How to Track Instagram Analytics

By Spencer Lanoue

Trying to grow your Instagram without looking at your analytics is like trying to drive to a new city without a map - you might get there eventually, but you'll probably get lost, waste a lot of time, and wonder why you aren't making any progress. This guide will walk you through exactly how to track your Instagram analytics, understand what the numbers mean, and use that data to create better content that genuinely connects with your audience.

Why Bother with Instagram Analytics?

Diving into data can feel intimidating, but understanding your Instagram analytics is the single most powerful thing you can do to accelerate your growth. Think of it less as a math test and more as a cheat sheet for your content strategy. When you consistently review your performance, you can answer critical questions that separate stagnant accounts from thriving ones:

  • Who is my audience, really? Get beyond assumptions and see their actual age, gender, and location.
  • What kind of content do they love most? Discover which posts earn the most saves, shares, and comments so you can make more of what works.
  • When is the best time to post? Reach your followers when they’re most active and ready to engage.
  • Is my strategy actually working? Track your follower growth and engagement over time to see the real impact of your efforts.

Data eliminates guesswork. It tells you exactly what to do more of, what to do less of, and how to build a stronger connection with the people who follow you.

First Step: Your Account Must Be a Creator or Business Profile

Before you can get access to any of this valuable data, you need to tell Instagram you’re using the platform professionally. Personal accounts do not have access to Instagram Insights. If you haven’t already, switching is free, easy, and only takes a minute.

How to Switch to a Professional Account:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Scroll down to the "For professionals" section and tap Account type and tools.
  4. Tap Switch to professional account.
  5. You’ll be prompted to choose a category that best describes what you do (e.g., Artist, Blogger, Digital Creator, Restaurant). Pick the one that fits best.
  6. Next, you'll be asked if you are a Creator or a Business.
    • Creator: Best for public figures, content producers, artists, and influencers.
    • Business: Best for retailers, local businesses, brands, and service providers. This option gives you access to a physical address on your profile.

Once you’ve made the switch, Instagram will immediately start gathering data for your account. You won't see historical data from before you switched, but all your analytics going forward will be collected.

Where to Find Your Instagram Analytics

Instagram makes your data accessible in a few different places, depending on whether you want a broad overview or details on a specific piece of content.

Your Main Analytics Dashboard (Professional Dashboard)

This is your command center for all account-level data. This is where you can get a bird’s-eye view of your performance over time.

  1. Navigate to your profile page.
  2. Tap on the Professional dashboard link right below your bio.
  3. Under "Account insights," tap See all.

Here you’ll find a summary of your performance, typically covering the last 30 days (though you can customize the date range). This dashboard gives you high-level statistics like Accounts Reached, Accounts Engaged, and Total Followers.

Analytics for a Specific Post, Reel, or Story

Sometimes you need to know how a single piece of content performed. To do this, go directly to the content itself.

  • For Feed Posts & Reels: Open the post or Reel and tap View insights below the media on the left-hand side.
  • For Stories: Open an active Story and swipe up. If the Story has expired, you can find it in your Archive, where you can still view its insights.

This granular view is perfect for spotting successful posts and understanding why they resonated with your audience.

Breaking Down the Key Instagram Metrics You Need to Track

Okay, you know where to find the data. But what do all these terms - Reach, Impressions, Engagement - actually mean? Let's clarify the metrics that matter most.

Audience Metrics: Who Are You Talking To?

These metrics help you build a mental picture of the people following you, which is essential for creating relevant content.

  • Follower Growth: The change in your follower count over a specific period. This is a top-level indicator of whether your content strategy is attracting new people to your community. Consistent growth is a clear win.
  • Follower Demographics: Found in your main dashboard, this shows you your followers' top locations (cities and countries), their age range, and their gender. A baker in Austin, Texas could use this info to create content specific to local events.
  • Most Active Times: This genius chart shows you the days of the week and the hours of the day when your followers are most active on Instagram. Posting during these peak times can give your content an immediate visibility boost.

Content Performance Metrics: How Is Your Content Doing?

These metrics tell you how people are interacting with your posts and Reels directly.

  • Reach vs. Impressions: These are easily confused but have a critical difference.
    • Reach: The total number of unique accounts that saw your content.
    • Impressions: The total number of times your content was seen. Impressions will always be higher than or equal to Reach because a single person can see your post multiple times. High impressions with low reach could mean your current followers are seeing your content repeatedly, but you aren't reaching new people.
  • Engagement Rate: This is a powerful metric for understanding how compelling your content is relative to the size of the audience it reached. An account with 1,000 engaged followers is often more valuable than one with 10,000 passive ones. You can calculate it like this: (Likes + Comments + Saves) / Reach * 100 There are several ways to calculate it, but using Reach is generally the most accurate method.
  • Saves: When someone saves your post, they are bookmarking it to come back to later. This is often called a "super like" because it signals your content is highly valuable or informative - think recipes, tutorials, tips, or inspirational quotes.
  • Shares: Shares (via DMs or Story reshares) are a strong indicator that your content is resonating so deeply that people want to pass it on to their friends. This is digital word-of-mouth and a major driver for reaching new audiences.

Format-Specific Metrics: Stories and Reels

Different formats have their own unique success signals.

  • For Reels:
    • Views/Plays: The total number of times your Reel has been played.
    • Watch Time & Audience Retention: These are huge for the algorithm. High watch time and a smooth retention curve tell Instagram your Reel is holding viewers' attention, which makes the platform more likely to show it to new people. The intro hook is everything!
  • For Stories:
    • Replies: Direct responses to your Story. An excellent way to measure direct connection and start conversations.
    • Taps Forward / Taps Back / Exits: Taps Forward shows how many people skipped to the next slide. Exits show how many people left Stories entirely after seeing yours. Consistently high Exit rates on a particular type of content is a sign that it’s not connecting. Taps Back, however, can be a great sign people wanted to re-watch your slide!

Turning Instagram Analytics into an Actionable Strategy

Data is pointless if you don't do anything with it. Here’s how to translate those numbers into smarter decisions for your content.

1. Find Your Rockstar Content and Make More of It

Go to your Insights dashboard and look at your top posts, Reels, and Stories from the last three to six months. Sort them by Reach, Engagement, and then Saves. Ask yourself:

  • What topics were these posts about?
  • What format did I use? (e.g., Carousel, speaking-to-camera Reel, a simple graphic)
  • What was the caption style or call to action?

Look for patterns. If your top three saved posts are all quick tutorial videos, that’s your audience telling you they want more educational content. Turn that winning format into a recurring content series.

2. Post When Your Followers Are Actually Listening

There's no single "best time to post on Instagram." The only best time is the one that’s right for your specific audience. Use the "Most Active Times" data in your dashboard to schedule your most important posts during peak hours. If your followers are overwhelmingly online from 6 PM to 9 PM, avoid posting at 9 AM, even if another marketing blog told you to.

3. Speak Your Audience's Language

Use your demographics data to tailor your voice and content. If you discover a large portion of your audience is in the 18-24 age range, you can confidently use trending sounds and more casual, meme-friendly language. If they're mainly in the 35-44 bracket, you might stick to clearer, more professional language and focus on topics that solve their specific problems.

4. Set Measurable Goals to Track Progress

Don’t just glance at your analytics. Use them to set simple, practical goals. For example:

  • "This month, I want to increase my average Reel views by 15% by focusing on stronger opening hooks."
  • "I want to grow my follower count by 100 new followers this month by posting one high-value, shareable Carousel per week."

Having a goal turns data-checking from a chore into a focused part of your growth plan.
