How to Enable the Share Button on a Facebook Post

Ever feel like you've created the perfect Facebook post, only to realize the Share button is mysteriously missing? You're not alone. This guide walks you through exactly why that happens and provides simple, step-by-step instructions to enable sharing on your personal profile, Business Page, and even explains how it works in Groups.

Why Does the Share Button Disappear on Facebook?

The absence of a share button on your Facebook post isn't a glitch, it's almost always a matter of privacy settings. Facebook gives you detailed control over who can see what you post. The Share button is directly tied to a post's visibility. If a post isn't meant for the public, Facebook won't allow it to be shared publicly.

Think of it this way: if you share a family photo and set the audience to "Friends," you're specifically telling Facebook that only your friends should see it. Allowing one of those friends to then share it publicly would break the privacy setting you originally chose. To make a post shareable, you need to tell Facebook it's okay for anyone and everyone to see it. This is done by setting the audience to Public.

For brands and creators, having a visible share button is non-negotiable. Sharing is the engine of organic growth. Every time a follower shares your post, they vouch for your content and expose it to their entire network. It's free advertising, an organic endorsement, and a powerful way to expand your reach far beyond your initial followers. Let's make sure it's turned on.

How to Enable the Share Button on a Personal Facebook Profile

For personal profiles, you control the visibility of every single post. You can either set a default audience for all future posts or change the audience for a post that's already live.

Step 1: Set Your Default Post Audience to Public

If you want all your future posts to be shareable by default, you need to change your main privacy setting. This is a good idea if you use your personal profile for professional networking, promoting your business, or building a personal brand.

  • Navigate to Settings: On your computer or in the mobile app, click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select "Settings &, Privacy," then click "Settings."
  • Find Audience Settings: In the left-hand menu, look for the "Audience and Visibility" section. Click on "Posts."
  • Change Default Audience: Here, you'll see an option called "Who can see your future posts?". If it says "Friends" or "Friends except…," click "Edit."
  • Select "Public": From the dropdown menu, choose Public. A pop-up may ask you to confirm.

From now on, anything you post will be public by default and will have the Share button enabled for everyone. Remember, you can still change the audience for any individual post right before you hit "Post" if you want to share something more private.

Step 2: How to Change the Audience on an Existing Post

Did you already publish a post only to find out nobody can share it? No problem. You can change its privacy setting at any time. This is the most common fix you'll need.

  • Find Your Post: Go to your profile and locate the specific post you want to make shareable.
  • Click the Audience Icon: Next to your name and the post's timestamp, you'll see a small icon representing its current audience (e.g., a silhouette of two people for "Friends" or a globe for "Public"). Click this icon.
  • Alternatively, use the three-dot menu (...): If you don't see the audience icon, click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of your post. From the menu that appears, select "Edit audience."
  • Set it to Public: In the list of audience options, select Public.

The post will update instantly, and the Share button will immediately appear for everyone who can see it. You can do this for any text update, photo, video, or link you've shared on your timeline.

How to Enable Sharing for a Facebook Business Page

By nature, a Facebook Business Page is a public entity. All posts made from a Business Page are set to Public by default and should automatically have a Share button. However, there are a couple of rare global settings that could potentially limit who can interact with your page and its content.

Check Your Page's Post and Story Sharing Settings

Facebook Pages have an overall setting to either allow or disallow sharing. This is almost always turned on by default, but it's worth checking if you're having persistent issues.

  1. On your Facebook Page, navigate to "Settings."
  2. Click on "Privacy," then select "Page and Tagging."
  3. You'll see options for "Allow others to share your posts to their stories?" and "Allow others to see and share your public Page information." Make sure these are enabled. In newer page layouts, sharing is enabled by default and might not have a specific on/off toggle unless other restrictions are in place.

Review Your Page Restrictions

A more common issue for Pages involves restrictions based on age or location. If you've set these limitations, people who don't meet your criteria won't be able to see or share your content.

  • Navigate to Settings Again: From your Page's dashboard, go to "Settings" >, "Privacy."
  • Go to "Public Page Information": Look for settings related to country or age restrictions.
  • Check for Restrictions: If you see "Country Restrictions" or "Age Restrictions" enabled, understand that users a) outside these countries or b) below that designated age will not even be able to see your post, let alone share it. While these restrictions can be necessary for certain brands, they are the primary reason why some followers might report not being able to see or share your Page's posts.

Unless you have specific legal or content requirements, keeping your Page fully public with no restrictions is the best way to maximize your sharing potential and organic reach.

The Deal with Sharing Posts from Facebook Groups

Facebook Groups are a completely different ballgame, and sharing is handled based on the group's own privacy settings. Understanding the difference between Public and Private groups is essential here.

Posts in Public Groups

These groups are visible to everyone. Anyone can find the group, see its members, and read all the posts without having to join. Posts made in a Public Group are fully shareable. When someone shares a post, their friends will see the original content and a link back to its location inside the group.

Posts in Private Groups

This is where most of the confusion comes from. Private groups are designed for confidentiality. The content is meant to stay within the group's community of members. You *can* technically hit "Share" on a post from a private group, but it behaves very differently:

  • What actually gets shared? Only a link to the original post inside the private group.
  • Who can see the content? ONLY other members of that same private group.
  • What do non-members see? If someone who is not in the group clicks the shared link, they'll simply see a message telling them the content is unavailable or that they need to join the group to view it. The post's text, images, and video will not be visible to them.

There is no admin setting to "enable public sharing" from a Private Group. The private nature of the group overrides any individual post's settings. It's working as intended to protect the members' privacy.

Troubleshooting: Share Button Still Invisible?

If you've set your post to "Public" and the Share button is still absent, here are a few other things to check before chalking it up to a temporary platform bug.

  • Review Your Full Profile Settings: Go to "Settings &, Privacy" >, "Settings" >, "Profile and Tagging." There, under "Tagging," you might see a setting like: "Allow others to share your posts to their story?" While this directly refers to Stories, old or misconfigured settings here have been known to cause conflicts. Make sure sharing is enabled.
  • Are You Viewing Your Own Post? Sometimes, the Share button appears differently for you (the creator) than it does for other viewers. Ask a friend to check if they can see the button on their end, or view your profile from a logged-out web browser.
  • Profile-Level Limitations: Are you using Facebook's "Profile Lock" feature? A locked profile heavily restricts who can see your content, often disabling public sharing functions entirely. To make posts shareable, your profile needs to be unlocked.
  • The Classic "Turn It Off and On Again": If you're using the mobile app, try closing and relaunching it. On a desktop, refresh the page or clear your browser's cache. Sometimes old data causes visual glitches.

In 99% of cases, the share button is missing because of a "Friends" or other restrictive privacy setting. Double-check that your post is genuinely set to Public, and your sharing abilities should be fully restored.
