How to Layer Photos on Instagram Story

By Spencer Lanoue

Layering photos on your Instagram Story lets you ditch the basic one-photo-per-slide format and create a dynamic, magazine-style collage right inside the app. This guide will walk you through three different methods, from a quick copy-and-paste trick to using design apps for a more polished look. We’ll also cover some creative ideas to help you get started.

Why Bother Layering Photos in Your Stories?

Before getting into the "how," let's quickly touch on the "why." A single image is fine, but a layered design can immediately elevate your content. It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about better storytelling. You can compare products, create visually rich mood boards, show off different angles of an item, or simply share a "photo dump" from your weekend in one cohesive slide.

Layering creates visual interest, making your Stories feel more intentional and professionally designed. This helps grab and hold your audience's attention, stopping them from mindlessly tapping through to the next person’s content. It’s a simple technique that communicates effort and creativity, helping your brand or personal profile stand out in a sea of similar content.

Method 1: The Go-To "Copy & Paste" Trick

The copy-and-paste method is probably the fastest way to add a picture on top of another on Instagram Story. It uses your phone's native clipboard functionality, but the steps are slightly different for iPhone and Android users.

For iPhone Users:

The process on an iPhone is incredibly direct, thanks to iOS's built-in "Copy Photo" feature. It only takes a few seconds to execute once you know the steps.

  • Step 1: Set Your Background. Open Instagram, swipe to create a Story, and choose your background. This can be a photo or video from your camera roll, or you can create a simple solid color background using the "Create" mode.
  • Step 2: Find Your Second Photo. Without closing Instagram, navigate to your phone's Photos app. Open the image you want to use as your top layer.
  • Step 3: Copy the Photo. Tap the "Share" icon (the box with an arrow pointing up) in the bottom-left corner. In the share menu, scroll down and select "Copy Photo." The image is now saved to your clipboard.
  • Step 4: Paste it into Your Story. Go back to the Instagram app. Your Story draft should still be open. Two things might happen here: either an "Add sticker" pop-up of the copied image will appear a moment later, or you'll have to do it manually. If the pop-up shows up, just tap it. If not, open the text tool (by tapping "Aa"), then tap and hold on the screen until the "Paste" option appears. Tap paste.
  • Step 5: Adjust and Repeat. Your copied photo will now appear on your Story! You can drag it around, pinch to resize it, and rotate it. To add more photos, simply repeat steps 2-4 for each new image.

For Android Users:

Android doesn’t have a universal "Copy Photo" feature in the same way, but most popular keyboard apps offer a workaround through their clipboard function. We'll use Google's Gboard as the primary example, as it's one of the most common.

Quick prerequisite: Make sure Gboard is installed and set as your default keyboard. Within Gboard settings, you'll need to enable the "Clipboard" feature.

  • Step 1: Save Photos to Your Keyboard's Clipboard. The first step is to get the image onto your keyboard's clipboard. Open the photo in your gallery or Google Photos, tap the "Share" icon, and find an option to "Copy to clipboard." If that option isn't available, an easier workaround is to use a messaging app - open a chat with yourself on WhatsApp or your default messaging app, attach the photo, but instead of sending it, copy the image from the message input box.
  • Step 2: Set Your Background in Instagram. Open your Instagram Story and set up your background photo, video, or solid color, just as you would for an iPhone.
  • Step 3: Access Your Keyboard. Tap the text tool ("Aa") to bring up your keyboard.
  • Step 4: Open the Clipboard and Add Your Photo. On the Gboard toolbar (the strip of icons above the letters), tap the clipboard icon. You should see the recent image you copied there. Tap on it, and it will be added to your Story.
  • Step 5: Edit and Position. Just like on an iPhone, you can now pinch, drag, and rotate your new photo layer.

While a bit less direct than the iOS method, this is a reliable way for Android users to get the same layered effect without leaving the app for too long.

Method 2: Using Instagram's Native "Add from Camera Roll" Sticker

If you prefer to stay entirely within the Instagram ecosystem, the app has its own built-in feature for layering photos. It’s simple, effective, and works identically on both iPhone and Android.

  • Step 1: Start Your Story. Open the story editor and either take a new photo, upload one from your library for the background, or use the "Create" mode for a solid color.
  • Step 2: Open the Sticker Tray. Tap the sticker icon (the square smiley face) at the top of the screen. This is where you find polls, questions, GIFs, and other interactive elements.
  • Step 3: Find the Photo Sticker. Scroll through the stickers until you find one with a circular icon displaying a preview of your most recent photo from your camera roll. It might also have a small mountain-and-sun logo. Tap it.
  • Step 4: Select Your Photo. This will open your photo library. Choose the image you want to place on top.
  • Step 5: Customize and Position. The selected photo will now appear on your story. You can move and resize it as you wish. Here's an extra tip: try tapping on the photo sticker after you've placed it. Instagram will toggle it through different shapes, like a circle, star, heart, or rectangle with rounded corners.
  • Step 6: Repeat for Multiple Photos. To add more photos, just go back into the sticker tray and repeat the process. There's no limit to how many you can add, so you can build out a full collage one sticker at a time.

This method is perfect for beginners and for when you want to quickly add a few snaps on top of a main image.

Method 3: Create Polished Designs with Third-Party Apps

For those times when you need more control, want to use specific branded templates, or are aiming for a highly polished, professional aesthetic, third-party design apps are your best friend. Apps like Canva, Unfold, Mojo, or Adobe Express are built for this precise purpose.

This method shifts the work from happening inside Instagram to happening in advance. Instead of layering photos within the Story editor, you create a single, complete image file (or video) that has all your visuals already perfectly arranged.

The General Workflow:

  1. Choose Your App and Template: Open your app of choice (Canva is a great, free-to-start option). Find their "Instagram Story" templates and choose one that fits the layout you want.
  2. Upload and Arrange Your Photos: Upload your background and layer photos into the app. Drag them into the template's designated placeholders. Here, you have precise control over size, positioning, alignment, and even adding drop shadows or borders.
  3. Add Other Design Elements: This is where these apps shine. You can add branded fonts, logos, animated graphics, and other elements that aren't available within Instagram.
  4. Save Your Design: Once you’re happy with the layout, export the final design as a high-resolution image (PNG or JPG) or a video file (MP4) to your phone's camera roll.
  5. Upload to Your Instagram Story: Now, go back to Instagram. When creating a Story, simply upload this one finished design from your camera roll. It will appear perfectly formatted as a single, seamless slide.

This approach is ideal for businesses showcasing products, influencers creating sponsored content, or anyone who wants their Stories to have a cohesive and branded feel.

Creative Ideas for Layered Stories

Now that you know how to do it, what can you make? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Digital Mood Board: Use a solid color or a subtle texture as a background. Add several photos that fit a certain aesthetic, color scheme, or theme. This is great for brands showcasing their visual identity or for creators sharing inspiration.
  • Product Showcase: Use a high-quality lifestyle shot of your product in use as the background. Then, use the sticker method to layer smaller photos on top showing specific product details, different color options, or ingredients.
  • Before and After Reveal: Create a compelling transformation by layering the "before" and "after" photos side-by-side or slightly overlapping. This works well for fitness, beauty, home renovation, or design niches.
  • The Photo-in-a-Photo Look: Take a photo of your desk, notebook, or a scenic view. Then, use the sticker or copy-paste method to add a "Polaroid" style photo on top, making it look as though a physical photo is lying on the surface.
  • Step-by-Step Tutorial: Layer numbered photos to guide your followers through a simple process, like a recipe, a DIY craft, or a makeup tutorial. Use Instagram's pen tool to write numbers or draw arrows connecting each step.
