How to Change Your FYP on TikTok

By Spencer Lanoue

If your TikTok 'For You' page is starting to feel more like a 'For Someone Else' page, you're not the only one. The algorithm is great at finding things you like until, suddenly, it isn't. This guide will show you exactly how to take back control, reset, and retrain your FYP so you can start seeing content you actually want to watch. We’ll cover everything from the quick and easy 'Refresh' button to more detailed methods for fine-tuning your feed from the ground up.

Understanding the TikTok Algorithm (In Simple Terms)

Before changing your FYP, it helps to know what’s going on behind the curtain. Think of the TikTok algorithm as a super-attentive, (mostly) smart recommendation engine. Its single goal is to keep you on the app as long as possible by showing you videos it thinks you'll enjoy. It decides what to show you based on a variety of signals you send it, both consciously and unconsciously.

These signals include:

  • Direct Engagement: The videos you like, comment on, share, and save. These are very strong indicators of your taste.
  • Watch Time: How long you spend watching a video. Watching a video all the way through - or even multiple times in a loop - is a huge green flag for the algorithm.
  • Creator and Sound Interactions: The accounts you follow and the sounds you favorite or create videos with.
  • Negative Feedback: Hitting the "Not interested" button or hiding videos from a certain creator tells the algorithm what to avoid.
  • Account Settings and Device Info: Your location, language preferences, and device type also provide general context.

Simply put, every action you take on TikTok teaches the algorithm more about you. To change your FYP, you just need to start giving it better, more accurate information.

The Quick Fix: How to Officially Reset Your FYP

For a long time, the only way to get a new FYP was to start a new account. Thankfully, TikTok now has a built-in feature that lets you hit the reset button on your 'For You' page. This is the fastest method for a clean slate without losing your followers or uploaded videos. It brings your FYP back to a more generalized state, similar to how it was when you first joined.

Step-by-Step Guide to Resetting Your 'For You' Feed

Here’s how to find and use the official refresh feature:

  1. On the TikTok app, go to your Profile tab in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap the three-line menu icon (often called a 'hamburger menu') at the top-right of your screen.
  3. Select Settings and privacy from the menu that appears.
  4. Scroll down and tap on Content preferences.
  5. Choose the option that says Refresh your For You feed.
  6. A screen will pop up explaining the action. Tap Continue, then provide a reason (optional), and hit Refresh.

And that’s it. The next time you open your 'For You' page, it will feel brand new. TikTok will start showing you a diverse range of popular content, and you can begin retraining it from scratch with your new interests.

When Is Using the 'Refresh' Feature a Good Idea?

This option is perfect if your feed feels completely off-track. For example, maybe you went down a rabbit hole watching "old faucet restoration" videos as a joke, and now your entire FYP is filled with peeling paint and rusty pipes. A full refresh wipes the slate clean quickly and effectively. However, it’s an all-or-nothing approach. It will also erase the traces of content you do like, so be prepared to start curating from the beginning.

The Ultimate Guide: Manually Retraining Your TikTok Algorithm

If a total reset feels too drastic, a manual approach gives you more control to gently steer your FYP in a new direction. This is about making conscious choices to send clear signals to the algorithm about what you want more - and less - of. It takes a little more effort upfront, but it pays off with a highly personalized feed you really enjoy.

1. Actively Engage with Content You Love

Passive watching won't change much. If you want the algorithm to learn, you need to be an active participant. When you see a video that fits the vibe you’re going for, take action.

  • Like and Comment: The like button is a powerful tool. Use it generously on any video you enjoy. Leaving a relevant comment sends an even stronger signal. You’re telling TikTok, “I enjoyed this content so much I was compelled to engage with it further.”
  • Share and Save to Favorites: Sharing a video with a friend or saving it to your Favorites collection communicates high value. If a video is good enough to save for later, the algorithm makes a strong note of its topic, style, and creator.
  • Follow the Creator: If you consistently like videos from a specific person, just follow them. This tells TikTok you approve of their niche, whether it’s minimalist home decor, financial advice for entrepreneurs, or obscure movie trivia.
  • Watch Videos to the End (and Re-Watch): This is a massive one. Video completion rate is a huge metric for TikTok. If you consistently watch certain types of videos until the very end, or even let them loop a few times, the algorithm interprets this as a sign of deep interest and will serve you more just like it.

2. Be Ruthless with Content You Dislike

Telling TikTok what you don’t want is just as important as telling it what you do. Simply scrolling past a video is a passive, weak signal. Using the "Not Interested" button is an active, undeniable command.

How to Use the 'Not Interested' Button

When a video you don’t like appears, don’t just swipe away. Instead:

  1. Long-press on the video itself (hold your finger down in the middle of the screen).
  2. A menu will pop up with several options.
  3. Tap Not interested.

This single action tells the algorithm, "Stop showing me things like this." A sub-menu might also appear, giving you the option to hide all videos from that creator or all videos using that specific sound. Use these for surgical strikes against trends or topics that have taken over your feed.

Pro Tip: Actively do this for about 10-15 minutes. Scroll through your FYP with the sole mission of hitting "Not Interested" on anything even slightly boring, annoying, or off-topic. You'll notice a difference almost immediately.

3. Curate Your Feed Through Search and Following

Don't just be an armchair critic waiting for your FYP to deliver greatness. Get in the driver’s seat. The search bar is your best tool for actively discovering new content categories and signaling your intentions to the algorithm.

  • Be Specific with Searches: Instead of waiting for small business tips to pop up, get ahead of it. Go to the discover page and actively search for hashtags like "#smallbiztips," "#marketingstrategy," or keywords like "how to grow on Instagram."
  • Engage with Search Results: Once you've searched for a topic you care about, don't just consume the results. Interact with them! Like the top videos. Follow a few of the creators in that niche. This is like feeding a training dataset directly to your personal algorithm. You’re spoon-feeding it exactly what you want.
  • Follow Relevant Hashtags: Similar to Instagram, you can "Add to Favorites" on hashtags inside TikTok. Once you search for a tag, tap on it at the top of the results page and add it to your favorites. This will help a regular stream of relevant content find its way to you.

4. Clear Your Cache (The Digital Dusting)

This final step is less about retraining the algorithm and more about general app maintenance, but it can still help refresh your experience.

Your app’s cache is where temporary data is stored to help things load faster. Over time, it can get cluttered. While clearing your cache won't reset your interests, it can solve bugs, get rid of old data, and make the app run smoother, giving it a refreshed feel.

To do it, just go to Settings and privacy >, Free up space and then tap Clear next to the Cache option. It won’t affect your drafts or posted videos.

Final Thoughts

Your TikTok For You page shouldn’t feel like a chore to scroll through. You have real control over what it shows you. Whether you choose a quick reset with the refresh button or take a more hands-on approach by actively engaging, using the "Not Interested" button, and searching for what you love, you can shape an FYP that truly inspires and entertains you.

A finely-tuned FYP is an incredible source of inspiration, but for creators and marketers, turning that inspiration into actual planned content is the most important next step.
