How to Allow Tags on Facebook

Unlock the power of your social connections by learning exactly how to allow and manage tags on Facebook. This guide will walk you through controlling who can tag your personal profile and ensuring your business Page is open for mentions, helping you foster community and boost your online presence.

Understanding Facebook Tagging: Personal Profiles vs. Business Pages

Before we get into the settings, it's important to understand the two main types of tagging on Facebook. How you manage them - and why - is completely different.

  • Tagging a Personal Profile: This happens when a friend links your personal profile in a photo, a post, or a check-in. By default, these tagged posts can show up on your own timeline for your friends to see. For personal profiles, controlling tags is all about privacy. You want to manage what content associated with you appears on your profile.
  • Tagging (or Mentioning) a Business Page: This happens when a customer, fan, or partner links to your business Page in their post or Story. They do this by typing the "@" symbol followed by your Page name. For businesses, you generally want this to happen as much as possible. Tagging is a form of free marketing, user-generated content, and social proof. Controlling these settings is about visibility and engagement.

We'll cover both scenarios, starting with how to lock down your personal profile and then how to open up your business Page for valuable mentions.

How to Manage Tagging on Your Personal Facebook Profile

You can’t technically stop a friend from typing your name in their post, but you have complete control over whether that post appears on your timeline. This is done through a powerful feature called Timeline Review. When enabled, nothing shows up on your timeline unless you manually approve it.

Step 1: Turn On Timeline Review

Timeline Review is your best friend for managing your digital reputation. It acts as a gatekeeper, creating a holding area for any posts you're tagged in. You can then review them and decide whether to "Add to Timeline" or "Hide."

To enable Timeline Review on a desktop computer:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy, then click Settings.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click Profile and Tagging.
  4. Under the "Reviewing" section, find the setting that says "Review posts you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile?"
  5. Click Edit and toggle the feature On.

To enable Timeline Review on the mobile app (iOS or Android):

  1. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the "Audience and Visibility" section and tap Profile and Tagging.
  4. Under the "Reviewing" section, tap "Review posts you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile?"
  5. Toggle the switch to the On position.

Once this is enabled, you'll receive a notification whenever someone tags you. You can click on it to go to your Timeline Review and decide what to do with the post. Now, you’ll never be caught off guard by an unflattering photo or unexpected post showing up on your personal timeline again.

Step 2: Decide Who Can See Posts You're Tagged In

Even after you approve a tag and add it to your timeline, you can still control who sees it. This setting determines the default audience for a post someone else tagged you in.

In the same Profile and Tagging menu, look for the option: "When you're tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience of the post if they can't already see it?"

Your options typically include:

  • Friends: Only your friends will see the post on your timeline.
  • Friends of Friends: A wider audience.
  • Only Me: You can approve the tag, so it's linked to your name in your friend’s post, but choose for it not to be visible on your own timeline at all.

Setting this to "Friends" or even "Only Me" is a good second layer of privacy control.

Step 3: Manage Your General Tagging Settings

While still in the Profile and Tagging section, review the first option at the top: "Who can post on your profile?" and "Who can see what others post on your profile?"

For maximum privacy, most people set "Who can post on your profile?" to Only Me. This stops others from publishing directly to your timeline entirely. Combined with Timeline Review for tags, this gives you near-complete control over what shows up on your personal page.

How to Allow Others to Tag Your Facebook Business Page

For a brand, creator, or public figure, getting tagged is a good thing! It expands your reach, builds community, and provides valuable user-generated content. You need to make sure your Page settings are configured to allow this. Most pages have this enabled by default, but it’s always a good idea to check.

These settings are managed through your Page itself or the Meta Business Suite.

Step 1: Check your Page Tagging

If you're managing your page directly on Facebook (not through Business Suite), the process is straightforward.

To check tagging settings on your Page:

  1. Go to your Facebook Business Page.
  2. On the left-hand menu, click on Settings.
  3. Click on Privacy.
  4. Select Page and Tagging.

Here you’ll find two key settings:

  • "Who can post on your Page?" For business interaction, this should ideally be set to Everyone. This allows visitors to write on your Page wall.
  • "Allow others to view and tag photos and videos published by [Your Page Name]?" Make sure this is toggled On.

Most importantly, under a slightly different section (which can be confusing), check the global tagging ability.

  1. While still on your Page, go to Settings on the left.
  2. Click New Pages Experience and then Page and tagging.
  3. Look for Tagging settings and ensure "Allow others to view and tag photos and videos published by [Your Page Name]" is turned on. Meta's settings can be a bit redundant, so it's good to check both spots if you're troubleshooting.

If your Page is managed via Meta Business Suite, the path is similar. Go to Business Suite, select "Settings," find your Page settings, and navigate to the "Page and Tagging" sections.

Step 2: Troubleshoot Common Page Tagging Issues

Ever had a customer say, "I tried to tag you but couldn't find your page"? It’s a common and frustrating problem. Here are a few reasons why it might happen and how to fix it.

Problem: The User's Search Doesn't Find Your Page

When a user types "@" followed by your name, Facebook's algorithm tries to quickly find the most relevant Page. Sometimes, it fails.

  • Solution 1: Be Precise. Advise users to type your Page name exactly as it appears, including any special characters or punctuation. Often, waiting a second or two after typing can help Facebook’s search catch up.
  • Solution 2: Ask Them to "Like" the Page. If a user already follows or has liked your Page, Facebook is much more likely to suggest it when they try to tag you.

Problem: Your Page Has Restrictions

If your Page has age or country restrictions, users who don't meet those criteria won't be able to see or tag your Page.

  • Solution: Go to your Page Settings >, Privacy and review any Country Restrictions or Age Restrictions you have in place. Only use these if they are absolutely necessary for your business, as they can limit your organic visibility.

Problem: The User Is Creating a New Post vs. Sharing Your Content

When a user shares one of your existing posts, your page is tagged automatically. The problem often arises when they create a completely new post. Make sure they know to use the "@mention" feature within their own content.

Best Practices: Using Tagging to Grow Your Brand

Once you’ve confirmed people can tag your Page, it’s time to start encouraging it. Tagging and mentions are at the heart of organic social media marketing.

1. Run a User-Generated Content (UGC) Campaign

Ask your followers to post a photo with your product or at your location and tag your page for a chance to be featured. This not only generates authentic content but also spreads your brand's name across your followers' networks.

Example: A local coffee shop runs a contest asking customers to post their best "coffee art" photos and tag the shop's page.

2. Collaborate and Cross-Promote

When you're working with partners, influencers, or even showcasing a neighboring business, always tag their Page in your posts and Stories. It’s a professional courtesy that encourages them to do the same, introducing your brand to their audience.

Example: A fitness apparel brand posts a photo of a sponsored athlete wearing their gear, making sure to tag the athlete's personal profile (with permission) and any other brands involved, like the gym or sneaker company.

3. Engage With Every Mention

Whenever someone tags your Page, take it as an opportunity to connect. At a minimum, "like" their post. Even better, leave a friendly comment thanking them. Acknowledging your community makes people feel seen and more likely to tag you again in the future.

Final Thoughts

Managing your tags on Facebook comes down to mastering two core ideas: using Timeline Review for personal privacy and ensuring your Page settings are open for public engagement. Taking control of these settings helps you build the online presence you want, whether it’s a carefully curated personal profile or a thriving brand community.
