How to Use Tailwind for Pinterest

By Spencer Lanoue

Pinterest can drive incredible, high-intent traffic to your website, but keeping it fed with a steady stream of fresh content feels like a full-time job. This is where Tailwind, an official Pinterest Marketing Partner, changes everything. This article walks you through exactly how to use Tailwind to automate your Pinterest strategy, save hours of work, and grow your reach while you focus on other parts of your business.

What Exactly is Tailwind and Why Use It?

Think of Tailwind as your personal Pinterest assistant. It’s a tool designed to help you schedule Pins at the most optimal times, discover new content, connect with other creators in your niche, and analyze your performance with data that goes deeper than Pinterest’s native analytics. While posting manually is free, it’s also time-consuming and inefficient. If you're serious about using Pinterest for business, Tailwind provides the leverage you need.

Here’s what makes it so powerful:

  • It Saves You an Immense Amount of Time: Instead of pinning multiple times throughout the day, you can batch-schedule hundreds of Pins in a single session. This is the single biggest benefit - getting hours of your week back.
  • It Pins at the Smartest Times: Tailwind’s SmartSchedule analyzes when your specific audience is most active on Pinterest and creates an optimized schedule for you. This means your Pins go live when they’re most likely to be seen and engaged with.
  • It Extends Your Reach with Communities: Tailwind Communities are groups of creators in similar niches who agree to share each other's content. It’s an effective way to get your Pins in front of new, relevant audiences.
  • It Provides Actionable Analytics: Understand which Pins, boards, and content types are actually driving results. This data helps you stop guessing and start creating content that works.

Getting Started: Your 5-Minute Setup

Getting your Tailwind account up and running is fast and straightforward. Don’t worry about a long, complicated setup, you’ll be ready to schedule your first Pin in minutes.

Follow these quick steps:

  1. Sign Up with Pinterest: Go to the Tailwind website and choose to sign up with your Pinterest account. Because Tailwind is an official partner, this is a secure and seamless process.
  2. Authorize Your Account: You’ll be prompted to give Tailwind permission to access your Pinterest account. This allows the tool to publish Pins on your behalf and pull performance data.
  3. Install the Browser Extension: This is a non-negotiable step. Tailwind will prompt you to install its browser extension (available for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari). This little button makes scheduling content from your blog, online store, or anywhere on the web incredibly easy.
  4. Set Your Industry: Give Tailwind a bit of information about your niche. This helps it recommend relevant Communities and content for you later on.

Once you’ve done this, you’re officially in. The next step is creating the schedule that will power your entire strategy.

Create Your Perfect Pinning Schedule with SmartSchedule

One of Tailwind's most valuable features is the SmartSchedule. Instead of you guessing the best times to post, Tailwind builds a custom schedule based on when your followers are most active. This takes the guesswork out of timing and maximizes the visibility of every Pin.

How to Set Up Your SmartSchedule

Inside your Tailwind dashboard, navigate to Publisher > Your Schedule. When you first get started, it will be empty. Tell Tailwind roughly how many times you want to Pin per day. A good starting point is between 15 and 25 pins - this might sound like a lot, but it includes both your content and content from others.

Click the "Generate New Schedule" button, and Tailwind will instantly create a posting queue with optimized time slots, all a light green color. These are what Tailwind identifies as the best engagement opportunities. You can easily add more slots by clicking the "Add Timeslot" button or delete slots that don't work for you. Consistency is more important than volume, so choose a number of daily Pins you can comfortably maintain.

The Core Workflow: Scheduling Pins Like a Pro

With your schedule ready, it's time to start filling your queue. There are a few ways to schedule Pins, but the browser extension makes the process fast and intuitive.

Method 1: Scheduling with the Browser Extension (The Easiest Way)

This is the scheduling method you'll likely use most often.

  1. Find an Image to Pin: Go to one of your blog posts, a product page, or any website with Pin-worthy visuals.
  2. Click the Tailwind Icon: Click the small blue Tailwind icon in your browser's toolbar. A pop-up will appear, showing all the pinnable images from that page.
  3. Select Your Image(s): Click on the image (or multiple images) you want to schedule. A blue border will appear around your selections. Click the blue "Go Schedule" button in the bottom right.
  4. Write Your Description and Choose Your Boards: A new window will open with your selected images as Drafts. This is where you work your magic. For each image:
    • Choose Your Board(s): Start typing the name of the Pinterest board where you want the Pin to go. You can select multiple boards.
    • Write a Keyword-Rich Description: Don't skip this! A good Pin description tells Pinterest what your content is about. Use relevant keywords that people would search for to find your content.
  5. Add to Queue: Once you’ve selected your boards and written a description, just click the green "Add to Queue Now" button. The Pin will automatically be added to the next available time slot in your SmartSchedule.

Method 2: Uploading Pins Directly in Tailwind

If you've created a new Pin graphic in a tool like Canva, you can upload it directly to Tailwind. From your dashboard, go to Publisher > Create > Upload images/video. From there, the process is the same: choose your boards, write your description, and add it to your queue.

Power-User Tip: Use Board Lists and Intervals

Manually selecting multiple boards for every Pin gets tedious. That’s where Board Lists come in. Board Lists let you group similar boards together. For example, if you're a food blogger, you could create a list called "Healthy Dinner Recipes" that includes boards like "Weeknight Meals," "Low-Carb Dinners," and "Healthy Chicken Recipes."

When you schedule a Pin, you can select that list instead of typing each board name individually. It's a massive time-saver.

Combine this with the Interval feature for truly optimized pinning. When you use an Interval, Tailwind will space out the pins to your selected boards. Instead of dropping the same Pin on ten boards at once (which Pinterest considers spammy), you can set an interval of, say, 2 days. Tailwind will then post that Pin to the first board in your list, wait two days, post it to the second board, wait another two days, and so on. This keeps your content distribution looking natural and helps your pins get seen by different audiences over time.

Supercharge Your Reach with Tailwind Communities

Tailwind Communities are arguably one of the most powerful features for growing your reach on Pinterest. Think of them as collaborative groups where you and other creators in a similar niche share each other’s content.

The rules are simple: for every Pin of your own that you add to a Community, you're expected to share someone else’s Pin from that Community to your own boards. This reciprocity is what makes it work so well. Your content gets seen by the engaged audiences of other, bigger creators, driving new traffic your way.

Finding and Joining Communities

  1. Navigate to the Communities tab on the left-hand menu.
  2. Click on "Find a Community" and search for keywords related to your niche (e.g., "social media marketing," "home decor," "vegan food").
  3. Preview the Communities that pop up. Look for ones with active members and a good number of shares and repins.
  4. Read the Community rules and, if it looks like a good fit, click to request to join. Most are auto-approved.

How to Use Communities Effectively

When you schedule a Pin in Tailwind, you’ll see an "Add to Communities" button next to the "Add to Queue" button. Click it, select the relevant Communities you've joined, and your Pin will be submitted for others to share.

To fulfill your side of the bargain, spend 10-15 minutes each week browsing your Communities. Find high-quality, relevant Pins from others and schedule them to your own boards. This not only fulfills your obligation but also provides great filler content to keep your own schedule looking diverse and interesting to your followers.

Using Tailwind Analytics to Refine Your Strategy

You can't improve what you don't measure. Tailwind Analytics gives you clear insights into what’s working so you can double down on your most effective strategies.

Focus on these key areas:

  • Profile Performance: Get a big-picture view of your follower growth, number of Pins, and repins over time. It’s great for tracking overall progress.
  • Board Insights: This report shows you which of your personal boards are generating the most engagement. If you see your "Content Marketing Tips" board has a much higher repin rate than others, that's a signal to create more content on that topic and pin it there.
  • Pin Inspector: This is a goldmine. The Pin Inspector lets you see your most successful individual Pins based on repins or comments. Identify the common threads - are they a certain style of graphic? A certain type of topic? Use this data to inform your future Pin designs and content creation.

Implementing Tailwind transforms your Pinterest efforts from a time-consuming manual task into a streamlined, automated growth engine. By leveraging its SmartSchedule, browser extension, and collaborative Communities, you can consistently put your content in front of the right audience at the right time, all in a fraction of the time it would take to do manually.
