How to Change Your Profile on TikTok

Your TikTok profile is your brand's digital handshake, the first thing new followers see, and your most valuable piece of real estate on the platform. Whether you're rebranding, shifting your niche, or just want to refresh your look, knowing how to change every element effectively is fundamental. This guide walks you through a complete makeover of your TikTok profile, from the simple photo swap to the strategic username change, giving you the practical steps and branding insights to make it count.

First, Where to Find Your Edit Profile Settings

Before you can optimize anything, you need to know where the controls are. Getting to the main editing screen is straightforward and the starting point for every change we’ll cover. Don’t overthink it, just follow these quick steps.

  • Open the TikTok app on your phone.
  • Tap on the Profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  • Under your follower count and bio, you'll see a prominent button that says Edit profile. Tap it.

That's it. You're now on the command center screen for your entire profile identity. From here, you can modify everything from your name to your website link.

Making Your Visual First Impression: Your Profile Photo &, Video

Your profile picture or video isn't just a static image on your page, it’s the tiny icon that follows you everywhere on TikTok. It appears next to your comments, on the For You Page next to your username, and in DMs. This small circle is working overtime for your brand recognition, so it needs to be clear and memorable.

Changing Your Profile Photo

Your profile photo is your go-to identifier. For most creators and brands, a static image is the clearest option. Here’s how to swap it out:

  1. From the Edit profile screen, tap on your current profile photo (or the placeholder icon). You may see an option to "Change photo".
  2. You'll get a few choices: Take photo, Upload photo, or View photo. Select "Upload photo" to choose an image from your camera roll.
  3. Once you select your picture, you can pinch to zoom and drag to position it perfectly within the circular frame.
  4. When you’re happy with the placement, tap Save.

Actionable Advice for Your Photo:

  • Personal Brands: Use a high-resolution, clear headshot where your face is easily visible. Good lighting and a simple, uncluttered background work best. Your face is your brand, and seeing it clearly builds trust with your audience.
  • Businesses: Use a clean, simple version of your logo. It must be legible even when shrunk down to a tiny circle. Test it out: does it look like an indistinguishable smudge in the comment section? If so, consider using a simplified icon or wordmark from your main logo.
  • Make it Pop: Use contrasting colors that stand out against TikTok’s light and dark modes. A vibrant background color or a clear silhouette can make your profile icon much easier to spot in a sea of comments.

Swapping to a Profile Video

A profile video can add a dynamic, eye-catching element to your page. It’s a short, looping clip that replaces your static photo. Be mindful, though - what’s cool on your profile page might be distracting in the comments section.

  1. From the Edit profile screen, tap on your current profile photo, but this time select the video camera icon or "Change video".
  2. You'll be directed to your phone's gallery to select a video.
  3. TikTok allows you to trim the video down to a maximum of 6 seconds. Pick the best segment and adjust the timeline.
  4. Tap Save to set it as your new profile video.

What Makes a Good Profile Video?

Simplicity is your friend. Think of a simple, repeatable motion that works well as a loop. This could be a quick facial expression, you raising a coffee cup, a loading icon for a tech brand, or a single brushstroke for an artist. The best profile videos add personality without being chaotic.

The Name Game: Your Name vs. Your Username

This is an area that confuses many users, but the distinction is simple and important. Your Name (display name) is for identification and branding, while your Username (@handle) is your unique address on the platform.

Editing Your Name (Your Display Name)

Your Name appears in bold at the very top of your profile. It’s highly visible and more flexible than your username.

  • How to change it: On the Edit profile screen, tap on Name. Type in your new name and tap Save.
  • The Rules: You can only change your Name once every 7 days. It can be up to 30 characters long and can include spaces, emojis, and special characters.

Strategy &, Advice for Your Name:

Because it's quite flexible, your display name offers a great branding opportunity. You can include keywords to immediately signal what your account is about. For example:

  • A personal brand: "Sarah | Digital Marketing"
  • A fitness coach: "Alex | Fitness From Home 💪"
  • A small business: "Willow Creek Pottery"

This small addition tells someone exactly what you do before they've even watched a single video.

Changing Your Username (Your @handle)

Your username is your unique identifier, your digital address that starts with the "@" sign. It appears in your profile URL (tiktok.com/@yourusername) and is used when people tag you.

  • How to change it: On the Edit profile screen, tap on Username. Type in your desired username. TikTok will instantly check if it’s available. If it is, tap Save.
  • The Rules: You can only change your username once every 30 days. It can only contain letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. No spaces are allowed.

🚨 A Word of Warning About Changing Your Username🚨

Changing your username is a big deal and should be done with care. When you change it, you instantly break every single link pointing to your old username. This includes:

  • Links on other platforms: Any `tiktok.com/@oldusername` links on your blog, Instagram, or email signature will lead to a "user not found" page.
  • Tags in other videos: If other creators have tagged you in their video descriptions, those tags will no longer lead to your profile.
  • Your QR code: Your old TikTok QR code will be useless.

Before you commit, be sure you have a good reason and that you plan to update your links everywhere else immediately. Consistency across platforms is also a huge bonus, so check if your desired username is available on Instagram, YouTube, and anywhere else your brand lives.

Your Elevator Pitch: Crafting the Perfect Bio

With only 80 characters, your TikTok bio is one of the most hardworking sentences in marketing. It needs to quickly communicate who you are, what you do, and why someone should follow you. It’s your account’s elevator pitch.

The Technical Bits: How to Edit Your Bio

Tap Bio on the Edit profile screen, type in your new masterpiece (remember, you only have 80 characters), and hit Save.

What Makes an Awesome Bio? (And How to Write One)

An effective bio usually answers three questions for a visitor: Who are you helping? How are you helping them? What do they get out of it? This can be distilled into a simple formula:

"I help [your audience] do [what you teach/provide]."

Let's look at some examples:

  • For a financial advisor: "I help millennials invest their first $1,000 wisely. 💸"
  • For a vintage clothing store: "Your source for hand-picked 90s vintage fashion. ✨"
  • For a travel creator: "Showing you how to travel the world on a budget. ✈️"

Other must-haves for a strong bio include:

  • Relevant Emojis: They save character space, add personality, and make your bio more scannable and visually appealing.
  • A Call to Action (CTA): Tell people what to do next! Even if you don't have the link-in-bio feature yet, you can say "Follow for daily tips!" or point down to your latest video with an emoji "👇 Check out my pinned videos".

Connecting Beyond TikTok: Social Channels &, Your Website

Once you’ve hooked visitors with your content and bio, you want to give them a way to connect with you on other platforms or visit your website. This is how you convert followers into community members or customers.

Adding Instagram and YouTube Links

TikTok lets you add clickable logos for your Instagram and YouTube profiles. It’s a direct bridge to your other core platforms.

  1. In the Edit profile menu, scroll down to the Social section.
  2. Tap on Instagram or YouTube.
  3. You’ll be prompted to log in to that respective account to authorize the connection.
  4. Once authorized, a small clickable icon for that platform will appear on your profile.

Adding a Website Link (The Famous "Link in Bio")

The ability to add a single, clickable URL in your bio is a game-changer for driving traffic off of TikTok. However, there’s a catch: this feature isn’t available to everyone immediately.

To add a clickable link, you must either:

  1. Have a Business Account.
  2. Have a Creator Account with at least 1,000 followers.

For most new creators or businesses, switching to a Business Account is the quickest path. To do this, go to Settings and privacy >, Account >, Switch to Business Account and follow the prompts. The primary trade-off is that Business Accounts have a more limited library of commercial-use music and sounds.

Once you are eligible, a Website field will appear on your Edit profile screen. Tap it, paste your URL, and tap Save. You can use this for your homepage, a new blog post, or a link aggregator service (like Linktree) to showcase multiple destinations at once.

Final Thoughts

Perfecting your TikTok profile is a simple process, but the thinking behind it is where the real value lies. Your profile is a dynamic tool that should evolve with your brand, and each element - from your username and bio to your profile photo - works together to tell a story and convince new viewers to tap that follow button.
