How to Send an Instagram Link

Sending an Instagram link should be simple, but with so many different types of content - profiles, posts, Reels, and Stories - it can be surprisingly tricky to find the right button. This guide will show you exactly how to share a link to just about anything on Instagram, whether you're sending your profile to a new connection or a hilarious Reel to a group chat. We'll cover every common scenario with clear, step-by-step instructions.

Why Sharing Instagram Links Matters

Before we get into the "how," let's briefly touch on the "why." Sharing an Instagram link is a fundamental social media skill that fuels connection, collaboration, and growth. For personal use, it’s how we share hilarious memes, inspiring posts, and interesting profiles with friends and family. For businesses, creators, and marketers, it's even more powerful. You might share:

  • Your profile link on your business card, email signature, or other social media bios to funnel followers to your account.
  • A link to a specific post in a newsletter to drive traffic to a product announcement or promotion.
  • A viral Reel link with a collaborator to propose a similar idea for a partnership.
  • A brand’s profile link with your team to showcase a competitor’s excellent social media strategy.

Mastering this simple action opens up endless opportunities to network, market your brand, and share content that resonates. Now, let’s get to the specifics.

How to Find and Share Your Own Instagram Profile Link

This is probably the most common link you'll share. You need it for your website, email signature, and bios on other networks like TikTok or LinkedIn. Instagram offers a couple of quick ways to grab it.

Using the Share Profile Feature (Easiest Method)

This method is quick, visual, and great for an in-person share or for getting a direct URL.

On the Mobile App:

  1. Open your Instagram app and go to your profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
  2. On your profile page, look for the "Share profile" button, located a few buttons underneath your bio.
  3. Tapping this will bring up a pop-up with your personal QR code. From here you have two options:
    • Share Profile: Tap this to open your phone’s native share menu. You can send your link directly to apps like Messages, WhatsApp, and Slack or send via Airdrop.
    • Copy Link: Tap this to simply copy the URL of your profile to your clipboard. You can then paste it anywhere you like.

Manually Creating Your Profile Link

Don't want to dig through the app? There's a much simpler way: you can just type it out yourself. Your Instagram profile link is always the same simple format:

https://www.instagram.com/[yourusername]/

Just replace `[yourusername]` with your actual Instagram handle. For example, if your username is @coffeeandcouches, your link is:

https://www.instagram.com/coffeeandcouches/

This method is perfect if you’re working on a desktop or just need to remember your link off the top of your head. It’s clean, easy, and you don’t need to open the app to get it.

How to Share Someone Else’s Profile Link

Found a creator you love or a business you want to recommend? Sharing someone else's profile is just as easy as sharing your own.

  1. Navigate to the Instagram profile of the person or brand you want to share.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. A menu will slide up from the bottom. Just like with your own profile, you’ll see several options:
    • Share Profile: Tapping this opens the share menu to send the link directly to another app.
    • Copy Profile URL: This copies the link to your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere you like.

This is extremely useful for sending recommendations to friends or flagging interesting accounts for your marketing team to watch.

How to Share a Link to a Specific Instagram Post

Sometimes you don't need to share a whole profile - just one incredible photo, carousel, or video. Sharing a post-specific link directs people right to that piece of content, making it perfect for driving engagement to a particular campaign or announcement.

From the Mobile App:

  1. Find the post you want to share (it can be on your feed, the explore page, or a profile).
  2. Look for the paper airplane icon directly underneath the post, next to the comment and like buttons.
  3. When you tap the paper airplane, a menu will pop up. At the bottom of this menu, you’ll see a row of icons. Here you can choose Copy Link or select Share To... to send the link via another app.

This method drops the direct URL onto your clipboard, which you can paste into an email, a blog post, or anywhere else you need to direct people’s attention.

From a Desktop Browser:

Sharing from a desktop is even more straightforward.

  1. Navigate to the post you want to share on the Instagram website.
  2. Once the post is open, simply copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar at the top of the window.

That's it! The URL in the address bar is the permanent link to that specific post.

How to Share an Instagram Reel Link (It's All About Video!)

Reels are the engine of Instagram growth and engagement right now. Knowing how to quickly share them is essential, whether you’re sharing your own creation to get more views or sending a funny one to a friend. The process is very similar to sharing a post.

  1. Open the Reel you want to share so it is playing in full-screen view.
  2. On the right-hand side of the screen, you'll see a small column of icons (like, comment, etc.). Tap the paper airplane icon.
  3. Just like with a regular post, a menu will appear. You'll see several options at the bottom of the Share menu, such as "Copy Link" or "Share To..." where you can also send the Reel to other users directly in-app. Select "Copy Link" to copy the URL to your phone's clipboard. Just paste the link wherever it needs to go.

How to Share an Instagram Story Link

Sharing Stories is a bit different because of their temporary 24-hour nature. After the Story expires, the link will no longer work, unless it's been saved as a Highlight.

Sharing Your Own Story:

  1. Open your own active Story by tapping your profile picture.
  2. While your Story is playing, tap the three dots (•••) in the bottom-right corner that say "More...".
  3. A menu will appear with several options. Tap "Copy Link" to grab the URL.

You can send this link to anyone, but remember, they’ll only be able to view it as long as the Story is live. This is great for promoting a flash sale or a limited-time Q&A session.

Sharing Someone Else’s Story:

You can also share someone else's Story if their account is public.

  1. While viewing their Story, tap the paper airplane icon in the bottom-right corner.
  2. You won’t see a "Copy Link" option here. Instead, you'll be greeted with a menu that allows you to send the Story to another user via Direct Message.

This keeps the sharing ecosystem more controlled within Instagram, pushing you to send temporary content via DMs rather than permanent links that will eventually break.
