How to Know if You're Shadowbanned on TikTok

One day your TikToks are hitting the For You Page, racking up views and comments. The next, it's complete silence. If your reach has suddenly nose-dived and your videos are getting nowhere near their usual numbers, you might be worried about the dreaded TikTok shadowban. This guide breaks down what being shadowbanned actually means, how you can tell if your account has been flagged, and the steps you can take to fix it and get back on the FYP.

What Is a TikTok Shadowban, Really?

First things first: "Shadowban" isn't an official term TikTok uses. You won't find it in their Community Guidelines or get a notification saying, "Your account has been shadowbanned." Instead, it's a term created by users to describe a situation where an account's visibility is restricted without any official warning. Essentially, the TikTok algorithm temporarily stops pushing your content to a wider audience, including the For You Page (FYP), search results, and hashtag feeds.

This usually happens when the algorithm flags your account for behavior that goes against its Community Guidelines, even if the violation is unintentional or minor. Think of it as being put in a digital "time-out." Your account isn't deleted or suspended, but your ability to grow and reach new audiences is severely limited until the issue is resolved.

5 Signs You Might Be Shadowbanned on TikTok

A single video underperforming isn't cause for panic - that's just the nature of algorithms. A shadowban produces a distinct pattern of decline that's hard to miss once you know what to look for. Here’s how to check your account's health.

1. Your Views and Engagement Have Suddenly Flatlined

The most obvious symptom is a dramatic and persistent drop in views. You might go from consistently getting thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of views per video to suddenly struggling to break 100 or 200. This drop isn't gradual, it feels like a switch has been flipped. New videos you post barely get any traction, even from your existing followers.

Look for a consistent pattern over your last 3-5 videos. If they are all performing far below your account's average, and nothing else about your content style has changed, it’s a major red flag.

2. You're Missing from the "For You" Page

The For You Page is the engine of a successful TikTok account, it's where most non-followers discover your content. When you're shadowbanned, your videos are no longer distributed on the FYP. You might get some views from your followers who see it on their "Following" feed or people who visit your profile directly, but you won't get any new audience growth.

Here’s how to check the data:

  • Go to a recently posted video that has underperformed.
  • Tap the three dots (...) and select Analytics or More data.
  • Look at the Traffic sources tab.

In a healthy account, the "For You" percentage should be a significant source of your views. If that metric is at 0% or a tiny number like 1-2%, the algorithm has stopped showing your video to new people. This is one of the clearest signs of a shadowban.

3. Your Content is Invisible in Search and Hashtag Feeds

Beyond the FYP, a shadowban also removes your content from search results and hashtag pages. This means even if someone is specifically looking for content like yours, they won't be able to find you. You can easily test this yourself.

Follow a few simple steps to check:

  1. Create a new video and use a completely unique, new hashtag that nobody else has used. Something like #TestForShadowban[YourUsername]2024 works well.
  2. Post the video.
  3. Immediately after posting, either log out of your account, use a friend's phone, or switch to an alternate account that does not follow you.
  4. Go to the "Discover" tab and search for that exact unique hashtag.

If your video appears under the hashtag, you're in the clear. If the page says "No results found" or your video is nowhere to be seen after a few minutes, your content is being hidden from search. That’s a very strong indicator of a shadowban.

4. New Videos Are Indefinitely "Under Review"

TikTok automatically scans every video upon upload to check for guideline violations. This process is usually instant or takes only a minute or two. However, if you notice your newly posted videos are consistently getting stuck with an "under review" message that lasts for hours or even days, it could mean your account has been flagged. The algorithm is taking extra precautions with your content because your account is on its watchlist.

While an occasional lengthy review can happen (especially for longer videos), a consistent pattern of videos getting stuck in this processing stage is not normal and often comes with a shadowban.

5. You Can't Comment, Post, or Go LIVE

This is a more direct form of restriction. If you find that your ability to comment on other people's videos has been limited or your LIVE features are suddenly unavailable without a specific notification explaining why, it may be part of a broader content suppression. TikTok is essentially limiting your activities on the platform because it has identified your account as a potential risk.

Why Would TikTok Shadowban an Account?

Okay, so you've identified the signs. But why did it happen in the first place? A shadowban is triggered by the algorithm when it detects behavior that skates the line of its Community Guidelines. Understanding the common causes can help you avoid it in the future.

  • Violating Community Guidelines: This is the most common reason. Posting content that features violence, hate speech, nudity, or other sensitive themes will get you in trouble. This also includes using copyrighted music or movie clips without permission. Even subtly suggestive content can get flagged.
  • Spam-like Behavior: The algorithm flags rapid, inauthentic activity as spam. This includes mass-following or mass-liking hundreds of accounts in a short period to try and get follow-backs. Reposting the same video multiple times quickly can also be seen as spam.
  • Using Banned or Flagged Hashtags: Some hashtags become associated with inappropriate content and are subsequently "broken" or blocked by TikTok. If you unknowingly use one of these banned tags on your video, your video's reach (and potentially your whole account's reach) can be suppressed.
  • Sudden Spikes in Questionable Engagement: If a video suddenly receives thousands of bot comments or likes from fake accounts, TikTok's system may flag it - and by extension your account - as suspicious.
  • Being Reported by Other Users: If multiple users report one of your videos or your account, it could trigger an automatic temporary restriction while TikTok reviews the reports, leading to a temporary shadowban.

My Account is Shadowbanned... Now What? A Fix-It Plan

Finding out you're shadowbanned is frustrating, but it's usually not permanent. Most shadowbans seem to last about 7 to 14 days. You can take a few steps to clean up your account and get back in the algorithm's good graces.

Step 1: Stop Posting for a Bit (2-3 Days)

This might feel counterintuitive, but the best first step is often to do nothing. Stop posting new content for at least 72 hours. This gives the algorithm time to reset and takes your account off the "hyper-scrutiny" list. Continuing to post while shadowbanned will just lead to more low-performing videos, which can send even more negative signals to the system.

Step 2: Review and Delete Problematic Content

Go through your recent videos with a critical eye. Was there a video that you thought might be a little too edgy? One with a copyrighted sound you didn't have clearance for? A video that aligns with any of the potential violations listed above? If you can identify any potential problem videos, delete them. Clean house. It's better to lose one video than to have your entire account's reach suppressed.

Step 3: Clear Your TikTok Cache

This is a simple technical step that can sometimes help with app performance glitches. It may not lift the ban on its own, but it doesn't hurt and is good practice for app health.

How to do it: Go to your Profile >, Settings and privacy >, Free up space >, Clear Cache.

Step 4: Go Back to Basics with Safe Content

After your 72-hour break, start posting again, but play it safe. Your first few videos back should be high-quality, completely original, and undeniably compliant with the Community Guidelines. Use trending (but safe) sounds directly from TikTok's library, film something engaging, and avoid any controversial topics. Your goal is to show the algorithm that you're a valuable creator providing high-quality content.

Final Thoughts

Dealing with a sudden drop in views from a TikTok shadowban can feel unsettling, but it’s often a temporary setback. By understanding how to check for suppressed reach - looking at your "For You" stats, testing hashtags, and monitoring new videos - you can quickly figure out what's going on. Once armed with that knowledge, you can take clear steps to recover by cleaning up your profile and focusing on creating great content that plays by the rules.
