How to Edit a Facebook Page

Keeping your Facebook Page polished and up-to-date is one of the easiest ways to signal to customers that your business is active, professional, and trustworthy. But with Facebook's frequent layout changes, knowing exactly where to find the right settings can feel like a moving target. This guide will walk you through exactly how to edit every important part of your Facebook Page, from your visuals and contact info to the buttons and tabs that convince visitors to take action.

First Things First: How to Access Your Page Settings

Facebook has transitioned most profiles to its "New Pages Experience," which makes your Page act more like a personal profile. Acknowledging this is the first step. To edit anything, you need to make sure you're "acting" as your Page.

On a Desktop Computer:

  1. Log in to Facebook. In the top-right corner, click on your profile picture.
  2. A menu will drop down. Click "See all profiles," and select the Page you want to edit. Your screen will reload, and you'll now be browsing Facebook as that Page.
  3. Once you're on your Page's main feed, click your Page's profile picture in the top right again and select "Settings & Privacy," then "Settings." Alternatively, from your Page's profile, you can often just click the "Manage" button near the top. This takes you to your Professional Dashboard, where you can find "Page access" and other key settings on the left sidebar.

On a Mobile Device (Facebook App):

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to open the menu.
  2. Tap the drop-down arrow next to your name and select the Page you want to manage.
  3. Once you're switched over, tap the menu (your Page's profile picture in the bottom right again). Scroll down to "Settings & Privacy" and then tap "Settings" to access all your options.

Now that you're in the right place, you can start making impactful changes.

Editing Your Page's Core Visual Identity

Your profile picture and cover photo are the first things people see. They need to be sharp, on-brand, and properly sized to make a great first impression.

Updating Your Profile Picture and Cover Photo

Your profile picture is your brand's face across Facebook. It appears in search results, in the news feed next to your posts, and in comments. Your cover photo is the large banner image at the top of your Page, giving you a chance to tell a bigger story.

To Change Your Profile Picture:

  • Navigate to your Page's profile.
  • Hover over your profile picture and click the camera icon.
  • Choose "Upload Photo" to select a new image from your computer or "Choose from photos" to use one you've already uploaded.
  • Adjust the cropping and click "Save."

Pro-Tip: Your profile picture should be your logo. Since it's often displayed as a small circle, use a design that's simple and instantly recognizable. Avoid text that will become unreadable when shrunk. The ideal size is at least 176x176 pixels.

To Change Your Cover Photo:

  • On your Page's profile, hover over the cover photo area and click "Edit Cover Photo."
  • You can "Upload photo," "Choose from photos," or even "Create slideshow."
  • Once you've selected an image, you can drag it to reposition it perfectly.
  • Click "Save Changes."

Pro-Tip: Use your cover photo to showcase a new product, advertise a promotion, highlight your team, or convey your brand's vibe. Aim for an image that is 851x315 pixels for desktops. Remember that it will be cropped differently on mobile, so keep essential text and imagery centered.

Changing Your Facebook Page Name and Username

Your Page Name and Username (@handle) are critical for being discovered.

  • Page Name: This is your official business name. For example, "Bloom & Grow Garden Supply."
  • Username: This is your unique URL handle. For example, "@bloomandgrowsupply," which creates the URL facebook.com/bloomandgrowsupply.

How to Edit Your Page Name:

  1. Go to Settings > General Page Settings.
  2. Next to your name, click "Edit."
  3. Enter your new Page name and click "Review Change."

Be aware that Facebook must approve name changes. They typically review and decide within three days. You cannot use misleading terms or violate their Page name policies (e.g., you can't include your-business.com).

How to Edit Your Username:

  1. In General Page Settings, click "Edit" next to your current username.
  2. Type in your desired new username. Facebook will immediately tell you if it's available.
  3. Once you find one that works, click "Save Changes."

A good username is easy to remember and consistent with your handles on other social platforms.

Crafting the Perfect "About" Section

Your "About" section is where potential customers go to learn who you are, what you do, and if they can trust you. Leaving this incomplete is a huge missed opportunity.

To find these settings, navigate to your Page's main profile, and click the "About" tab.

Your Page Details

This is where you handle the high-level information that helps Facebook categorize you.

  • Category: This is a big one. You can choose up to three categories that describe your business (e.g., "Gardening Store," "Landscape Company," "Florist"). Choose accurately, as this directly impacts who Facebook shows your Page to. To change it, go to the "About" tab and find "Category."
  • Introduction/Bio: This is your elevator pitch. You have a short character limit to quickly describe what your Page is about. Make it clear and compelling. Think of it as a meta description for your brand.

Contact, Location, and Hours

This information removes friction for potential customers and builds credibility. Make it easy for people to get in touch or find your physical location.

  • Contact Info: Add your business phone number, email address, and website URL. If you don't have one, just leave the field blank. Having this info visible adds a layer of professionalism.
  • Location: If you're a brick-and-mortar business, fill out your full address. This will place you on a map and help you appear in local search results. If you're a service-area business or online-only, you can choose to hide your street address for privacy.
  • Hours: Add your operating hours for each day of the week. You can also specify "Always Open," "Permanently Closed," or set temporary service changes, like for a holiday. Keep this updated! An "Open" sign on Facebook that leads to a locked door in real life is a bad customer experience.

Optimizing Your Page for Action and Engagement

A well-edited Page doesn't just provide information, it guides visitors to take the next step. Your CTA button, pinned posts, and page tabs are designed for this exact purpose.

Customizing Your Call-to-Action (CTA) Button

That blue button sitting at the top of your Page is prime real estate. By default, it might say "Send Message," but you can change it to align with your most important business goal.

To Edit Your CTA Button:

  1. Go to your Page.
  2. Click the three dots (...) menu button next to "Edit Page".
  3. Select "Edit action button."
  4. You can then choose the button you prefer and follow the setup instructions, which may involve linking to your website, booking tool, or shop.

Popular CTA button options include:

  • Book Now: Perfect for appointment-based services.
  • Shop on Website: A direct link for e-commerce stores.
  • Contact Us: Leads to a contact form on your site.
  • Watch Video: Great for promoting a brand story or product demo.
  • Learn More: A general-purpose button for driving traffic to a landing page.

Think about the one thing you most want visitors to do when they land on your page, and choose your button accordingly.

Managing and Pinning Posts

Pinning a post allows you to keep your most important content right at the top of your Page feed, ensuring it's the first post any visitor sees. This is perfect for:

  • A current promotion or sale.
  • An upcoming event registration link.
  • Your most popular piece of content.
  • A major announcement.

How to Pin a Post:

  1. Scroll down your feed to find the post you want to feature.
  2. Click the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of that post's card.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select "Pin to top of page."

A small thumbtack icon will appear on the post, and it will remain at the top of your profile until you choose to unpin it by following the same steps.

Arranging Your Page Tabs and Templates

Tabs are the navigation links that appear under your Profile and Cover Photo (e.g., "Photos," "Videos," "Shop," "Reviews"). You can, and should, customize these to fit your business.

  1. Go to Settings > Your Page Settings, and look for "Templates and tabs."
  2. Here, you can choose a Page template designed for specific business types (e.g., "Services," "Venues," "Nonprofit"). Changing your template will re-order your tabs to a recommended layout.
  3. Below the template options, you see your current list of tabs. You can drag and drop these to change their order or toggle them on and off.

For example, if you run a restaurant, you'd want the "Menu" and "Reviews" tabs to be highly visible. If you're a streamer, the "Live" and "Videos" tabs are ideal. Get rid of tabs you don't use to keep things clean and focused.
