How to Link Instagram Accounts

Juggling more than one Instagram account shouldn't feel like a full-time job of logging in and out. This guide provides you with the exact steps for linking your Instagram accounts, from adding multiple profiles for quick switching to connecting with Facebook to unlock powerful marketing tools.

Why Link Instagram Accounts in the First Place?

Connecting your accounts might seem like a small step, but it quietly unlocks a suite of features that save a lot of time and give your content a much wider reach. It’s less about a single feature and more about making your entire social media workflow smoother.

Here’s a quick overview of what you gain:

  • Seamless Switching: The most immediate benefit is the ability to hop between different Instagram profiles without having to log out and log back in every time. If you manage a personal account, a business account, and a passion project, this is a game-changer.
  • Streamlined Cross-Posting: Once you link your Instagram to your Facebook Page, you can share new posts, Stories, and Reels to both platforms simultaneously from the Instagram app. You create the content once and publish it twice, effectively doubling your exposure with a single tap.
  • Centralized Community Management: Connecting your professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page allows Meta Business Suite to pull your Instagram DMs and Facebook messages into one unified inbox. Instead of checking two different apps for messages and comments, you can manage everything from one clean dashboard.
  • Access to Business Tools: Linking your accounts activates essential business tools. You need a linked Facebook Page to set up Instagram Shopping, run targeted ad campaigns via Facebook Ads Manager, and access more detailed performance analytics that aren't available to personal accounts.
  • Brand Consistency: By managing your visual identity across platforms from one central hub (Meta's Accounts Center), it’s much easier to keep your profile picture, username, and overall branding consistent.

How to Link and Manage Multiple Instagram Accounts

If you're running more than one profile - for example, a personal brand, a business, and a side hustle - Instagram lets you add up to five accounts to the app and switch between them seamlessly. No more passwords and two-factor authentication every time you want to check another account's DMs.

Adding a Second (or Third, Fourth, or Fifth) Instagram Account

The process is incredibly straightforward. It only takes a minute to add an existing account or even create a new one directly from your settings.

  1. Go to Your Profile: Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture icon in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Open the Main Menu: Tap the three horizontal lines (the "hamburger" menu) in the top-right corner.
  3. Find the "Add Account" Option: From the menu that appears, tap on Settings and Privacy. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this screen, and you'll see a blue link that says Add account.
  4. Log in or Create: A pop-up will give you two options: Log into an existing account or Create a new account.
    • If you choose to log into an existing account, simply enter the username and password for the profile you want to add.
    • If you choose to create a new one, Instagram will guide you through the standard setup process.

That's it! Once you've logged in, the account is added to your app. Repeat the process for any other accounts you manage, up to the five-account limit.

Switching Between Your Linked Accounts in Seconds

Once you've added multiple accounts, switching between them is incredibly easy. Instagram has built-in quick shortcuts so you never have to go digging through menus.

  • The Long-Press Method: Simply press and hold your profile picture icon on the bottom navigation bar. A menu will instantly pop up showing all of your linked accounts. Just tap the one you want to switch to. This is the fastest method.
  • The Profile Drop-Down Method: From your profile page, look at the very top of your screen. You'll see your username with a small down arrow next to it. Tap on it, and a list of your linked accounts will appear. Tap to select the one you want to manage.

How to Link Your Instagram Account to a Facebook Page

Connecting your Instagram account to a Fan or Business Page on Facebook is the key to unlocking tools for marketing, e-commerce, and advanced analytics. This is done through Meta’s central hub, the Accounts Center. Before you start, there's one important prerequisite.

First: Make Sure Your Instagram is a Professional Account

To connect to a Facebook Page, your Instagram profile needs to be either a Creator or Business account. You cannot link a personal Instagram profile to a Facebook business page. If you're still using a personal account, switching over is free and takes just a few clicks.

Not sure what you have? Go to Settings and Privacy >, Account type and tools. If you see the option to "Switch to Professional Account," you're currently on a personal profile. Go ahead and make that switch first. You'll get to pick between "Creator" (best for influencers and personalities) and "Business" (best for brands, retailers, and services).

Step-by-Step Guide to Linking via Accounts Center

The Accounts Center is your command center for managing identities and connected experiences across Instagram, Facebook, and Meta Quest.

  1. Open Settings and Privacy: From your Instagram profile, tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the top-right and select Settings and Privacy.
  2. Navigate to Accounts Center: At the very top of the Settings menu, you’ll see the Accounts Center section. Tap on it to enter the hub.
  3. Add Your Facebook Account: Under "Accounts Center settings," tap on the Accounts option. You'll see your current Instagram profile listed. Now, tap the Add accounts button.
  4. Log Into Facebook: Instagram will prompt you to add your Facebook account. Tap "Continue" and follow the instructions to log into the Facebook profile that is an admin of the Facebook Page you want to link. Once you're logged in, Meta will confirm the connection.
  5. Set Up Connected Experiences: After linking, Accounts Center will ask if you want to set up connected experiences, like syncing your profile info or automatically sharing Stories. You can review and customize these settings now or come back to them later.

What This Connection Lets You Do

Once linked, a whole new world of efficiency opens up:

  • One-Click Cross-Post: When you're creating a new feed post, Reel, or Story on Instagram, you'll see a "Share to Facebook" toggle. Turn it on, select your Page, and your content goes live on both platforms at the same time.
  • Unified Inbox Power: All of your Instagram DMs and Facebook Page messages appear in the Meta Business Suite Inbox, which helps a lot with community management and customer service.
  • Advertising Capabilities: You can now run sponsored posts and ad campaigns on Instagram directly from the Facebook Ads Manager, leveraging Facebook's powerful targeting options.
  • Instagram Shopping: If you sell products, this connection is a requirement for setting up an Instagram Shop and tagging products in your posts and Stories.

Managing Your Connected Accounts for the Long Term

The Accounts Center provides a surprising amount of control over how your linked profiles interact. Checking these settings every once in a while can help you customize your workflow.

Fine-Tuning Your Cross-Platform Settings

Inside the Accounts Center, check out the section called Connected experiences.

  • Sharing Across Profiles: This is where you can control which profile can post on another. For example, you can set it to automatically share all your Instagram Stories to your Facebook story or all your Instagram posts to your Facebook feed. If you find you're toggling this on and off frequently when creating a post, you can set your default preference here.
  • Logging in with Accounts: Here, you can allow one account login to access all your others. For example, if you allow it, you could log into your Instagram profile using your Facebook login details. It's great for convenience but be mindful of security implications. If one account is compromised, the others may be at risk.

How to Safely Unlink or Remove an Account

Maybe you sold a business, changed your social media strategy, or simply want to declutter your app. Removing a linked account is as simple as adding one.

To remove an account from your app switcher:

  1. Go to Settings and Privacy >, Log Out [Username] if it's the active account, or Log Out of All Accounts.
  2. When you log in next time, Instagram will remember the different accounts, and you can tap the three dots icon next to a username to choose Remove Profile, which will permanently remove it from the quick-switch list for that device.

To unlink Instagram and Facebook in Accounts Center:

  1. Go back to Settings and Privacy >, Accounts Center.
  2. Tap on Accounts at the bottom of the list.
  3. Find the profile you wish to unlink and tap the Remove button next to it.
  4. A confirmation screen will appear, explaining what will be disconnected (e.g., cross-posting, unified login). Confirm your choice to finalize the process.

Final Thoughts

Linking is more than just a tech shortcut, it transforms fragmented social media tasks into a cohesive and efficient workflow. Taking a few minutes to connect your Instagram accounts and your Facebook Page saves you time every day and grants access to professional tools to grow your brand.

But platforms like Instagram and Facebook are only part of the story for most brands. I often found myself jumping between five different scheduling apps, with accounts disconnecting just before a big post, and DMs and comments piling up across several inboxes. That chaos led us to build Postbase. It's the simple, modern tool we wished existed, offering one visual calendar for everything, reliable account connections, and a unified inbox to help you stay on top of it all.

Spencer's spent a decade building products at companies like Buffer, UserTesting, and Bump Health. He's spent years in the weeds of social media management—scheduling posts, analyzing performance, coordinating teams. At Postbase, he's building tools to automate the busywork so you can focus on creating great content.
