel the headache of managing duplicate Facebook business pages. Maybe an old page was created by a former employee, or perhaps customers kept checking in to a location that automatically generated a separate, unofficial "place" page. Whatever the reason, leaving them unchecked causes real problems.

  • It Divides Your Audience and Social Proof: When followers, reviews, and check-ins are split between two pages, your brand looks less established than it actually is. Combining them gathers all that hard-earned engagement in one spot, creating a much stronger first impression for new visitors.
  • It Confuses Your Customers: Someone searching for your business might find the wrong page - one that's outdated, unmonitored, or has incorrect information. This can lead to missed messages, frustrated customers, and lost sales. A single page becomes the official source of truth.
  • It Weakens Your Brand Consistency: Managing two pages means trying to keep branding, voice, and information consistent across both. It adds complexity to your workflow and opens the door for inconsistencies that can dilute your brand message.
  • It Doubles Your Workload: Why post content, run ads, and respond to comments in two places when you can do it once? Merging simplifies your social media management instantly, freeing up valuable time.

Ultimately, merging combines your audience into a single, stronger community and streamlines your operations. It’s a bit of administrative work upfront that pays off significantly in the long run.

Before You Start: Your Pre-Merge Checklist

Hold on - don't rush straight to the merge button. Facebook’s process is permanent, and if you aren’t prepared, it will fail or you might merge the wrong pages. Go through this checklist carefully to make sure the process is smooth and successful. A few minutes of prep now will save you a major headache later.

1. Confirm You have Admin Access on Both Pages

This is the most important prerequisite. You must have full admin privileges for both the page you want to keep and the page you want to merge (and get rid of). Not an editor, not a moderator - an Admin. If you aren't, you need to get access before you can do anything else.

How to Check Your Role:

  1. Go to the Page you want to check.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click "Professional dashboard."
  3. Under "Your tools", click "Page Access."
  4. You'll see a list of people with access. Make sure your name is listed under "People with Facebook access" and that your permissions include full control. Repeat for the second page.

If you need to gain access, you'll need the current page admin to grant it to you.

2. Line Up the Page Names and Categories

For Facebook to approve a merge, the two pages must represent the same entity. This means their names should be very similar, if not identical.

  • Example of Good Names: "Jen’s Coffee House" and "Jen’s Coffee House Downtown" are similar enough to likely be approved.
  • Example of Bad Names: "Jen’s Coffee" and "The Best Desserts in Seattle" are too different and will be rejected.

If the names are too different, you'll need to change one to match the other. Our advice: Change the name of the page you do not plan to keep. Let's say you plan to keep "Jen's Coffee House" because it has more followers. You would submit a name change for the second page to make it more similar, like "Jen's Coffee House - Old Location."

Additionally, make sure the Business Category for both pages is exactly the same (e.g., both are listed as "Coffee Shop"). You can edit this in the "Edit Page Info" section.

3. Choose Which Page You'll Keep

This is a big decision because all posts, photos, and videos from the page you discard will be permanently deleted. Only the check-ins and the followers (likes) are moved over to the page you keep. The username (and vanity URL) of the losing page is also released.

So, which page should be the winner?

  • Page to Keep (Destination): This should be the page with the stronger follower base, the better username/URL, the most complete information, or the content history you want to preserve.
  • Page to Merge (Source): This is the page whose audience you want to absorb. All its content will be erased.

Carefully review both pages and decide which one serves as the better foundation for your brand moving forward.

4. Check and Match Physical Addresses

If your pages have a physical address listed (common for local businesses, restaurants, or stores), Facebook requires them to match an exact match before it will even consider the merge. Go into the "About" section of each page and update the address so they are identical, right down to the zip code.

If one page doesn't have an address and the other does, that’s usually okay. The problem comes when both pages claim a physical location, but the addresses don't match.

5. Back Up Content from the Merged Page (Optional)

Since the page you merge away will be deleted along with all its content, you may want to download a backup of its photos, videos, and posts for your records. Think of it as a safety net. You probably won't need it, but it's comforting to have. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Download Page.

The Step-by-Step Guide to Merging Your Facebook Pages

Once you’ve completed the pre-merge checklist, the actual merging process is surprisingly straightforward. It typically only takes a few minutes to submit the request.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go Directly to Facebook's Merge Tool: The easiest way to get there is by navigating to www.facebook.com/pages/merge. You’ll need to be logged into the Facebook profile that is an admin of both pages.
  2. Select Your Source and Destination Pages: You will see two dropdown menus.
    • In the first menu, select the "Source Page." This is the duplicate page you want to merge from - the one that will be deleted.
    • In the second menu, select the "Destination Page." This is the official page you want to keep.
Double-check your choices here. Getting this backward would be a disaster, as you’d be deleting your main page!
  3. Confirm Your Request: After selecting both pages, click "Continue." Facebook will show you a final confirmation detailing what will happen. It will remind you that the content from the source page will be deleted. Review it one last time to make sure everything is correct.
  4. Submit the Merge Request: If everything looks good, click "Request Merge." The request is now sent to Facebook for review.

What Happens Next?

Don't expect the merge to happen instantly. The approval process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Facebook shows an "in review" notice while it's processing. Once it is approved, Facebook will notify you.

If your merge is rejected, it's almost always because one of the items on the pre-merge checklist wasn't met. The most common reasons are that the names are too different or that you don't have full admin rights. Revisit the checklist, make the necessary corrections, and try submitting the request again.

After the Merge: Your Post-Merge Action Plan

Congratulations, your pages have successfully merged! You now have one unified Facebook Page. But you aren’t quite done yet. Here are a few simple steps to take to ensure a smooth transition for your audience.

  • Review Your Newly Merged Page: Take a look at your page. You should see that your follower count has increased, reflecting the combined audience. Check the "About" section and other details to make sure all the correct information carried over.
  • Update Links and Marketing Materials: Your old page's URL no longer works. It is pointing to the primary one. Make sure you update the Facebook link on your website, in your email signatures, on other social media profiles, and on any printed materials like business cards or brochures.
  • Announce the Change (Recommended): It's a great idea to make a quick announcement post. Something friendly and simple works best: "Exciting news! We've tidied up our social media presence and have merged our duplicate Facebook Pages. This is now our one-and-only official home on Facebook. Welcome to our new followers who came over in the merge - we're so glad you're here!" This helps prevent confusion and makes everyone feel welcome.
  • Check Your Ad Campaigns: If you were running any ads connected to the now-deleted page, you'll need to make sure your Facebook Ads Manager is now configured to run all promotions through your official, merged Page.
