How to Get a New FYP on TikTok

Feeling like your TikTok For You Page is repeating the same types of videos in an endless loop? You’re not just imagining it, and it's a common frustration for anyone who uses the app regularly. If you’re ready to see something new, this guide will walk you through exactly how to get a new FYP on TikTok, giving your feed a complete refresh and putting you back in control of the content you see.

Why Does Your TikTok FYP Get 'Stuck'?

Before you can fix your FYP, it helps to understand why it gets stale in the first place. The TikTok algorithm is one of the most powerful recommendation engines on the planet. Its single goal is to keep you watching, so it pays incredibly close attention to your behavior. Every video you watch to the end, every like, every comment, every share, and even the accounts you search for are all data points. The algorithm uses this information to build a profile of your interests and serves you more of what it thinks you like.

The problem is that it can work a little too well. If you get hooked on a certain trend or go down a rabbit hole on a specific topic - say, "cozy gaming setups" - the algorithm sees that deep engagement and doubles down. Suddenly, your entire For You Page is nothing but RGB lighting and ergonomic chairs. This is the TikTok echo chamber. While it’s designed to be helpful, it can over-specialize your feed until it becomes repetitive and boring. The good news is, you can teach it new tricks.

The Soft Reset: How to Gently Nudge Your Algorithm

You don't always need to take drastic measures to get a new FYP. Often, a few intentional changes to how you use the app are enough to gently nudge the algorithm in a new direction. Think of this as retraining your FYP one swipe at a time. The key is to move from being a passive scroller to an active curator.

1. Become an Active, Intentional Viewer

The biggest signal you send the algorithm is your passive viewing time. If you let videos you're not interested in play out, you're unintentionally telling TikTok, "More of this, please!" It's time to be more deliberate about what you watch and how you engage.

  • Use the search bar with purpose. Think of topics you’re genuinely curious about but never see on your feed. Maybe it's "bookbinding for beginners," "historical recipes," "solo travel tips," or "understanding credit scores." Search for these terms.
  • Watch new videos all the way through. When you find a video on a new topic that seems interesting, watch it from start to finish. Watch time is a massive indicator for the algorithm. Watching a video multiple times is an even stronger signal.
  • Engage with the new content. Don't just watch passively. Like the video. Leave a thoughtful comment ("This is so helpful, I never thought about it that way!"). Add it to your favorites. Share it with a friend. These actions are high-value signals that tell the algorithm you want to see more content like this.
  • Follow new creators. When you discover a creator in a new niche that you enjoy, give them a follow. This shows a more sustained interest and tells the algorithm that you want to be part of that community or conversation.

2. Be Brutal with the 'Not Interested' Button

Telling TikTok what you don't want to see is just as powerful as telling it what you do. The "Not Interested" button is a direct line of communication to the algorithm, and you should use it liberally when your feed feels stale.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. When a video pops up that represents the content you’re tired of, long-press the screen (tap and hold).
  2. A menu will appear. Tap the “Not interested” icon (it often looks like a broken heart).
  3. TikTok may also give you the option to hide videos from that specific creator or with a certain sound.

For a few days, make it your mission to use this feature on any video that bores you or falls into the category of content you want to move away from. Don't feel bad about it - you're just decluttering your digital space and making room for new things. It might take a hundred of these "not interested" taps, but soon you'll start to see new types of videos creeping in as the algorithm gets the hint.

3. Manage Your Following List

Your "Following" feed is a different experience, but who you follow still impacts what the algorithm recommends on your FYP. To help diversify the content you see, you can make two quick changes:

  1. Follow a Batch of New Creators: Find 5-10 interesting creators in a completely new niche and follow all of them at once. A single follow might not shift your whole FYP, but a cluster of new follows sends a strong signal of a new, deliberate interest.
  2. Unfollow Inactive or Irrelevant Accounts: Do a quick audit of who you're following. If you followed a bunch of meme accounts a year ago that no longer align with your interests, it's safe to unfollow them. This simple housekeeping can prevent the algorithm from thinking you're still interested in that old content.

The Hard Reset: Go Nuclear for a Totally New FYP

So you’ve tried the soft reset methods, but your FYP is still stubbornly showing you the same old stuff. If you're looking for a more dramatic change - a clean slate, so to speak - it’s time for a hard reset. These methods are more thorough but also come with tradeoffs.

Option 1: Clear Your Data (Cache and History)

Clearing your app's cache and your watch history is like erasing part of the algorithm's memory about you. It won't forget everything, but it removes a significant chunk of the data points it's using to predict what you want to see. This can give your feed a significant jolt and open it up to new content almost immediately.

Here’s how to do it:

How to Clear Your Cache:

  1. Go to your TikTok profile and tap the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner to open “Settings and privacy.”
  2. Scroll down to the “Cache & Cellular” section and tap on “Free up space.”
  3. Tap the “Clear” button next to “Cache.” This will remove temporary files without affecting your drafts or saved content.

How to Clear Your Watch History:

  1. In “Settings and privacy,” scroll to the “Content & Display” section and tap on “Activity center.”
  2. Tap on “Watch history.”
  3. Here you can tap “Select” in the top-right, choose “Select all watch history,” and then tap “Delete.”

After clearing both, restart the app. Your FYP won't be completely new, but it should feel significantly different. Now is the perfect time to start intentionally engaging with the kind of content you want to see more of, as the algorithm will be more sensitive to your new signals.

Option 2: The 'Start From Scratch' Method

This is the ultimate nuclear option and the only way to get a 100% brand new FYP - just like a new user installing the app for the very first time. Creating a new TikTok account is effective because you start with a clean slate, and the algorithm has zero preconceived notions about your interests. It gives you complete control to shape your feed from the very first swipe.

However, it comes with serious downsides:

  • Pros: A completely fresh start. An empty feed that you can curate intentionally from day one. You can escape any stubborn echo chambers your old account was trapped in.
  • Cons: You lose everything. Your username, your followers, the people you follow, all your saved videos and sounds, your DMs, and most painfully, all your drafts. This is a non-reversible decision.

Because of this, it's often more practical to create a second TikTok account instead of deleting your primary one. Many users do this anyway to separate their personal viewing from a themed account. You can easily switch between accounts within the app and use the new one when you're in the mood for discovery, giving you the best of both worlds without sacrificing your original profile.

Keeping Your New FYP from Going Stale

Once you’ve successfully refreshed your FYP, the goal is to keep it from getting stuck in another rut. The key is to turn the soft reset tactics into regular habits.

  • Stay Curious: Every week, make a habit of searching for a new term, hashtag, or creator. Keep feeding the algorithm new ideas.
  • Use "Not Interested" Regularly: Don't wait until your feed is boring to start telling TikTok what you don't like. Use the button as soon as you feel a certain type of video is becoming too common.
  • Diversify Your Engagement: Mix things up. Don't only engage with one type of content. Spend some time watching longer videos, then switch to a quick trend, then engage with an educational creator. Variety is the spice of your FYP life.

Your For You Page is a powerful tool for discovering new ideas, trends, and inspiration. Taking the time to curate it ensures it serves you, not the other way around.

Final Thoughts

Resetting your TikTok FYP is about retraining the algorithm by consciously telling it what you want to see - and what you don't. By actively engaging with new content, using the 'Not Interested' feature, and clearing your data when needed, you can break free from any content rut and take back control of your feed.
