How to Name Your Highlights on Instagram Blank

By Spencer Lanoue

A completely blank name under your Instagram Highlights creates that clean, minimalist look you’ve seen on professional profiles. But if you’ve ever tried to do it, you quickly find that Instagram won’t let you save a Highlight with an empty name or just a regular space. This guide will show you exactly how to get that invisible text using a simple copy-and-paste trick and explain how to troubleshoot any issues along the way.

Why Bother with a Blank Highlight Name?

Before getting into the how-to, let's touch on the why. Removing the text beneath your Instagram Highlights isn't just a gimmick, it’s a strategic design choice that offers a few real benefits for your brand's profile aesthetic.

First and foremost, it creates a cleaner, more professional appearance. When you remove the text, you shift the entire visual focus to your highlight covers. This elevates your profile from a casual feed to a well-curated digital storefront or portfolio. For brands with a strong visual identity - like designers, photographers, artists, and aesthetic-focused e-commerce stores - this decluttered look is powerful. It lets your branding and imagery do all the talking. Instead of reading "FAQ," "Shop," or "About," visitors immediately see beautiful, cohesive icons representing those categories.

It also simplifies the user experience. With high-quality, universally understood icons on your covers, text becomes redundant. A shopping cart icon is instantly recognizable as "Shop," just as a person icon can signify "About Us." This removes visual noise and allows users to navigate your profile's key information points quickly and intuitively. Ultimately, a blank highlight name is a small detail, but it’s one of those subtle tweaks that can make a profile feel intentionally designed, polished, and premium.

The Easiest Method: Copy and Paste an Invisible Character

The secret to getting a blank highlight name isn't a complex hack. It's simply about using a special character that looks invisible to us but is recognized by Instagram as valid text. The most reliable character for this is the “Braille Pattern Blank” (U+2800). Think of it as a character that takes up space without rendering a visible symbol.

Your phone’s keyboard won’t have this character, so you just need to copy it from here and paste it into Instagram.

Step 1: Copy the Invisible Space

Just press and hold inside the brackets below and tap "Copy." Make sure you only copy the character inside the box, not the brackets themselves.

Step 2: Edit Your Instagram Highlight

Now, open Instagram and head to your profile page.

  • Find the Highlight you want to rename and press and hold your finger on it.
  • A menu will pop up. Select "Edit Highlight."
  • You'll be taken to the edit screen where you can see the highlight's cover, name, and the Stories included in it.

Step 3: Paste the Invisible Character as the Name

This is where the magic happens.

  • Tap on the "Name" field where your current highlight title is.
  • Delete all the existing text. Make sure the field is completely empty.
  • Tap once more in the now-empty name field, and a "Paste" option should appear.
  • Select "Paste" to add the invisible character you copied earlier.
  • Important: The name field will look completely empty after you paste. That's exactly what you want!

Step 4: Save Your Changes

Once you’ve pasted the character, tap "Done" in the top-right corner. Instagram will accept the "blank" name and save your Highlight. When you go back to your profile, the text beneath that Highlight cover will be gone, leaving you with a clean, icon-only look.

You can repeat this process for all of your Highlights to create a totally cohesive and minimalist aesthetic on your profile.

Using Different Invisible Characters (Good for Troubleshooting)

Sometimes, for various reasons related to specific phone models or operating systems, the Braille character might not work as intended. If you've tried the one above and are running into issues, here are a few other 'blank' characters you can try copying and pasting instead. Use the same steps as outlined above.

  • Hangul Filler: [ㅤ] Works well on many devices when the Braille character fails.
  • Mongolian Vowel Separator: [᠎] An older, less common option that can still get the job done.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

This trick is usually straightforward, but if it's not working for you, here are a few common hiccups and their solutions.

"Instagram Reverts to the Old Name!"

If you hit "Done" and your old highlight name just reappears, it's often a simple app cache issue. This means Instagram hasn’t quite registered the change.

  • Solution: The quickest fix is to completely close out the Instagram app and reopen it. If that doesn't work, try restarting your phone. This simple step often clears any glitches and allows the change to push through correctly.

"I See a Little Box or a '?' instead of a Blank Space"

This happens when your device's font library doesn't recognize the specific invisible character you've pasted. It's essentially showing you a placeholder for an unknown character.

  • Solution: This is an easy fix! Simply go back to the section above and try copying one of the different invisible character options. The Hangul Filler, for example, is a great alternative to the Braille Blank character. One of them is likely to be compatible with your phone's operating system.

"Instagram Won't Let Me Click 'Done'"

If the "Done" button is greyed out after you paste the character, it usually means something else is in the text field besides the invisible character itself. This most commonly happens if an accidental regular space (from the spacebar) was pasted along with it.

  • Solution: Go back to the name field in the "Edit Highlight" screen. Tap and hold to select all and delete everything. Then, very carefully, copy only the invisible character from this article again and paste it in one more time. Nine times out of ten, this resolves the issue.

Complete the Look: Designing Your Highlight Covers

Making your highlight names blank is only half the battle. This strategy works best when it's paired with beautifully designed and cohesive Highlight covers. With no text to rely on, your cover icons need to be clear, on-brand, and instantly understandable to anyone visiting your profile for the first time.

Tips for Creating Standout Highlight Covers:

  • Keep it Simple: Since the icons will be small circles on your profile, complexity is your enemy. Opt for simple, bold icons or symbols that are easy to see and identify at a glance. For instance, a microphone for "Podcast," a plane for "Travel," or a shopping bag for "New Arrivals."
  • Stay On-Brand: Your Highlight covers are a permanent part of your brand's digital presence. Make sure they align with your overall brand aesthetic. Use your brand's color palette and fonts (if you choose to include text on the covers themselves). Tools like Canva offer thousands of templates and icons that you can customize with your specific brand colors.
  • Ensure High Quality and Correct Sizing: Create your highlight cover designs using the dimensions of an Instagram Story: 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels tall. Even though the cover will be displayed as a circle, designing it in the full Story dimension means it won't be blurry or pixelated when someone taps on it. Center your icon perfectly so it won't get oddly cropped by the circular frame on your profile.

By pairing your new blank Highlight names with strong, coherent cover designs, you’ll create a professional, polished, and effective navigation bar right at the top of your Instagram profile. It's a small change that makes a huge impact.

Final Thoughts

Creating a clean, no-name look for your Instagram Highlights is a quick and effective way to elevate your profile’s aesthetic. By simply copying and pasting a special invisible character, you can shift the focus entirely to your well-designed Highlight covers, making your page feel more curated and professional.
