How to Change Page Owner on Facebook Business Manager

Changing the owner of your Facebook Page isn't as simple as clicking a button, but it's a completely manageable process once you understand how Meta structures admin permissions. Instead of a single owner, Pages are owned by a Meta Business Account (formerly Facebook Business Manager). This guide will walk you through the entire process step-by-step, including how to handle common roadblocks, so you can transfer ownership cleanly and get back to managing your community.

Understanding Facebook Page Ownership: The Big Picture

Before we get into the steps, it’s important to shift your mindset. Traditionally, a Page was owned by a personal Facebook profile. Today, for any business operating seriously on the platform, a Page should be owned by a Meta Business Account. This Business Account acts as a central hub that holds all your assets - your Page, your ad account, your Instagram profile, your pixel, and more.

Therefore, "changing the Page owner" really means transferring the Page from one Meta Business Account to another.

There are two primary scenarios you might be facing:

  • Scenario 1: Your Page is already in a Meta Business Account, and you need to move it to a different one (e.g., an agency's account, a new parent company's account, or your own freshly made Business Account).
  • Scenario 2: Your Page is still tied directly to one person's personal profile and has never been added to a Business Account.

We'll tackle both, starting with the most common situation.

How to Transfer a Facebook Page to Another Business Account

This is the standard process for transferring ownership between two existing Meta Business Accounts. It’s a two-part dance: the current owner has to release the Page, and the new owner has to claim it.

Part 1: The Current Owner Must Remove the Page From Their Business Account

The person performing these steps must be an Admin of the current Meta Business Account that owns the Page.

  1. Navigate to Meta Business Suite: Log in to Facebook and go to business.facebook.com. Make sure you've selected the correct Business Account from the dropdown in the top left if you manage more than one.
  2. Go to Business Settings: Find the gear icon in the bottom-left corner labeled "Settings." Click it. From there, you might see another gear icon or a button that says "More Business Settings." This will take you to the classic Business Manager backend.
  3. Find Your Page: In the left-hand navigation menu, go to Accounts >, Pages. You will see a list of all Facebook Pages associated with this Business Account.
  4. Select and Remove the Page: Click on the Page you want to transfer. On the right-hand panel, you'll see a list of people who have access and, at the top, a "Remove" button. Click it.
  5. Confirm Removal: A confirmation pop-up will appear warning you that removing the page is permanent. Confirm that you want to proceed.

Once you’ve done this, the Page is no longer an asset within your Business Account. It now exists independently, waiting for the new owner to claim it. All employees who had permissions through that Business Account will lose their access.

Part 2: The New Owner Must Add (Claim) the Page

Now, the Admin of the new Meta Business Account needs to step in and claim ownership.

  1. Navigate to Business Settings: Just like before, the new owner should go to their Meta Business Suite and navigate to Settings >, More Business Settings.
  2. Go to the Pages Section: In the left navigation, go to Accounts >, Pages.
  3. Add the Page: Click the blue "+ Add" button. You will see three options:
    • Add a Page: Claim ownership of an existing Facebook Page. This is the one you need.
    • Request Access to a Page: This is for agencies or partners who need to work on a page but not own it.
    • Create a New Page: This is for starting from scratch.
    Select "Add a Page."
  4. Enter the Page Name or URL: In the pop-up window, start typing the name of the Facebook Page or paste in its full URL. Select the correct Page when it appears.
  5. Confirm and Add: As long as the Page was successfully removed from the previous Business Account, it will be added to yours almost instantly since you are claiming full ownership. You will now see it in your list of Page assets.

And that’s it! The ownership has now been successfully transferred. You can now go to the "People" or "Business Assets Groups" tab within your Business Settings to assign roles and permissions to your team members.

What if Your Page Isn't in a Business Account yet?

If your Page is still "owned" by a single person's profile, the process is slightly different. Before you can transfer it to its final destination (the new Business Account), you must first add it to any Business Account. This can be a new one you create just for this purpose, or the current owner's existing one.

Step 1: Create or Select a "Staging" Business Account.

The person who currently has full admin control over the Page needs to log in to business.facebook.com/overview and either create a new Business Account or choose an existing one they manage.

Step 2: Add the Page to That Business Account.

Follow the same steps as in "Part 2" for the new owner: Navigate to Business Settings >, Accounts >, Pages and click the "+ Add" button. Select "Add a Page." and search for the Page name. Since you are already a full admin on the page, the claim will be approved instantly.

Step 3: Proceed with the Transfer as Normal.

Now that the Page is officially an asset within a Business Account, you can follow the instructions in the previous section: remove the Page from the initial Business Account, then have the new intended owner add it to theirs.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting Tips

The process doesn't always go smoothly. Here are some of the most common issues you might encounter and how to deal with them.

"The 'Remove' Button is Grayed Out!"

This almost always means the Page is set as the Primary Page for the Business Account. A Business Account needs one Page to act as its primary identity, and you cannot remove it without designating a replacement first.

How to Fix It:

  • Go to your Business Settings and click on "Business Info" at the bottom of the left navigation menu.
  • At the top, you'll see a field for "Primary Page." Click "Edit."
  • Select another Page in your Business Account to be the new primary one. If you don't have another, you can create a new, blank 'placeholder' Page for this purpose.
  • Once you've changed the Primary Page, go back to Accounts >, Pages, and the "Remove" button for the Page you want to transfer should now be clickable.

"I Don't Know Which Business Account Owns the Page."

If you have admin access to a Page but aren't sure which Business Account owns it, you can usually find out from the Page itself.

How to check:

  • Go to your Facebook Page and select "Settings" from the left-hand menu.
  • Click on "New Pages Experience."
  • Look for a tab called "Page Access." Here, you might see a section detailing the "Business Account that owns this Page."

"An Old Agency or Employee Owns the Page and I Can't Reach Them."

This is a difficult situation and a cautionary tale about why companies should always own their own social media assets. If the owning Meta Business Account owner is unresponsive, your options are limited.

The best course of action is to make every possible attempt to contact the admin of that Business Account. If that fails, your last resort is Meta's support, but you will need to provide documentation proving your rightful ownership of the business and the Page, such as a trademark, business registration papers, and a notarized statement explaining the situation. This can be a long and complex process with no guarantee of success.

"The Transfer is Blocked Because of Ad Account Issues."

You cannot transfer a Page if it is connected to an ad account within the current Business Manager that has an outstanding balance. You must settle all payments due first before you're able to remove the Page.

How to fix it: Go to the "Billing &, Payments" section of your Business Settings and make sure all invoices are paid. Do the same for any ad accounts directly linked to the Page being transferred.

Final Thoughts

Transferring ownership of a Facebook Page boils down to releasing it from one Meta Business Account and claiming it in another. By following these steps and anticipating potential roadblocks like Primary Page settings or outstanding ad balances, you can manage the handover smoothly and professionally, keeping your valuable business assets secure.
