How to Make a Collection on Instagram

By Spencer Lanoue
October 31, 2025

Instagram's bookmark button is more than just a way to save a cool post for later, it's the gateway to Collections, one of the platform's most underrated organizational tools. This guide will walk you through exactly how to create and use Collections, moving from the basic steps to powerful strategies for building your brand. We'll cover everything from saving your first post to creating mood boards, tracking competitors, and organizing user-generated content.

What Exactly Are Instagram Collections and Why Should You Bother?

Think of Instagram Collections as your private, personalized Pinterest boards built right into the app. When you save a post by tapping the bookmark icon, you have the option to file it away into a specific, named folder - that's a Collection. They are completely private (unless you choose to make a new collaborative one), so nobody else can see what you've saved or how you've organized it.

For personal use, the benefits are obvious. You can create Collections for:

  • Recipes to Try: A go-to folder for meal inspiration.
  • Dream Destinations: All your travel wanderlust in one spot.
  • Home Decor Ideas: Curate the aesthetic for your next room makeover.
  • Workout Routines: Save fitness tutorials and circuits for the gym.

But for creators, marketers, and business owners, Collections transform into a powerful strategic tool. Instead of just saving posts randomly, you can build a systematic library of ideas and intelligence. They allow you to organize inspiration, monitor your market, and gather assets - all without leaving the Instagram app or relying on endless screenshots cluttering your phone.

How to Make Your First Instagram Collection: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting started is simple. Once you know the steps, it'll become second nature. There are two main ways to create a new collection: right when you save a new post, or from your existing saved items.

Method 1: Creating a Collection from a New Post

This is the most common way you'll create collections. You're scrolling your feed, and you find something perfect you want to keep.

  1. Find a Post to Save: Scroll through your feed, Explore page, or a profile until you find a photo, video, or Reel you want to save.
  2. Tap the Bookmark Icon: Located at the bottom right corner of the post. Once you tap it, the post is instantly saved to a general "All Posts" folder.
  3. Select "Save to Collection": Immediately after you tap the bookmark, a small black bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap on "Save to Collection." If you miss it, don't worry - you can tap and hold the bookmark icon instead to bring up the same menu.
  4. Create Your New Collection: A screen will pop up showing any existing collections. Tap the + icon to create a new one.
  5. Name Your Collection: Give it a descriptive name. Something like "Marketing Ideas" or "UGC to Reshare" works much better than "Collection 1." Tap "Done," and your post will be added.

Method 2: Organizing Your Existing Saved Posts

Maybe you've been saving posts for years without organizing them. It's not too late to bring some order to the chaos.

  1. Navigate to Your Saved Posts: Go to your Instagram profile. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner, then tap "Saved."
  2. Create a New Collection: You'll see all your saved posts in the "All Posts" tab. To create a new group, tap the + icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Posts for the Collection: Tap on all the posts you want to add to your new collection. A blue checkmark will appear on each one you select.
  4. Name It: Tap "Next," give your collection a clear, useful name, and tap "Done." You've just created a new, organized folder from your previously unsorted saves.

How to Find, Manage, and Share Your Collections

Once you've started building your library, you'll need to know how to access, edit, and collaborate on it.

Finding Your Collections

Finding your collections is always the same. Just go to your Profile >, Menu Icon (☰) >, Saved. The first screen you see will be all your collections, displayed with their cover images and names.

Editing a Collection

You can change the name or the cover photo of any collection you've made.

  • To change the name: Open the collection, tap the three dots icon (...) in the top-right corner, and select "Edit Collection." From there, you can change the name.
  • To change the cover image: From that same "Edit Collection" screen, tap "Change Cover." You can then choose any post already in that collection to be the new visual thumbnail. This is great for quickly identifying collections at a glance.

Adding or Removing Posts

To add more posts later, simply save a post and choose an existing collection instead of creating a new one. To remove a post, open the collection, tap the post, and then tap the filled-in bookmark icon to unsave it. It will be removed from that collection and your general "All Posts" location.

Using Collaborative Collections

Instagram allows you to share and build collections with other people. This is brilliant for teamwork, planning with clients, or just sharing ideas with a friend.

To start a collaborative collection:

  1. Create a new collection or go into an existing one.
  2. In the top section of the collection, you'll see a toggle for "Collaborative." Turn it on.
  3. You can then choose friends to invite. Once they accept, they'll be able to view all the posts in the collection and add new ones of their own.

This is perfect for agency teams gathering inspiration for a new client project or marketing teams developing a campaign mood board together.

Beyond Bookmarking: Smart Ways to Use Collections for Your Brand

This is where Instagram Collections elevate from a simple feature to a core part of an effective social media strategy. Instead of just hoarding pretty pictures, you can use Collections with intention.

1. Create an "Inspiration" Swipe File

Every great creator needs a source of inspiration. Create different collections for different types of content you want to make.

  • Reels Audio & Trends: Found a trending sound you want to use? Save the Reel to an "Audio to Use" collection.
  • Caption Ideas: See a post with a great storytelling caption or a clever hook? Save it to a "Caption Angles" collection.
  • Graphic Design Styles: Collect posts that match the aesthetic you're aiming for. Great for briefing a designer or refining your own brand's look.

2. Build a User-Generated Content (UGC) Goldmine

When a customer tags you in a post featuring your product, that's free marketing content. Don't let it disappear. Immediately save that post to a "UGC Library" collection. When you're looking for authentic content to reshare in your Stories or feed, your collection is there waiting for you, full of your happiest customers.

3. Conduct Competitor Analysis

Want to keep an eye on what your industry rivals are doing? Create a separate, private collection for each of your top 3-5 competitors. Use these collections to save:

  • Their highest-performing content: What posts are getting the most comments and shares?
  • Interesting campaigns or product launches: What messaging or visuals did they use?
  • Customer comments: See what their audience is saying about them, good or bad.

This gives you an organized research hub to spot patterns and find gaps in their strategy that you can fill.

4. Curate Mood Boards for Campaigns

Before you launch a new product, run a holiday sale, or start a new content series, you need a visual identity. Use a collection as a collaborative mood board. Save posts containing colors, textures, typography, and photo styles that fit the vibe you want to create. If you're working with a team, make it a collaborative collection so everyone can contribute to the vision.

5. Collect Testimonials and Social Proof

Positive feedback is priceless. If someone leaves an amazing comment about your product or service, screenshot it and save it to your own phone. Then, share that image with just your "Close Friends" on Stories and save that Story to a "Testimonials" Collection. While it is slightly a workaround because you can't save comments directly, it keeps all your best social proof organized and ready to be deployed as a Story Highlight or in future posts.

Final Thoughts

At its core, an Instagram Collection is a tool for turning chaos into order. It lets you capture fleeting moments of inspiration or valuable data into an organized, strategic library designed to help you create better content, understand your market, and grow your brand. Taking a few seconds to save a post to the right collection is a small habit that pays off big over time.

Catching and organizing all that inspiration is the first step. The next is to turn it into a consistent content plan. A visual calendar can be a game-changer for spotting gaps in your schedule and making sure your best ideas actually get posted.
