How to Add Highlights on Facebook

Want to give your best Facebook Stories a permanent home on your profile? You're in the right place. Facebook Highlights let you rescue your most valuable Stories from their 24-hour lifespan, organizing them into curated collections that live right below your profile info for everyone to see. This guide will walk you through exactly how to create, edit, and strategically use Facebook Highlights to build your brand or personal profile.

What Are Facebook Highlights (and Why Should You Care)?

Think of Facebook Highlights as the "greatest hits" album for your Stories. Instead of letting that awesome poll, behind-the-scenes video, or customer testimonial vanish after a day, you can save it to a themed Highlight collection. This feature is more than just a scrapbook, it’s a powerful tool for storytelling and brand building.

Highlights are one of the first things a new visitor sees on your profile, making them prime real estate for making a great first impression. Instead of forcing people to scroll through your entire feed to understand who you are or what you do, you can guide their experience right from the top.

Here’s why they matter so much:

  • They Extend Your Content's Lifespan: The biggest drawback of Stories is their temporary nature. You put effort into creating engaging content, and poof, it's gone. Highlights give your best work a permanent spot, delivering value long after the initial 24 hours.
  • They Organize Your Information: You can create different Highlights for different topics. A bakery might have Highlights for "Custom Cakes," "Daily Specials," "Meet the Bakers," and "Event Catering." This makes it incredibly easy for followers to find the exact information they’re looking for.
  • They Shape Your Brand Identity: With custom covers and curated content, Highlights allow you to create a polished, on-brand look. They instantly tell visitors what you’re all about, whether it's expert advice, stylish products, or a fun company culture.
  • They Showcase Social Proof: A Highlight dedicated to user-generated content, positive reviews, or five-star feedback is one of the most effective ways to build trust and credibility without saying a word yourself.

How to Create Your First Facebook Highlight: A Step-by-Step Guide

Before you get started, there's one small but important prerequisite: you need to have your Story Archive turned on. This feature automatically saves your Stories so you can add them to a Highlight later. Most of the time, this is on by default, but it's good to check.

To check your Story Archive settings:

  1. On your mobile app, go to your profile.
  2. Tap the three dots (...) next to "Add to Story" and select "Story Archive."
  3. If you see your past stories, you're good to go! If not, you may be prompted to turn on archiving.

Once you’ve confirmed your archive is active, you’re ready to create your first Highlight.

Step 1: Go To Your Facebook Profile

Open the Facebook app on your phone and navigate to your personal profile or Business Page. The process is nearly identical for both. Right below your bio and your "Add to Story" button, you should see a section for Story Highlights.

Step 2: Tap "New" to Create a Highlight

If you’ve never created a Highlight before, you’ll see a circle with a plus sign labeled "New." Tap on it. This will open up your Story Archive, showing you all the past photo and video Stories you've posted.

Step 3: Select the Stories You Want to Include

Scroll through your archived content and tap on the Stories you want to add to this specific Highlight. Remember, each Highlight should have a theme. For example, if you're creating a "Q&A" Highlight, only select the Stories where you answered questions from your audience. A blue checkmark will appear on the stories you select. Once you’ve picked all the relevant ones, tap "Next" in the top right corner.

Step 4: Choose a Name and Cover Photo

Now it’s time to give your Highlight its identity. You’ll be prompted to do two things:

  • Add a Title: This text appears below the Highlight on your profile. Keep it short, clear, and descriptive. Think "Products," "Tips," "Team," or "Portfolio." Emojis can add some personality here if they fit your brand.
  • Edit the Cover: This is the circular icon people will see on your profile. By default, Facebook will use the first Story you selected as the cover. To change it, tap "Edit Cover." You have two options:
    • Choose a different frame from one of the Stories you've already added to the Highlight.
    • Upload a custom image from your phone's camera roll. (This is the best option for a professional, cohesive look.)

Step 5: Tap "Done" and You're Live!

Once you are happy with your title and cover, tap "Done" or "Add." Your Highlight will now appear on your profile! You can reorder your highlights by pressing and holding one, then dragging it left or right.

How to Edit or Delete an Existing Highlight

Your business evolves, and your Highlights should too. Luckily, it's easy to keep them fresh and relevant. You can add more content, remove old posts, change the cover, or get rid of a Highlight completely.

Adding or Removing Stories

Did you post a new Story that belongs in an existing collection? Here’s how to add it:

  1. On your profile, press and hold the Highlight you want to edit.
  2. A menu will pop up. Select "Edit Highlight."
  3. You'll be taken back to your Story Archive. Deselect videos or images you want to remove, or select new content you wish to add.
  4. When you’re finished, tap "Done."

This is great for updating a "Portfolio" with your latest work or adding new customer testimonials to your "Reviews" Highlight.

Changing the Title or Cover

If you've rebranded or just want to freshen things up with new cover icons, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the target Highlight and select "Edit Highlight."
  2. From here, you can tap on the current title to rename it.
  3. Tap on "Edit Cover" to choose a new cover image from your existing stories or upload a brand new one from your phone.
  4. Hit "Done" to save the changes.

Deleting a Highlight

If a Highlight is no longer relevant (like a promotion that has ended), you can permanently remove it.

  1. Press and hold the Highlight you want to delete.
  2. From the pop-up menu, select "Delete Highlight."
  3. Facebook will ask you to confirm. Tap "Delete" again, and it will be removed from your profile.

Strategic Ideas for Your Business Highlights

Knowing how to make a Highlight is one thing, but knowing what to put in them is what sets successful brands apart. Treat your Highlights like a website navigation bar - make it easy for people to find exactly what they need.

Here are some essential Highlight categories almost any business can use:

  • About Us / Our Story: Introduce the people behind the brand. Share your mission, your founding story, or a day in the life at the office. This builds a human connection.
  • Products / Services: Create a dedicated Highlight for each major product or service category. Include short demo videos, feature call-outs, links to shop, and pricing information.
  • Testimonials / Reviews: Your happiest customers are your best marketers. Screenshot and share positive comments, reviews, and user-generated content (with permission, of course!). This is social proof gold.
  • FAQ: What are the questions you get asked constantly? Answer them in your Stories and save them to an FAQ Highlight. This saves you time and helps potential customers self-serve.
  • Behind the Scenes (BTS): Show your process, the making of a product, or your team at work. BTS content makes your brand feel authentic and transparent.
  • Events / Promos: Hosting a webinar, running a sale, or attending a conference? Create a Highlight to promote it. Just remember to delete or update it once the event is over.
  • Tips & Tricks: Share valuable advice related to your industry. A financial advisor could have a "Saving Tips" Highlight, while a fitness coach could have one for "5-Min Workouts." This positions you as an expert.
