How to Block Comments on Instagram

Want full control over your Instagram comment section? This guide provides everything you need to know about blocking, hiding, and filtering comments to create a safer and more positive online space. We’ll cover how to turn off comments for specific posts, filter out unwanted words automatically, and block specific users from leaving comments on your content for good.

Why You Should Manage Your Instagram Comments

Before jumping into the "how," it's worth understanding the "why." Managing your comment section isn't about silencing your audience, it's about curating a healthy and productive community. Left unchecked, comment sections can devolve into spam, negativity, or outright harassment, which can harm your mental well-being and damage your brand's reputation.

By proactively managing your comments, you can:

  • Protect your mental health: Constant exposure to negativity and online trolls is draining. Creating a boundary is a powerful form of self-care.
  • Maintain brand safety: A comment section filled with spam, scams, or offensive remarks makes your brand look unprofessional and unsafe.
  • Foster a positive community: When your followers see that you moderate your space and remove negativity, they feel safer participating in the conversation. This encourages higher-quality engagement.
  • Save time and energy: Instead of manually deleting dozens of spam comments every day, you can let Instagram’s automated tools do the heavy lifting for you.

Think of your comment section as an extension of your brand or personal space. You have every right to set the rules of engagement and decide what kind of energy you want to cultivate.

Option 1: How to Turn Off Comments on a Single Post

The most straightforward way to stop comments is to disable them entirely for a specific post. This is a great solution for sensitive topics, announcements that don't require feedback, or posts that you anticipate might attract negativity. You can do this either before publishing or on a post that's already live.

Turn Off Comments on a New Post (Before Publishing)

You can proactively disable comments as you're creating a new post.

  1. Once you’ve uploaded your photo or video and written your caption, scroll to the bottom of the screen right before you hit "Share."
  2. Tap on "Advanced settings."
  3. Toggle the switch next to "Turn off commenting."
  4. Tap the back arrow to return to your post and tap "Share." Your post will go live with the comment section completely disabled. No one will be able to leave a comment.

Turn Off Comments on an Existing Post

Did a post a while ago start attracting unwanted attention? You can turn off comments at any time.

  1. Go to the post you want to moderate.
  2. Tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the post.
  3. A menu will pop up. Select "Turn off commenting."

Instantly, the comment icon and all existing comments will disappear from the post. If you change your mind later, you can follow the same steps and select "Turn on commenting" to restore them.

Option 2: Limit Comments to Specific Groups

If turning off comments feels too extreme, you can restrict who is allowed to comment in the first place. This is a fantastic middle ground that keeps the conversation going with your established community while shutting out random trolls and spammers. It's a global setting, meaning it will apply to all of your posts going forward.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  2. Tap "Settings and privacy."
  3. Scroll down to the "How others can interact with you" section and tap "Comments."
  4. Tap "Allow comments from."
  5. You’ll see several options. Choose the one that fits your goals:
    • Everyone: The default setting, allowing anyone on Instagram to comment.
    • People you follow and your followers: A good choice to allow a broad but still connected audience to engage.
    • People you follow: Restricts comments to only the accounts you choose to follow.
    • Your followers: Limits comments to only the people who follow you, which is excellent for cutting down on drive-by negativity.

By selecting "Your followers," for example, you can create a more private-feeling space where comments come from people who are already invested in your content.

Option 3: How to Block an Individual from Commenting

What if you have one or two specific people who consistently leave problematic comments? You don’t need to block their account entirely, you can just block them from commenting. They will still be able to see your posts and Reels, but anything they try to comment will not be visible to anyone but them. It's a discreet way to handle repeat offenders without further escalation.

Blocking from Your Settings

If you know their username, you can proactively add them to your blocked list.

  1. Navigate back to the "Comments" settings screen (Profile >, Hamburger Menu >, Settings and privacy >, Comments).
  2. Tap on "Block comments from."
  3. Use the search bar to find the user you want to block and tap the "Block" button next to their name.
  4. You can add as many people to this list as you need. To unblock someone, simply return to this list and tap "Unblock."

Blocking from a Comment

The easier way to do this is directly from one of their comments.

  1. Find a comment from the person you want to block.
  2. On an iPhone, swipe left on the comment. On an Android, press and hold the comment.
  3. Tap the speech bubble with an exclamation point icon that appears.
  4. Select "Block [username]." This will add them to your comment block list without blocking their account entirely.

The best part about this feature is that the blocked user isn't notified. They can still type out and post comments, but they'll be shouting into the void - only they will see what they've written.

Option 4: Automate Your Moderation with Keyword Filters

This is where social media managers can truly reclaim their time. Instead of manually playing whack-a-mole with negative or spammy comments, you can teach Instagram's algorithm to hide them for you automatically. Instagram offers both a generic offensive content filter and the ability to create your own custom lists of filtered words.

Hide Offensive Content Automatically

Instagram uses an AI-powered list of offensive words, phrases, and emojis to automatically hide problematic comments. This is a powerful first line of defense.

  1. Go to "Settings and privacy."
  2. Scroll down and tap "Hidden words."
  3. In the "Offensive words and phrases" section, you can turn on "Hide comments." It's a good idea to also turn on "Advanced comment filtering" for an even stronger net that catches more spam and scams.

Once enabled, comments containing this content will be automatically moved to a "hidden" section at the bottom of your comments. They aren't deleted, so you can review them later if needed, but they won't be visible to the public.

Create Your Own Custom Word Filter

This feature is extremely useful for brand management. You can create a comma-separated list of words, phrases, numbers, and emojis you want hidden from your comment section. This could include:

  • Specific slurs or insults that Instagram's filter might miss.
  • Your competitors' brand names.
  • Common spam phrases like "DM me," "Check my bio," "Promo."
  • Words related to political debates or topics you don't want on your page.

Here’s how to set up your lists:

  1. In the "Hidden words" menu, scroll down to "Custom words and phrases."
  2. Tap "Manage custom words and phrases."
  3. Start typing the words, phrases, or emojis you want to filter out, separated by commas. You can even include variations (e.g., promo, promotion, promotions). The list can be as long as you need it to be.
  4. Once your list is complete, make sure "Hide comments" is toggled on at the bottom of this screen.

Option 5: Limit Interactions During Spikes in Attention

Sometimes, a post can go unexpectedly viral or you might find yourself the target of a coordinated harassment campaign. In these moments, you're flooded with unwanted attention from people who don't follow you. Instagram created the "Limit Interactions" feature for exactly this situation.

When you turn it on, this feature temporarily limits comments and direct message requests from accounts that aren't following you or from users who have only followed you within the last week. It's a temporary shield to get you through the storm.

  1. In your "Settings and privacy," tap "Limited interactions."
  2. Instagram explains what the feature does. Tap "Continue."
  3. You can choose which groups to limit: "Accounts that aren't following you" and "Recent followers." It’s usually best to limit both.
  4. Set a duration for how long you want to limit interactions, from one day to four weeks. You can turn it off at any time.
  5. Tap "Turn on." A reminder will be pinned to the top of your activity feed while it's active.
