How to Leave a Facebook Page as Admin

Removing yourself as an admin from a Facebook Page should be a simple click, but platform updates and hidden settings can make it feel like a puzzle. Whether you're handing over the reins, finishing a project, or simply cleaning up your profile's access, this guide will walk you through the process, step-by-step. We'll cover how to leave a Page on both desktop and mobile and go over the important things to check before you hit that final confirmation button.

Before You Leave: 3 Critical Things to Check

Stepping down as an admin is permanent - at least until someone invites you back. Before you make the move, running through this quick checklist can save you from accidentally locking everyone out or losing important assets.

1. Make Sure There's Another Admin

This is the most important rule: a Facebook Page must always have at least one person with full Admin-level access. If you are the only admin on the Page, Facebook will not give you the option to remove yourself. The "Remove" button will either be grayed out or simply won't appear.

If you're the last admin standing, you have two choices:

  • Assign a New Admin: Invite another person to become an admin. Once they accept the invitation, you will then be able to remove yourself. To do this, go to your Page's professional dashboard, find "Page Access" in the menu, and add a new person with "Full control."
  • Delete the Page: If the Page is no longer needed and you are the only one managing it, your other option is to permanently delete it. Be certain before you do this, as deletion is irreversible after a 30-day grace period.

2. Understand What Access You're Losing

When you remove yourself as a Page Admin, you're not just giving up the ability to post. You lose access to everything. This includes:

  • Publishing content, commenting, or sending messages as the Page
  • Viewing Page Insights and analytics
  • Creating or managing ads for the Page
  • Linking and unlinking Instagram accounts
  • Managing Page settings and other roles
  • Viewing comment moderation history or activity logs

If you still need to perform some tasks like posting content or running ads - but without full control - ask the remaining Page Admin to re-invite you with a different role, like Editor or Moderator.

3. Clarify Page Ownership in Meta Business Suite

If the Page is connected to a Meta Business Suite (formerly Business Manager), things can be a bit more complex. Sometimes, simply removing yourself from the Page isn't enough, you might also need to be removed from the Business Suite itself, especially if your personal profile "owns" the Page within that business portfolio.

If you're part of a company or agency, confirm with a team member who has admin access to the Business Suite that they can remove you from the business assets. This ensures a clean break and prevents any lingering access issues down the road. For most casual users, this won't be an issue, but for marketers and business owners, it's a vital step.

How to Leave a Facebook Page as Admin: A Step-by-Step Guide

Facebook has unified its interface across devices, so the steps are quite similar whether you’re on a laptop or your phone. We’ll cover both, focusing on the current "New Pages Experience."

Method 1: Using a Desktop Computer

Using a laptop or desktop computer is often the easiest way to manage your Page settings. Here’s how to do it in just a few clicks.

  1. Switch to the Page Profile: Open Facebook and click on your profile picture in the top-right corner. In the dropdown menu, select "See all profiles" and choose the Page you want to leave. You are now acting as the Page.
  2. Go to Settings: Once you're managing the Page, click its profile picture in the top-right corner again. From this menu, select Settings & Privacy, and then click Settings.
  3. Find Page Access: In the left-hand settings menu, click on New Pages Experience. This will open up several options, choose Page Access.
  4. Locate Your Profile: You will see a list of "People with Facebook access." Find your own name and profile picture in this list.
  5. Remove Your Access: To the right of your name, click the three-dot icon (...). A single option will appear: Remove access. Click it.
  6. Confirm Your Decision: A popup will appear asking you to confirm by entering your personal Facebook password. This is a security measure to ensure no one else is removing you from the Page. Enter your password and click Confirm.

That's it. You will immediately be removed as an admin and lose all management privileges for that Page.

Method 2: Using the Facebook Mobile App (iOS or Android)

If you prefer to manage things on the go, you can easily remove yourself using the Facebook app on your phone. The steps are nearly identical for both iPhone and Android users.

  1. Switch to the Page Profile: Open your Facebook app. Tap your profile picture or the menu icon (☰) in the bottom-right (iOS) or top-right (Android). Next, tap the dropdown arrow next to your name to see your profiles and Pages. Select the Page you wish to leave.
  2. Access the Settings Menu: Once you're switched to the Page's profile, tap the menu icon (your Page's profile picture or ☰) again.
  3. Go to Page Settings: Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings. From the next screen, tap Page Settings at the top.
  4. Find Page Access settings: On the Page Settings screen, scroll down until you see the New Pages Experience section. Tap on Page Access.
  5. Locate and Remove Yourself: You'll see the list of people with access. Find your name and tap the three-dot icon (...) next to it. Select Remove from Page.
  6. Enter Your Password to Confirm: Just like on a desktop, you’ll be prompted to enter your personal Facebook password to finalize the removal. Enter it and tap Confirm.

You have now successfully left the Page and will no longer have admin rights.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Sometimes things don't go as planned. Here are a couple of common roadblocks and how to get past them.

"I can't see the 'Remove' option or it's grayed out."

This almost always means you are the only admin on the Page. As mentioned earlier, Facebook requires at least one admin to be in charge at all times. You must first add a new admin and wait for them to accept the invitation before you are able to remove yourself.

"I removed myself but I can still see updates from the Page."

Removing yourself as an admin does not automatically unlike or unfollow the Page. If you don’t want to see the Page’s content in your news feed, you'll need to visit the Page from your personal profile and manually click the "Unlike" or "Unfollow" button.

"Someone else left, and now I'm the only admin. What do I do?"

If you’ve inherited a Page and don't want to manage it alone, your priority should be to invite another trusted person to become an admin alongside you. This provides a backup in case you lose access to your own account and ensures the page has an active manager. It’s always better to have at least two admins for any serious business or community page.

Final Thoughts

Leaving a Facebook Page as an admin is a straightforward process when you know where to look. The most critical step is ensuring another admin is in place to manage the page after you depart, preventing you from accidentally orphaning the account.
