How to Give a Facebook Page to Someone Else

Handing over the keys to a Facebook Page you've built is a big step, but the process itself is surprisingly straightforward. Whether you’re selling your business, passing duties to a new team member, or bringing on an agency, transferring control doesn't have to come with great confusion. This guide breaks down exactly how to give someone access to your Facebook Page, transfer full ownership, and do it safely and efficiently.

First, Understand What You're Handing Over: Facebook Page Roles Explained

Before you make someone an admin, it’s important to understand the different levels of access you can grant. Giving someone full admin control is like handing them a master key - they can do everything you can, including removing you from the Page. In many cases, a less powerful role is all that's needed.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the most common roles, from most powerful to least:

  • Admin: Has complete control. Can manage all Page settings, roles, permissions, content, messages, comments, ads, and insights. Admins can add or remove anyone from the Page, including other admins. This is the role needed to transfer full ownership.
  • Editor: Can do everything an Admin can except manage Page roles and settings. They can post content, send messages as the Page, respond to comments, create ads, and view insights. This is a great role for a social media manager or a content creator who needs to manage day-to-day operations without having control over who runs the Page.
  • Moderator: The community management specialist. A Moderator can send messages as the Page, respond to and delete comments, remove and ban people, and create ads. However, they cannot create or publish content as the Page. This is ideal for someone hired to strictly manage audience engagement.
  • Advertiser: Can only create ads, view insights, and see who published as the page. They cannot post organic content, comment, or manage messages. This is perfect for a media buyer or an ad agency that only needs to handle your paid campaigns.
  • Analyst: A view-only role. An Analyst can see which admins published which posts and can view Page performance through Facebook Insights. They have no publishing or engagement capabilities whatsoever. This role is great for stakeholders or data analysts who just need to track performance.

For the purpose of giving your Page to someone else - truly handing it off - you’ll be granting them Admin access. If you're just delegating tasks, consider an Editor or another role first.

The A-B Test: Classic Pages vs. the New Pages Experience

Facebook has been transitioning from its "Classic" Page layout to the "New Pages Experience" for some time now. How you grant access depends heavily on which version you have, as the menus and workflows are totally different. Thankfully, figuring out which one you're using is easy.

Is Your Page Classic or New? The easiest way to tell is by looking. Classic Pages feel like a beefed-up personal profile with a distinct left-hand menu for settings. The New Pages Experience acts more like a separate profile you "switch into," with a professional dashboard and a feed just for that Page.

Don't worry, we'll cover both scenarios step by step.

How to Add an Admin to a Classic Facebook Page

If you're still using the classic layout, the process is likely what you remember from years past. It's all managed through a simple "Page Roles" menu.

1. Go to Your Page and Find "Settings": Navigate to the Facebook Page you want to manage. In the left-hand navigation menu, scroll down to the bottom and click on Settings.

2. Open "Page Roles": Within the Settings menu, find and click on Page Roles. This will also be located in the left-hand column inside the Settings panel.

3. Assign a New Page Role: Look for the section labeled "Assign a New Page Role." You’ll see a box where you can type a name or an email address. Start typing the name of the Facebook friend you want to add. Their profile should appear in a dropdown menu. If they aren't your friend on Facebook, you will need to use the email address associated with their Facebook account.

4. Select the "Admin" Role: To the right of the name/email box, there's a dropdown menu that usually defaults to "Editor." Click on it and select Admin from the list. It's wise to double-check that you've selected the correct person's profile before moving forward.

5. Click "Add" and Confirm with Your Password: Click the blue "Add" button. As a security measure, Facebook will prompt you to re-enter your personal profile password to confirm that you authorize this change. Enter your password and click "Submit."

6. The Person Must Accept the Invitation: The person you invited will receive a notification to become an Admin of your Page. The role will be listed as "Pending" in your Page Roles settings until they accept it. Make sure you let them know to look for this notification so they can finalize the process.

How to Grant Access on the New Pages Experience

The "New Pages Experience" treats your page more like a standalone profile. You manage access in a more streamlined way, similar to how access is managed in Meta Business Suite.

1. Switch into Your Page Profile: To manage your Page, you first need to switch from your personal profile to "acting" as your Page. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of Facebook, then click "See all profiles" and select the Page you want to manage.

2. Navigate to the Page Dashboard: Once you are viewing Facebook as your Page, click your Page’s profile picture in the top right, then select Settings & Privacy > Settings. Alternatively, from your Page's main view, you can click "Manage." This takes you to your Page's professional dashboard.

3. Select "Page Access": In the dashboard's left-hand menu, click on Page Access. You may find this under the "New Pages Experience" section or listed under “Your tools.” It is typically one of the top options.

4. Add the New Person: In the "People with Facebook access" section, click the Add New button.

5. Search for the User: A pop-up will appear. Start typing the name of the person you want to add access for and select their profile from the search results that appear.

6. Choose the Level of Access: Now you’ll see a screen explaining permissions. You can either grant them partial access with specific task permissions, or you can grant full control. To give full ownership, you must toggle the option that says, "Allow this person to have full control." This is the equivalent of an Admin role. Review the permissions they will receive and click "Give Access."

7. Confirm with Your Password: Just like with Classic Pages, Facebook will ask you to enter your personal profile password to confirm this significant change.

8. Wait for Acceptance: The person invited will receive a notification to manage the Page. Their invitation is good for 31 days. Once they accept, they will appear in your "Page Access" list with full control.

Beyond Just Adding an Admin: How to Transfer Full Ownership

Granting someone Admin access is step one. But a true "transfer of ownership" means you, the original creator or owner, eventually remove yourself from the Page. This is the final step in handing off the business or asset entirely.

Important Note: There's a Waiting Period. For security reasons, a new Admin must wait 7 days after being added before they can remove any other Admins, including the one who added them.

Here’s the complete process for a full ownership transfer:

  1. Add the new owner as an Admin using the steps outlined above.
  2. Wait for them to accept the invitation.
  3. Wait for a full 7 days to pass. If you try to remove yourself or have them remove you before this period is over, Facebook will block the action.
  4. After the 7 days are up, the new Admin can remove you from the Page by going to the "Page Roles" (Classic) or "Page Access" (New) settings, finding your name in the list of Admins, and selecting "Remove."
  5. Alternatively, after the 7 days, you can remove yourself using the same process.

Once you are removed, you will no longer have any access or control over the Page. The transfer is complete.

A Note on Meta Business Suite and Business Manager

If your Page is connected to a Meta Business Manager (also known as a Business Portfolio), ownership is a bit more complicated. In this scenario, the Business Manager, not an individual person, is the technical "owner" of the page. Transferring ownership means moving the Page from your Business Manager to theirs.

  • The new owner's business would need to request access to your Page within their own Business Manager.
  • You, as the Page admin and owner in your Business Manager, would then approve their request.
  • Full ownership is transferred when you completely remove the Page from your original Business Manager.

This method is more common for agencies and larger businesses and provides another layer of security, as ownership lies with an organization's account rather than a single person's profile.

Smart and Safe: Best Practices for a Smooth Handover

Transferring a brand asset is serious business. Keep these tips in mind to make the transition seamless and secure.

  • Communicate Clearly: Let the recipient know you are sending an invitation. It can sometimes get lost in their notifications.
  • Verify the Person: Especially if you are not Facebook friends, make sure you are sending the invite to the correct person. Double-check profile pictures and spellings to avoid adding a stranger.
  • Consider a Trial Period: If you're hiring a new social media manager, consider starting them as an Editor or Moderator for a few weeks before granting full Admin control. This lets you observe their work without risking your Page's security.
  • Clean Up Old Access: Before or after the transfer, it's good practice to audit who has access to your Page. Remove any former employees, agencies, or partners who no longer need access from the Page Roles/Access list. Keep your circle of trust as small as necessary.

Final Thoughts

Transferring a Facebook Page comes down to understanding the different levels of control and carefully following the correct steps for your Page version. By choosing the right role and allowing for Facebook’s security waiting periods, you can ensure a clean and secure handover every time, giving both you and the new owner confidence in the process.
