How to Share a Comment on an Instagram Story

Ever see a perfect comment on your Instagram post and wish you could put it in the spotlight for all your followers to see? Sharing user comments directly to your Instagram Story is a powerful way to highlight praise, answer questions, and spark conversations with your community. This guide will walk you through exactly how to do it step-by-step and provide some simple strategies for making your shared comments a valuable part of your content plan.

Why Should You Share Comments on Your Instagram Stories?

Before jumping into the "how," let's quickly cover the "why." Sharing comments isn't just a fun feature, it’s a smart strategy for brands and creators. It’s one of the simplest ways to leverage user-generated content without asking your audience to do extra work. A great comment is content you can repurpose.

  • Builds Powerful Social Proof: When a follower leaves a glowing comment about your product, service, or content, sharing it to your Story acts as an instant testimonial. Potential customers trust reviews from real people far more than polished brand advertising.
  • Answers Common Questions: If someone asks a great question in the comments, chances are others are wondering the same thing. Sharing the question and your answer to your Story creates a mini, user-generated FAQ that benefits everyone.
  • Increases Engagement and Community: Highlighting a follower's comment makes them feel seen and valued. This simple act of recognition encourages others to participate, knowing their comments might get featured, too.
  • Starts New Conversations: You can use a thought-provoking comment as a jumping-off point for a broader discussion, adding a poll, quiz, or question sticker to your Story to get more people involved.

The Simple "Sticker Method": How to Share Any Comment to a Story

Instagram doesn't have a direct "Share Comment to Story" button, but the workaround is incredibly easy and gives you full creative control. All you need is the ability to take a screenshot and use the sticker feature in Stories. Here’s how it works.

Step 1: Find and Screenshot the Comment You Want to Share

Scroll through the comments on one of your posts and find one you want to feature. It could be nice feedback, a funny remark, or an interesting question. Once you’ve located it, take a screenshot on your phone.

Pro-Tip: Crop the screenshot right away to focus only on the specific comment. Trim out the surrounding clutter of other comments, the keyboard, and the menu buttons at the bottom of the screen. A tighter crop looks cleaner and more professional.

Step 2: Open Your Instagram Story Camera

Navigate to your Instagram home screen and either swipe right or tap the plus icon (+) in the top navigation bar and select "Story." This opens the canvas where you’ll build your masterpiece.

Step 3: Choose or Create Your Story Background

This is where you set the scene for your comment share. Don't just post the screenshot on a default background. You have a few options:

  • Choose an Existing Photo or Video: Pick a visually appealing image or video from your camera roll that relates to the comment. A product photo, a behind-the-scenes shot, or even a brand-aligned stock image can work perfectly.
  • Create a Solid Color Background: Tap the "Create" mode (the "Aa" icon) in the Story camera. Tap the colored circle in the bottom right corner to cycle through different solid and gradient backgrounds until you find one that matches your brand aesthetic.
  • Use the Original Post's Blurry Background: Want a more direct connection? Share the original post to your Story first by tapping the paper airplane icon under the post and selecting "Add to story." Instagram will generate a branded background. You can then add your comment screenshot on top of this.

Step 4: Add the Comment Screenshot Using the Photo Sticker

This is the key step. Once your background is ready, tap the sticker icon (the smiling square face) at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you see the "Photo Sticker" option (it usually shows a small preview of your most recent photos in a circle with a picture-stack icon). Tap it.

Your phone’s camera roll will open up. Select the cropped screenshot of the comment you prepared in Step 1. Voila! The comment now appears as a sticker on top of your Story background.

Step 5: Resize, Position, and Customize the Sticker

Your work isn’t done just yet. With two fingers, you can pinch to resize the comment sticker, making it larger or smaller. Drag it around the screen until you find the perfect position. Be mindful of Instagram's UI elements - avoid placing it too close to the top (where your profile picture is) or the bottom (where the reply bar is).

You can also tap the sticker once to change its shape, giving it rounded corners or turning it into a circle or star. This little touch can help it pop and look more intentionally designed.

Step 6: Add Context, Because Context is Everything

A screenshot of a comment by itself is just... a screenshot. It lacks meaning. You need to tell your audience why you're sharing it. Use Instagram's creative tools to add context:

  • Add Text: Use the text tool ("Aa") to write a reply, add commentary, or ask a follow-up question. For example, "This just made our day!" or "Great question! Here's the answer..."
  • Tag the User: If you feel it’s appropriate, you can tag the commenter’s handle (@username) to give them a shout-out. This is a great way to show appreciation, but always consider their privacy first (more on that below).
  • Use GIFs and Emojis: A simple animated GIF or a well-placed emoji can convey your reaction instantly. Something like a "Thank You" or a mind-blown GIF can add a lot of personality.
  • Add Interactive Elements: Make your story engaging by adding a Poll for follower opinions or a Question box to solicit more feedback.

Step 7: Share Your Story!

Once you’re happy with how everything looks, hit the "Your Story" button in the bottom left corner to share it with your followers. And just like that, you’ve successfully turned a simple comment into a piece of engaging content.

Best Practices: How to Share Comments Like a Pro

Knowing the technical steps is one thing, but using this feature effectively is what sets great social media managers apart. Here are a few best practices to keep in mind.

1. Respect Your Followers' Privacy

Not everyone wants their comment and profile picture broadcasted to your entire audience. Before sharing, consider cropping or using the draw tool to gently scribble out the username and profile picture. You can still give credit by saying, "Great feedback from one of our followers!" This lets you share the message without putting the person on the spot.

2. Always Add Your Voice

Never just post the screenshot and leave it blank. You are the curator. Your audience wants to know what you think. Add a caption like "We think so too!" or "Couldn't have said it better ourselves." This turns a passive share into an active brand statement.

3. Turn Rave Reviews into Social Proof

Create a dedicated Story Highlight for customer testimonials called "Reviews," "Love," or "Community Board." Every time you get a great comment about how much someone loves your product, share it to your Story and save it to this Highlight. It becomes a permanent and powerful collection of authentic social proof that new followers can flick through at any time.

4. Keep It On-Brand and Visually Appealing

Consistency is key. Use your brand colors for the background or text annotations. Choose fonts that align with your brand's style. Treating these shares as a core part of your content ensures they look professional and cohesive, not like a random, clunky screenshot on a messy background.

Tip About What Not to Do

A quick word of caution: avoid sharing negative comments just to get into a public argument. Defending your brand publicly can often backfire and make you appear unprofessional. Handle criticism gracefully and privately through DMs whenever possible. If you must address public feedback, do it thoughtfully and focus on solutions, not on being right.

Final Thoughts

Sharing an Instagram comment to your Story is a simple yet highly effective way to build social proof, foster community, and create engaging, low-lift content. By following the screenshot-and-sticker method and pairing it with a clear strategy, you can turn your comments section into a valuable source of inspiration for your Stories.

Finding great comments and questions across all your platforms is the first step, but it gets chaotic fast. For my team, that's precisely why we built the integrated inbox in Postbase.
