How to Archive a Facebook Page

Taking your Facebook Page offline doesn't have to mean hitting the delete button and losing years of hard work. The better option is to archive it, preserving your content and keeping your options open for the future. This guide gives you the exact step-by-step process for downloading all your Facebook Page data, along with the smartest way to temporarily take your page offline until you're ready to bring it back.

Why Archive Your Facebook Page Instead of Deleting It?

In a digital world where content is your most valuable asset, deleting your Facebook Page is a permanent decision with big consequences. Archiving, on the other hand, is a strategic move that gives you flexibility and peace of mind. Before we get into the "how," let's go over the "why."

Think about all the effort you've put into your Page: the photos, the videos, the copy you wrote, the conversations you had with your community. That's a massive amount of valuable history. Deleting it erases that history forever. Archiving, which involves downloading a complete copy of your data, creates a personal backup of everything.

Here’s why it’s almost always the better choice:

  • You Preserve All Your Content. Every post, image, video, and comment thread you’ve ever created is part of your brand's journey. Downloading this data means you have a complete digital record that you can reference, repurpose, or simply keep for your records.
  • You Secure Your Page Name and URL. Once you delete a Page, its unique username and URL are up for grabs. Archiving your content and then unpublishing the page (more on that difference in a moment) lets you hold onto that prime digital real estate, preventing brand squatters from snapping it up.
  • It's Perfect for a Rebrand or Hiatus. Businesses evolve. Maybe you’re pivoting your brand, pressing pause on operations, or just need a mental health break from social media management. Archiving allows you to safely store your Page’s history and temporarily deactivate it without the finality of deletion. When you're ready to come back, you can reactivate it.
  • You Safeguard Against Glitches. Social media platforms aren't immune to bugs or account issues. Having your own offline copy of your Page's content acts as a failsafe, a digital insurance policy in case anything ever goes wrong.

Understanding Your Options: Unpublish vs. "Archive" vs. Delete

Facebook's terminology can get a little confusing, and the right option for you depends on your goal. There isn't a single "Archive Page" button. Instead, "archiving" is a process that usually involves two key actions: first, downloading your data, and second, deactivating (or "unpublishing") the page.

Deactivating (or "Unpublishing") Your Page

Deactivating is the modern term for what used to be called "unpublishing." When you deactivate your Facebook Page, you are making it completely invisible to the public. It won't show up in search results and anyone trying to visit the URL will be told the content isn't available.

For you and other page admins, however, the page is still there behind the scenes. You can see it, access the settings, and view all its content. All your likes, followers, and posts are saved exactly as they were.

When to use it: This is a temporary move. It's the perfect choice if you're taking a short break, preparing for a rebrand, or need to perform major updates privately. You can reactivate the page at any moment, and it will reappear exactly as it was.

Downloading Your Page Information (The "Archive" Step)

This is the literal act of archiving. It means creating a downloadable file that contains a complete copy of your Page's information. This is your personal backup, the offline record of everything you've created.

The download can include:

  • Posts you've shared
  • Photos and videos
  • Your Page information from the "About" section
  • And much more depending on what you select

When to use it: Always do this before you deactivate or delete a page. It's the crucial first step to ensuring you have a record of your work. It's also smart to do this periodically as a regular backup, even if you have no plans to deactivate your page.

Deleting Your Page

This is the nuclear option. Deleting your page is permanent. After a grace period of 30 days during which you can reverse the decision, everything will be gone for good. There is no getting it back.

When to use it: Only when you are 100% positive that you will never, ever need the Page, its content, its followers, or its name again. It's a point of no return. Unless a legal or business closure requires it, deactivating is a much safer bet.

How to Download Your Facebook Page Information (The 'Archive' Step)

Ready to create that all-important backup of your page? This process is done from your desktop computer. The steps reflect Facebook's New Pages Experience, which is standard for most pages today.

  1. Navigate to your Facebook Page. In the top right corner, click on your Page's profile picture, then select "Settings &, privacy," followed by "Settings."
  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on "Privacy" and then on "Your Facebook information."
  3. You will see several options here. Look for "Download profile information" and click the "View" button next to it. Since you are performing this action from a Page, this will relate to your Page's information, not your personal profile.
  4. On the Download page, you get to customize your archive file. Here are your choices:
    • Format: You can choose either HTML or JSON. For most people, HTML is the best option because it creates a folder of files that are easy to browse and look just like the Facebook interface. JSON is really for developers who want to import the data into another service.
    • Media quality: You can select High, Medium, or Low. If storage space isn't an issue, choose High to get the best-quality copies of your photos and videos.
    • Date range: The default is "All time," which is usually what you want for a full archive. You can also specify a custom time period if needed.
  5. Scroll down to select what information you want to include in your download. By default, most things are selected. It's a good idea to click "Deselect all" and then manually check the boxes for the items you care most about, such as "Posts," "Photos and videos," and "Page information."
  6. Once you've customized everything, click the blue "Request a download" button at the bottom.

Facebook will now start compiling your file. This isn't instant - it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours or even days if your page has a huge amount of content. You'll receive a notification from Facebook when your file is ready to be downloaded.

What’s Next? How to Deactivate Your Page

Once you've received the notification that your download is complete and you've saved your archive file to a safe place (like your computer and a cloud drive), you're ready to make the page invisible to the public by deactivating it.

  1. Go back to your Page's "Settings &, privacy" >, "Settings" >, "Privacy" menu.
  2. Click on "Facebook Page information."
  3. At the very bottom of this section, you'll see a line that says "Deactivation and deletion." Click "View."
  4. Here, you'll be presented with two choices. Be very careful to select the correct one:
    • Deactivate Page: Choose this one. The description clearly states, "This can be temporary. Your page will be disabled..."
    • Delete Page: Do NOT choose this one unless you are absolutely sure you want to permanently erase the page.
  5. Click "Continue" and follow the on-screen prompts. Facebook will ask for your password for security and you may need to provide a reason for deactivating. Once you confirm, your page will be deactivated immediately.

What Happens After you Deactivate Your Page?

Instantly, your page vanishes from public view. Anyone with a direct link will get an error message, and it will no longer show up in search. For you, the admin, it's still accessible through your settings. You can review past content and analytics privately.

The best part about deactivation is its reversibility.

How to Reactivate Your Facebook Page

When you're ready to make your page live again, the process is simple. Just go back to the same "Deactivation and deletion" settings area. Facebook will recognize the page is deactivated and present you with an option to "Reactivate" it. With a click, it will be back online instantly, with all your content, followers, and settings intact.

Final Thoughts

This two-step archiving process - first downloading your data and then deactivating your page - gives you the ultimate flexibility. It allows you to step away from your page for as long as you need, secure in the knowledge that your hard-won content is safely backed up and your brand's digital identity is protected.
