How to Enable Instagram Checkout

By Spencer Lanoue

Turning your Instagram profile into a real, shoppable storefront is one of the most direct ways to convert followers into customers. Instead of just hoping people click a link in your bio, you can place buyable products right inside your posts, Reels, and Stories. This guide will walk you through exactly how to set up your Instagram Shop and enable checkout features, transforming your feed into a seamless extension of your e-commerce business.

What is an Instagram Shop and How Does Checkout Work?

An Instagram Shop is essentially a customizable digital storefront that lives right on your Instagram profile. It lets you feature products from your catalog, creating a central hub where users can browse everything you sell. From this shop, you can enable "shoppable" features, turning your regular content into sales opportunities.

When you hear "Instagram Checkout," you're hearing about the final step in this process. Historically, there have been a few ways for customers to complete a purchase, and it's good to know the difference:

  • Checkout on Your Website (Most Common): A user taps a product tag on your post, looks at the product details inside Instagram, and then taps a "View on Website" button to complete the purchase on your e-commerce store. This is the primary method for most businesses today. It offers a smooth discovery process on Instagram and leverages your existing checkout system.
  • Checkout on Instagram (for eligible US merchants): This is the famous in-app experience where the entire transaction - from product selection to payment and shipping info - happens without the user ever leaving Instagram. It reduces friction significantly, but it's only available to certain businesses in the United States and involves transaction fees paid to Meta.
  • Checkout with Messaging: This option directs interested users to start a conversation with you via Messenger or Instagram Direct Messages to complete the purchase. It's great for custom orders or businesses that rely on a consultative sales process.

No matter which method you use, the goal is the same: to shorten the path from discovery to purchase. To get started, you first need to meet a few eligibility requirements.

Before You Begin: Eligibility Requirements for Instagram Shopping

Before you get into the setup process, let’s make sure your business ticks all the right boxes. Meta has a clear set of rules to maintain the quality of its shopping ecosystem. You're likely eligible if you meet the following criteria:

  • Your business is in a supported market. Instagram Shops aren't available everywhere. You can check Meta's official list of supported countries to confirm your location is on it.
  • You sell eligible physical goods. The Shop must be used to sell physical products. Selling services, digital products, or items that violate Meta's Commerce Policies (like firearms, alcohol, or adult products) is not allowed.
  • You have a professional Instagram account. Your account must be set to either a Business or Creator profile. Personal accounts cannot access shopping features.
  • You have a connected Facebook Page. Your Instagram professional account must be linked to a Facebook Business Page. Don't worry, you don't need to post actively on the Facebook Page, but it's required for the back-end integration with Meta's business tools.
  • You own your e-commerce website domain. You’ll need to prove that you plan to sell from a website you own and operate.

If you meet these requirements, you're ready to start the setup process.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Set Up Your Instagram Shop

Setting up your shop involves a few different platforms in Meta's ecosystem, primarily Instagram and the Meta Commerce Manager. Follow these steps methodically, and you’ll have your shop live in no time.

Step 1: Convert to a Business or Creator Account

If you're still using a personal Instagram profile, your first move is to switch to a professional account. This unlocks a ton of business-specific features, including ads, analytics, and, most importantly, Instagram Shopping.

Here’s how to do it in the Instagram app:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon (☰) in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings and Privacy.
  3. Scroll down to For professionals and tap on Account type and tools.
  4. Tap Switch to professional account and follow the on-screen prompts to select a category that best describes your business.

Step 2: Connect Your Instagram to a Facebook Page

Your Instagram Shop is managed through Meta's tools, which require a link to a Facebook Page. If you don't already have one, you can create one during the process, but it’s much better to set one up yourself so you have full control.

To connect a Page:

  1. On your Instagram profile, tap Edit profile.
  2. Under Public business information, tap Page.
  3. You can either tap Create a new Facebook Page or Connect an existing Page. Follow the prompts to complete the link.

Step 3: Set Up Your Shop in Commerce Manager

This is where everything comes together. The Meta Commerce Manager is the central dashboard where you'll create your shop, upload your product catalog, and manage inventory and sales.

  1. Go to Meta Commerce Manager and click Add Shop.
  2. The setup wizard will guide you through the process. You'll first be asked where you want customers to buy from. This is where you select your checkout method: your website, Facebook or Instagram, or via messaging.
  3. Next, connect the Instagram business profile and Facebook Page you want to sell from.
  4. You'll be asked to provide your business email and choose the countries or regions you'll be shipping to.

Step 4: Create and Sync Your Product Catalog

Your catalog is the foundation of your shop, it's a data file containing all your product information, like titles, descriptions, images, prices, and links. You have three main options for creating and syncing your catalog:

  • Manual Upload: If you only have a handful of products, you can add them one by one directly in Commerce Manager. It's straightforward but not scalable for larger businesses.
  • Use a Data Feed (Pixel or File): For businesses with dozens or hundreds of products, this is a better method. You can upload a formatted spreadsheet (like a CSV file) or set up a Meta Pixel on your website to automatically pull in inventory.
  • Connect a Partner Platform (Easiest Method): If you use an e-commerce platform like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or Adobe Commerce, this is by far the simplest option. These platforms have direct integrations that automatically create and sync your product catalog with Meta Commerce Manager. Just install the Facebook & Instagram app or extension on your e-commerce platform and follow the instructions.

No matter which method you choose, take the time to ensure your product information is accurate and your photos are high-quality. This is your digital display window, so make it look great!

Step 5: Submit Your Shop for Review

Once you’ve set up your checkout method and created your catalog, Meta will need to review your shop to make sure it complies with their policies. This review process usually takes a few days, but it can sometimes take up to a couple of weeks if they need more information. You can check the status of your review in Commerce Manager.

Step 6: Turn On Shopping Features in Instagram

After your account gets the green light, there's one final step to take inside the Instagram app to officially activate the features.

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon (☰).
  2. Select Settings and Privacy, then tap Business (or Creator).
  3. Tap Set up Instagram Shopping. If you don't see this, your account is likely still under review.
  4. Follow the steps to connect the product catalog you created in Commerce Manager.

Once you've done this, you're ready to start tagging products across Instagram!

Making Your First Sale: Best Practices for Shoppable Content

Setting up your shop is just the beginning. The real magic happens when you integrate your products naturally into the content your audience already loves.

Tag Products in Feed Posts

When you create a new photo, carousel, or video post for your feed, you’ll now see an option to Tag Products alongside the option to tag people. You can tag up to five items per image or video, and these posts will appear with a small shopping bag icon, signaling to your followers that they are shoppable.

Use Product Stickers in Stories

Stories create a powerful sense of urgency and intimacy. Use the designated "Product" sticker to feature an item from your catalog directly in your Story. Users can tap the sticker to see the product details and click through to purchase. This is perfect for limited-time offers, new product launches, and "behind-the-scenes" content.

Feature Products in Reels

Reels are one of the best ways to get discovered on Instagram. You can now tag products in your Reels, allowing viewers to shop directly from your most engaging video content. Create tutorials, "how-to" videos, or lifestyle clips showing your products in action and tag them to drive sales.

Build Curated Collections

In your Shop, you can group products into "Collections," which function like curated virtual shelves. Create thematic collections like "Summer Essentials," "Staff Picks," or "The Perfect Gift Guide." This helps users browse with intent and makes your shop feel more like a boutique experience.

Final Thoughts

Setting up an Instagram Shop via Meta's Commerce Manager is the key that unlocks the platform's potential as a genuine sales channel.
